  7. DESCRIPTION:

  9. The Windows 3.0 Configuration Guide is an application developed
  10. with Asymetrix ToolBook. The Guide will ask questions about the 
  11. hardware that you want to find a good Windows configuration for.
  12. It mimics the operation of an "expert system" in several regards.
  13.  
  14. 1) Only the needed answers are asked for. This is because the data
  15. has been deduced from other answers, or more simply, that the data is 
  16. not required.
  17.  
  18. 2) There are "Why?" buttons throughout the pages of the book. 
  19. Clicking on any of these will present a brief explanation of why
  20. the question is being asked, or why the particular conclusion has
  21. been made.
  22.  
  23. 3) The "intelligence" of the Guide is restricted, or domain-specific.
  24. In this version, the recommendations made apply only to appropriate
  25. configurations of the HIMEM.SYS, SMARTDRV.SYS and RAMDRIVE.SYS drivers
  26. which are included with Windows 3.0.
  27.  
  28. 4) The Guide will attempt to handle uncertainty, or lack of information.
  29. If, for example, the type of CPU is unknown, you can have the Guide
  30. attempt to "guess" the CPU type, based on other factors. In other 
  31. instances, permission will be asked to "assume" common answers.

  34. found within the Guide itself.

  37. REQUIREMENT:
  38.  
  39. In order to run W3CFG.TBK, you require Asymetrix ToolBook, either 
  40. run-time version or the develoment version.
  41.  
  42. LOADING:
  43.  
  44. Run-time ToolBook: If ToolBook is already running, you can load this
  45. -----------------  Guide by using the File Open menu choices, locating 
  46. the W3CFG.TBK file and opening it. If you used the ToolBook Install 
  47. program, you can also load the Guide from Windows' File Manager by 
  48. double clicking on the W3CFG.TBK entry in the disk/directory where you
  49. have stored it.

  51. Development ToolBook: Access to Author level is password restricted. You
  52. --------------------- can load in Reader level using the approaches above.
  53. The required passwords for Author and File Save are mailed to you if you
  54. choose to register your copy. Additional information concerning the logic
  55. and implementation of the Guide is also provided to registered users.

  58. NAVIGATION:

  60. There are very few icons used for navigation in the Guide. Navigation is
  61. controlled by the information that you provide in response to the questions.
  62. Navigation is the standard sense of a ToolBook application is not required,
  63. nor desirable. Use the Help Icons menu choices in the Guide for more information.

  65. If you Cancel the printing routine after it has started, you must use the
  66. Page First menu choices to leave the report page. You will then be taken back
  67. to the first page of the book.

  70. REGISTRATION:

  72. This Guide is not free software. If you find the Guide useful, or keep it
  73. beyond an evaluation period of seven (7) days, you are expected to register 
  74. your copy. The registration fee is US$10.00/Cdn$12.00, which can be paid by 
  75. money order, certified cheque or VISA.

  77. Upon registration, you will receive additional, detailed documentation about 
  78. the logic and decision trees that guide the program, as well as the passwords 
  79. needed to access Author level with the full version of Asymetrix ToolBook.

  81. You can print a Registration Form from within the Guide, as well as a Feedback 
  82. Form if there are comments that you would like to make. Use the Page Register
  83. menu choices to do this.
