  4. This is the ReadMe file for the Sound Blaster AWE Control Panel
  5. (for Windows 95). This ReadMe file contains the following sections:

  16. 1.  Introduction
  17.     ============
  18.  
  19.     This is the release of the AWE Control Panel (version 2.05)
  20.     for Windows 95. 
  21.  
  22.     This version of the AWE Control Panel includes the following
  23.     new features:
  24.  
  25.         * Support for SoundFont 2.0 sound-font bank format
  26.         * Support for MPU-401 emulation (to enable/disable)

  29. 2.  Hardware and Software Requirements
  30.     ==================================
  31.  
  32.     To make use of this software package, you will require the
  33.     following:
  34.  
  35.     Hardware - A Sound Blaster 32 or Sound Blaster AWE32 audio card
  36.                in your PC system. Your audio card must already be
  37.                configured and fully functional in Windows 95.
  38.  
  39.     Software - Microsoft Windows 95 on your PC
  40.              - The Audio software included with your audio card.
  41.          - The latest Windows 95 audio drivers for the Sound Blaster
  42.            32 or Sound Blaster AWE32 - SBAWE32.DRV and SBAWE.VXD
  43.            (versions 4.25 and above)

  45.    *** IMPORTANT ***
  46.  
  47.     * Ensure that you have already installed the Audio software
  48.       included with your audio card - including the (older version
  49.       of the) AWE Control Panel for Windows 95.
  50.  
  51.       If you have not previously installed the Audio software for
  52.       your audio card, please do so now.
  53.  
  54.     * If you do NOT have the latest Windows 95 audio drivers, please
  55.       download the latest Sound Blaster audio drivers update pack for
  56.       Windows 95 from the Creative Labs FTP site or World Wide Web site.

  59. 3.  Contents of the Software Package
  60.     ================================

  62.     This software package contains the following files:
  63.  
  64.     AWECP32.EXE     AWE Control Panel application for Windows 95.
  65.     AWE32RES.DLL    AWE Control Panel resources dll.
  66.     AWECP.HLP       AWE Control Panel help file.
  67.     AWECP.CNT       Contents page for the AWE Control Panel help file.
  68.     README.TXT      This file.

  71. 4.  Installing the AWE Control Panel
  72.     ================================
  73.  
  74.     To install the AWE Control Panel, just follow these steps:
  75.  
  76.     A. Ensure that you have already installed the Audio software
  77.        included with your audio card - including the (older version
  78.        of the) AWE Control Panel for Windows 95.
  79.  
  80.        If you have not previously installed the Audio software for
  81.        your audio card, please do so now.
  82.        
  83.     B. Make a back-up of your existing AWE Control Panel files. You
  84.        can do this by using the DOS Copy command. For example - at the
  85.        DOS prompt, type:
  86.  
  87.        COPY AWECP32.EXE AWECP32.BAK
  88.  
  89.        This will create a back-up copy of your existing AWECP32.EXE
  90.        file and rename it as AWECP32.BAK
  91.  
  92.        You should make a back-up of all the files that you will be
  93.        updating (namely AWECP32.EXE, AWE32RES.DLL, AWECP.HLP, AWECP.CNT).
  94.        You will find these 4 files in the target directory that you
  95.        installed your Audio software to, under the subdirectories
  96.        \PROGRAM (for AWECP32.EXE & AWE32RES.DLL) and \HELP (for AWECP.HLP
  97.        and AWECP.CNT).
  98.  
  99.        For example, if you installed your Audio software to the (default)
  100.        directory \PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTSND, you need to go to
  101.        \PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTSND\PROGRAM to find AWE32CP.EXE and
  102.        AWE32RES.DLL). Similarly for the 2 Help files, look in the
  103.        \PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTSND\HELP subdirectory.

  105.     C. Copy the new AWE Control Panel files to the following
  106.        subdirectories (assuming that your original Audio software
  107.        was installed to the default \PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTSND
  108.        directory)
  109.  
  110.        * Copy AWECP32.EXE and AWE32RES.DLL to
  111.  
  112.        \PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTSND\PROGRAM  
  113.  
  114.        * Copy AWECP.HLP and AWECP.CNT to
  115.  
  116.        \PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTSND\HELP 
  117.  
  118.        As you have already made a back-up of your older version of these
  119.        files, you can simply overwrite them with the newer versions
  120.        included in this software package.

  122.     D. To launch the AWE Control Panel, simply run AWECP32.EXE
  123.  
  124.        Having previously installed the Audio software package on your
  125.        system, a shortcut to the AWE Control Panel should already have
  126.        been created by the Audio software installation program. You
  127.        can find this shortcut in the Program Group folder containing
  128.        your Audio software icons (look for the icon representing the
  129.        AWE Control Panel - it should be described as 'AWE Control Panel')
  130.  
  131.        Alternately, you can create a shortcut to the AWECP32.EXE file
  132.        from your Windows 95 desktop. Please refer to your Windows 95
  133.        documentation on how to create shortcuts.

  139. (i)  What is SoundFont 2.0?
  140.  
  141.      SoundFont 2.0 is a new digital audio file format for wavetable
  142.      synthesizer sounds.  It is a public standard that is portable,
  143.      extensible, and carefully designed to support arbitrarily complex
  144.      modulation and synthesis networks.
