- What is Shareware
- -----------------
-
- Shareware is copyrighted software which is distributed by authors through bulletin
- boards, on-line services, disk vendors, and copies passed among friends. It is
- commercial software which you are allowed to try before you pay for it. This
- makes shareware the ultimate in money back guarantees.
-
- With shareware you get to try it for a reasonable limited time (like 30 days),
- without spending a penny. You are able to use the software on your own
- system(s), in your own special work environment, with no sales people looking
- over your shoulder. If you decide not to continue using it, you throw it away and
- forget all about it. No paperwork, phone calls, or correspondence to waste your
- valuable time. If you do continue using it, then - and only then - do you pay for it.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, NOT a type of software. Shareware is
- produced by accomplished programmers, just like retail software. There is good
- and bad shareware, just as there is good and bad retail software. The primary
- difference between shareware and retail software is that with shareware you
- know if it's good or bad before you pay for it.
-
- This CD-ROM does not contain any retail or commercial versions of the products
- listed. Unless the program is in the Public Domain (Freeware), you will need to
- register and pay for the program to continue using beyond the trial period
- specified.
-
- Registration and payment for shareware programs also allows you to receive the
- full and latest version of the program.
-
- The shareware system and the continued availability of quality shareware
- products depend on your willingness to register and pay for the shareware you
- use. It's the registration fees you pay which allow us to support and continue to
- develop our products. Please show your support for shareware by registering
- those programs you actually use and by passing the shareware programs on to
- others. Shareware is kept alive by your support!
-
-
- Front-End Trouble-Shooting
- --------------------------
-
- 1) The front-end window does not look right or is bigger than the screen.
-
- You may have your system setup with Large Fonts. To check if you do, follow
- these steps:
-
- Right-mouse click on the desktop and select Properties. Then select Settings
- and check the Font Size box. If it says Large Fonts then you are using Large
- Fonts. To change to Small Fonts, select Small Fonts in the Font Size box and
- select OK.
-
-
- 2) I installed a program onto my hard drive. How do I know which directory the
- program was installed under ?
-
- Before installing the program, check the directory path in the Installing window.
-
-
- 3) How do I delete a program once it has been installed onto my hard drive?
-
- If you installed the program via the Install button, you should be able
- to use the Uninstall button to remove the program. If the Uninstall
- button is not enabled (is grayed), you will have to use Windows Explorer to
- delete the directory where you installed the program.
-
-
- 4) I get a "Visual Applications Running" message (or something similar). Or I get
- a message saying that I need to quit the front-end program.
-
- Some programs or install programs are written with earlier versions of Visual
- Basic and will not run correctly while the front-end interface program is running.
- To run or install the program, write down the directory where the program is
- stored in the CD-ROM (the directory in the Dir on CD box in the Main screen),
- then exit the front-end program. Use Windows Explorer and switch to the CD-
- ROM drive (usually D:). Click on either the setup program (setup.exe or
- install.exe) or program file (a file with the extension .exe and usually named after
- the game (e.g. cool95.exe for Cool Edit)).
-
- If you still get the error message, restart Windows and try again.
-
-
- 6) Information about your system.
-
- If you contact Softforum's Technical Support, you may be asked some questions
- about your system setup. You can find some information about your system in
- the System Info area in the About Box (click the Softforum logo in the main
- screen).
-
-
- Programs Trouble-Shooting
- -------------------------
-
- 1) When trying to run a program, I get an "out of memory" error message.
-
- A) Close/quit any programs running in the background. Close any windows you
- don't need (e.g. Windows Explorer). If you still have memory errors, restart
- Windows. If that still doesn't work, check the manual/help file for the program
- and check the memory requirements for the program.
-
- B) Ensure that your device drivers are loaded into upper memory. Consult your
- DOS manuals on how to do this.
-
-
- 2) I can't seem to exit the program.
-
- Try hitting any of the following keys: the esc key, ctrl+c, ctrl+q, break,
- ctrl+break, alt+x, alt-f4.
-
-
- 3) The program will not work or install. What do I do?
-
- Unfortunately, because of the nature of Shareware, Softforum can only offer
- technical support for the interface program, and not for individual programs. If
- you are experiencing problems with a specific program, look for help in the
- documentation for the program. Look for readme files and manuals in the
- directory where the program is stored in the CD-ROM (the directory indicated in
- the Dir on CD-ROM field in the main screen). Most readme/manual files have
- the extensions .WRI, .DOC or .TXT. You can also check the on-line help for the
- program, or look for files with the extension .HLP in the game directory.
-
-
- 4) I get error messages when I try running the program from the CD.
-
- Most of the error messages you see are related to write errors. CD-ROMs are
- read-only, which means you can not write to them, just read from them. If a
- program tries to write to the CD, it will fail, resulting in the error messages you
- see. The solution is to install the program to a read and write device such as a
- Hard Drive, and then running the program from the Hard Drive.

- Video for Windows and VBRUNxxx.DLL
- ----------------------------------
-
- Video for Windows
-
- Video for Windows (VFW) is a format for playing videos under Windows. These
- video files typically have the extension AVI. Some programs make use of VFW
- to play video and animation. If a program requires VFW, and you don't have
- VFW installed, then follow these steps to install VFW:
-
- 1) You need to get the Windows 95 CD-ROM or Floppies.
- 2) Click on Start, then on Settings and select Control Panel.
- 3) Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- 4) Click on the Windows Setup tab.
- 5) Select Multimedia in the Components list.
- 6) Click the Details button.
- 7) If it is not checked, check Video Compression.
- 8) Click OK and click OK again.
- Windows 95 will now install the drivers needed to play .AVIs.
-
- Follow the instructions to install VFW.
-
-
- VBRUNxxx.DLL
-
- Certain programs were written using a programming language called Visual
- Basic. All Visual Basic programs require a run-time library in the form of a
- Dynamic Linked Library (DLL).
-
- Some programs may not come with the run-time libraries in order to save space.
- We have made the DLLs available in the directory \vbrun in the CD-ROM.
- Check the documentation for the program to see which version of the Visual
- Basic run-time DLL you require. The versions in the \vbrun directory are:
-
- vbrun100.dll - Visual Basic 1.0 run-time DLL
- vbrun200.dll - Visual Basic 2.0 run-time DLL
- vbrun300.dll - Visual Basic 3.0 run-time DLL
- vb40016.dll - Visual Basic 4.0 16bit run-time DLL (Windows 3.1)
- vb40032.dll - Visual Basic 4.0 32bit run-time DLL (Windows 95)
-
- Just copy the DLL that is required to either the directory where you installed the
- program, or the windows system directory (e.g. c:\windows\system).
