The distance the game world will be drawn in both the forward view and the mirror. Lowering this setting will increase performance, but can cause distant objects and sections of track to pop into the forward view and pop out of the mirror.
Sets the maximum number of opponents that will be drawn in the forward view. Lowering this setting will increase performance, but can cause cars to pop in and out of view abruptly.
Sets the maximum number of opponents that will be drawn in the mirror. Lowering this setting will increase performance, but can cause cars to pop in and out of view abruptly.
The various graphics features are turned on and off via the individual checkbox controls. Turning off some or all of these items can increase performance.
If checked, your pit crew will animate while changing tires and adding fuel.
If checked, displays the steering wheel when driving from the cockpit view.
If checked, displays the driver's arms when driving from the cockpit view. The driver arms cannot be displayed unless the steering wheel also is displayed.
The various graphics quality items are turned on and off via the individual checkbox controls. Turning off some or all of these items can increase performance.
Secondary graphic textures that produce realistic shading effects on objects.
Reflections on the cars.
Dynamic shadows cast by the cars.
Anisotropic Filtering can improve image quality by reducing the excessive blurring of textures that are viewed at sharp angles. This feature will be grayed out and disabled if your 3D hardware does not support it.
The various graphics effects are turned on and off via the individual checkbox controls. Turning off some or all of these items can increase performance.
Smoke can be generated when a car goes into a skid or suffers certain types of damage. NOTE: In Multiplayer races, the race host has the option of forcing the display of smoke for all participants, regardless of this setting.
Skid marks can be generated when one or more tires loses grip with the racing surface.
Includes debris, dirt, dust, and sparks.
These user interface options may be turned on or off via the individual checkbox controls.
If checked, help content will be displayed automatically two seconds after the mouse cursor has been placed on most menu items. Even if automatic help is turned off, you may still call up help content (if it exists) by right-clicking on a menu item.
If checked, enables you to send and receive chat messages while driving. Even if this option is unchecked, you still will see system and connection-related messages. - NOT AVAILABLE IN THE DEMO
If checked, the intro video will be played each time the game is started, and the credits sequence will be played each time you exit the game from the Main Menu. If unchecked, neither sequence will be played. Even if this box is checked, you may skip either sequence at any point while it is playing by pressing the Escape key. - NOT AVAILABLE IN THE DEMO
If checked, a track preview video will be played before you are taken to the track. The video may be skipped at any point by pressing any key.
If Time is selected, all lap information will be displayed in time. If Speed is selected, all lap information will be displayed in MPH.

The relative volume of all engines except yours.
The relative volume level of your spotter and crew chief. Not adjustable if spotter/crew chief voice communication has been disabled.
The relative volume of all track surface sounds such as tire scrubbing, skidding, and road noise. Scrubbing and skidding provide vital audio feedback, so think twice before reducing this volume level!
The relative volume of all crash sounds.
The relative volume of miscellaneous sounds such as crowd noise, pit work, etc.
Enables/disables all audio in the game. If you are running a dedicated server, you may want to uncheck this box in order to improve performance. Otherwise, it is STRONGLY recommended that this option be left on, since sound is an essential part of the gaming experience.
If checked, turns on 3D sound. 3D sound provides superior audio feedback with regard to the positions of nearby opponents, and therefore is highly recommended.
The maximum number of sounds that can be played at any given time. Reducing this value can improve performance.
If checked, turns on sound reflections, which are generated by cars, walls, fences, and other trackside objects.
16-bit sound samples sound better than their 8-bit counterparts, but can cause a decrease in overall performance.
The method(s) of communication between you and your spotter and crew chief.
The frequency with which you will hear from your spotter and crew chief. The High setting is intended for novice players, while more experienced users may find Medium or Low more suitable.
If checked, the crew chief will call out your lap time or speed after you cross the start/finish line.

In Sequential mode, the Shift Up and Shift Down commands are used to change gears in the following sequence: reverse, neutral, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
In Direct Selection mode, you may shift directly to any gear, or to neutral.
The H Pattern mode is intended for use only with controllers featuring a gated shifter. In this mode, you may shift directly to any of the forward gears as well as to reverse gear. Once the shifter is moved out of an assigned gate, the transmission will shift to neutral automatically.
To re-assign a control, click to the right of its name.
The DirectInput driver is the most compatible and is recommended for most users. The Generic driver may give better performance, but is not compatible with USB or digital input devices. After you switch drivers, you will need to re-calibrate, and you may need to re-assign some controls.
If checked, enables force feedback. Force feedback is available only for supported control devices and requires the DirectInput driver.
Sets the maximum strength of the force feedback. Moving the slider to the right makes the steering heavier.
This number can reduce unwanted oscillations of the wheel that arise due to latency, although too large a number can introduce jerkiness into the force output.
There is a delay between the time the simulation calculates the forces you should be feeling and the time the device actually makes you feel them. This number attempts to compensate for that delay by predicting what the forces will be this many milliseconds in the future. Finding the right number is largely a matter of feel. The steering can be made to feel more immediate, but too large a number can introduce jerkiness into the force output.
Calibrates your game controller.
Sets the steering linearity. If you are using a steering wheel, moving the slider toward Linear may give you more precise control. If you are using a joystick or keyboard to steer, you will probably get better results by moving the slider toward Non-Linear.
The various driving aids are intended for novice players as well as for those players without analog controls.
If checked, equips your car with an anti-lock braking system. While anti-lock brakes make the car easier for the novice driver to control, the experienced driver will be able to brake more efficiently with this option turned off. NOTE: If braking has been assigned to a button or a key rather than a controller axis, this aid will be turned on and cannot be turned off. Otherwise, the car would be very difficult to control while braking.
If checked, equips your car with an automatic transmission. The automatic transmission shifts more slowly than its manual counterpart, resulting in slower lap times for the experienced driver.
If checked, equips your car with an automatic clutch. While the manual clutch can provide greater shifting precision, it requires proper heel and toe downshift technique and therefore is recommended only for experienced users. The manual clutch is not available if Automatic Shifting has been selected.
If checked, equips your car with automatic steering assistance. With the steering assistance turned on, it is more difficult to spin the car. This aid is particularly useful for novice drivers and for those who are steering with buttons or the keyboard, but disabling it will provide greater steering precision. NOTE: If the steering has been assigned to buttons or keys rather than a controller axis, this aid will be turned on and cannot be turned off. Otherwise, the car would be very difficult to control.
If checked, equips your car with a traction control system. While traction control makes the car easier for the novice driver to control, the experienced driver will be able to accelerate and corner more efficiently with this option turned off. NOTE: If the throttle has been assigned to a button or a key rather than a controller axis, this aid will be turned on and cannot be turned off. Otherwise, the car would be very difficult to control while accelerating.
If checked, the ideal racing line around the track will be highlighted. The aid may be turned on or off while in the car by pressing the R key.

Strategy:
Ratings are based on a 1-100 scale, with 50 being average. Prior to each race, a driver's rating in a given category is randomly generated between its MIN and MAX values specified below. Use the arrow controls to edit a rating. Altering these ratings can produce dramatic changes in behavior and therefore is recommended only for advanced users.
Patience level when attempting a pass or blocking. High aggression may increase the chance of driver error.
Ability to run consistent laps. Note that it is possible to be consistently SLOW. Consistency also affects the chance of driver error.
The ability to finish a race well. Drivers with a high Finishing rating will get stronger as the race nears its end.
Overall performance in Qualifying sessions only.
Overall performance on road courses.
Overall performance on tracks under one mile in length.
Overall performance on ovals one mile or longer which do not mandate the use of a restrictor plate.
Overall performance on ovals at which a restrictor plate is mandated.
The ability of the car to slip through the air with a minimum of drag. A higher Aero rating means less drag, which translates to more speed.
Grip level.
Engine horsepower.
Chance for a mechanical failure. Higher reliability translates to a lower chance of such an occurrence.
The more consistent the pit crew is, the less likely a mistake will be made during a pit stop.
A high rating translates to quicker times for all pit operations: changing tires, adding fuel, making setup adjustments, and repairing damage.
A measurement of the team's willingness to take pitting risks in order to gain track position. This can be done in several ways, the most obvious of which involves taking none or two tires rather than four. As this value increases, the team becomes more willing to take such chances. Because of this fact, a high Strategy rating isn't necessarily better than a low one.

The name of the setup file that will be used during the Race session. If set to NONE, the Current setup will be used.
The setup that is currently loaded onto the car. If you have made any unsaved changes to this setup, an asterisk will appear in front of the filename.
A lower ratio makes the steering more sensitive. Higher ratios are better on high speed ovals, lower ratios allow the tighter turning required on road courses.
The car's current fuel level.
The desired amount of fuel. The car's fuel level is fully adjustable only in Testing mode. In all other game modes, fuel may be added to the tank, but not removed.
Each tire's temperature is taken in three places: inner edge (I), middle (M), and outer edge (O). Note that the location of the INNER and OUTER edges depends upon the side of the car being examined. Cold pressure is measured when the tire is mounted. Hot, or operating pressure is measured at each pit stop.

Upon confirmation, cancels changes made to the Current setup and takes you back to the Race Weekend screen.
Saves changes made to the Current setup and takes you back to the Race Weekend screen. Changes are saved to a temporary file (denoted with an asterisk preceding the filename) so that the source file remains intact. If the source file happens to be a temporary file, it will be overwritten. Only one temporary file may exist per track.
Contains the following setup elements: Tire pressure, shock compression and rebound, springs, camber, caster, ride height, front brake bias, front toe-out, sway bars, and track bar.
Contains the following setup elements: Front bias, left side bias, and wedge.
Contains the following setup elements: Grille tape, spoiler, differential and transmission ratios.
Displays an overhead view of the car along with its weight at each of the four corners.
Shifting weight to the front (a higher front bias) can help the car turn in better, but may give more mid-corner push. Shifting weight back can stabilize the car at turn entry, but may loosen it mid-corner.
On an oval, use the maximum left weight allowed. On road courses, it's usually best to keep the weight equal on the left and right sides.
Less wedge will loosen the car, allowing it to turn better. More wedge tightens the car, and can help in putting the power down. On a road course, use 50% wedge to keep the car from pulling to the left or right under power.
The qualifying engine gives more power, but will tend to overheat if used for more than a few laps. The race engine is designed to go the full race distance. You are automatically given the qualifying engine in a qualifying session, and the race engine in a warmup or race session. In practice or testing you are free to try either.
The differential gear ratio is used to adjust all four gears together. A smaller ratio allows for higher top speeds, but produces less torque at the rear wheels, so it will take longer to reach top speed.
The transmission gear ratios allow each gear to be individually adjusted. A smaller ratio allows for higher top speeds, but produces less torque at the rear wheels, so it will take longer to reach top speed.
This is the number of engine revolutions for each revolution of the rear wheels in the given gear. This allows a meaningful comparison of gear ratios when changing both the diff ratio and transmission ratios.
More tape reduces air drag and increases front downforce, but can cause engine overheating. Don't forget about this on a hot day.
Less spoiler reduces air drag and rear downforce, giving higher top speeds and a looser car. A setting of 70 degrees is mandated at the superspeedways.
Lower tire pressures result in a more forgiving car, and higher tire temperatures. Higher pressures allow higher top speeds with less temperature buildup. The recommended pressure will keep the middle (M) temperature on the tires near the average of the inside (I) and outside (O) temperatures. Going higher than recommended can result in more speed at a high-speed track, but the loss in grip can hurt at slower tracks.
At the front, a lower number (softer shock compression) loosens the car during the transition to braking, and at the rear, softer shock compression tightens the car during the transition to throttle. Higher numbers (stiffer shock compression) give quicker reactions during these transitions, and the opposite effects.
At the front, a lower number (softer shock rebound) loosens the car during the transition to throttle, and at the rear, softer shock rebound tightens the car during the transition to braking. Higher numbers (stiffer shock rebound) give quicker reactions during these transitions, and the opposite effects.
Softer front springs usually loosen the car (turns better), while softer rear springs tighten it (less likely to spin). Use the softest springs you can without letting the car scrape the ground. If the car rolls too much, stiffen the sway bars.
Some positive left side and negative right side camber will help the car turn left. Too much camber, though, will reduce grip and increase tire wear. Tire temperatures on the edge of the tire leaning into the turn (outside (O) on left, inside (I) on right) should be 5 to 10 degrees hotter than the other edge. Negative, equal cambers on both sides are usually best on a road course, with inside temperatures 5 to 10 degrees hotter than outside.
More caster helps the car turn in, with more controllable power slides at exit. More caster is usually used at slower tracks, less caster on high speed ovals. With force feedback, more caster gives heavier steering.
Raising the track bar loosens the car. Increasing the split (running higher right side than left side) loosens the car under power and in high-banked corners, and tightens it under braking.
Lower ride heights give better handling, but can allow the car to bottom, requiring stiffer springs. On ovals, run the right side a little higher, since the car leans in the corners. Increasing the chassis rake (running higher rear ride heights than front) gives more downforce and drag.
If the car doesn't turn well under braking, decrease the front brake bias. If it wants to spin under braking, increase the front bias. Go with the lowest front bias you can control.
Increasing front toe-out settles the car in a turn, but too much can produce understeer. 1/8 inch toe-out is a very common setting.
Stiffening the front sway bar (larger diameter) tightens the car and reduces body roll when cornering, which can give better control over the tire camber during cornering. Too stiff a bar can lift a front wheel off the ground when cornering.
Stiffening the rear sway bar (larger diameter) loosens the car and reduces body roll when cornering.

Find network addresses a different way
Un-checking this box will cause the game to bypass standard modems when it is determining available connection devices. Un-check this box if you are experiencing driver problems with your modem. NOTE: Cable modems are not affected by this setting.
Checking this box will allow you to play a multiplayer game between two computers connected with a null-modem cable. WARNING: If you have a graphics tablet connected to a serial port on your computer, do not check this box. There is a known bug in the device driver for some graphics tablets that causes the driver to become corrupt when this box is checked, requiring you to reinstall the driver for the tablet.
Checking this box will cause the program to look for your local network and Internet addresses in a different way. You should only check this box if the Connect Via list or the Accept Connections Via list does not contain some of your local network or Internet addresses. Note that if this box is checked, and your only network connection is to the Internet using a standard dialup modem (not a cable modem or DSL), and you start the game while you are not dialed in, Windows may try to connect you to the Internet.
Changes will not take effect until the game is restarted.

If you can log in to sierra.com, but ALL of the races in the table have a dash in the PING column, then you have most likely selected the wrong address. Just come back here and select a different address from the list. If none of the addresses in the list work, close the sierra.com login dialog box, hit the CONFIGURE button at the bottom of the screen, check the 'Find network addresses a different way' box, hit OK, restart the game, and try this procedure again. Once you've found the right one, you shouldn't need to do this again since we remember which one you selected.

The number of players currently connected to this race, followed by the maximum number allowed.
The ratings restrictions (if any) the host has placed upon the server. Note that you are allowed to join a server that is in Setup mode if any of your ratings are allowed by the server. You will, however, be disconnected by the server if it starts a race at a track where your rating is excluded. There are four possible displays: A dash indicates no ratings restrictions. You are free to join, but the race results won't count toward your ratings in any way. An X means that all of your ratings fall outside the ranges allowed by the server. You may not join this server. A plus sign indicates that the server has some type of ratings restrictions set, but not for the current track type. A numerical display such as 3-7 indicates the ratings range the host has set for the current track type. The other track types may also be restricted.
The race length in laps.

Computer opponents setting. If the host has enabled computer opponents for this race, a plus sign will appear in this column.
The maximum latency (in milliseconds) allowed to join this race. Joining a race with a low maximum latency can require a high-quality connection, but usually results in better gameplay.
The ping value to the server. A lower ping usually results in better gameplay.
The current session and the amount of time or laps remaining. If the host is in the process of setting the various race options, Setup will be displayed.
If the race you wish to join requires a password, type it here.
Your sierra.com driver ratings. You have different ratings for each of the following track types: road course (RC), short track (ST), speedway (SW), and superspeedway (SS). To the far right is your LPI (Laps Per Incident) statistic. Your LPI represents the average number of laps you have historically completed before becoming involved in an accident of some type. You'll want to keep this number as high as possible. Only races with ratings restrictions count toward your ratings and LPI.

Shows the ratings restrictions (if any) and the server location (if specified by the host) for the selected race.

Keeping your eyes high has several benefits: Since you're looking farther into the distance, you'll notice sooner if the car starts to over rotate, giving you a better chance of catching a spin before it goes too far.
By looking farther down the track, you're forcing yourself to think further into the future...
Notice how the banking decreases here. In effect, the track is falling away from you. Since you'll have less grip here, so you might need to modulate the throttle to keep from getting oversteer.
