  3. A new release (3981) of the Calliope music notation editor for m68k  
  4. and i386 architectures running NeXTStep is available free of charge  
  5. from

  9. Calliope is a full-featured music notation editor having fast  
  10. graphic input and editing, automatic formatting, justification and  
  11. pagination, professional quality output, and General-MIDI input and  
  12. playback.  It has been used for several major music publishing  
  13. projects, and has special provision for early music.  Details are  
  14. available from ‹http://www.CL.cam.ac.uk/users/wfc/calliope.html which  
  15. also shows short music examples (at screen resolution).

  17. You must install the Sonata font (an Adobe font available for  
  18. NeXTStep from various vendors) and the Calliope font (available from  
  19. the distribution directory) for the program to work and for the  
  20. manual to be understandable.

  22. There is no on-line help, but there is a slightly out of date  
  23. 80-page tutorial manual on the distribution directory as well as  
  24. some example music documents to illustrate techniques of use.

  26. Release 3981 improves the previous release (3970) in the following ways:
  27.  
  28. 1.  Corrected the finding of the hyphen-margin when small clefs are  
  29. used at the beginning of a staff.
  30.  
  31. 2.  Fixed a bug in pasting images.
  32.  
  33. 3.  Fixed a bar line bug introduced in Release 3918.
  34.  
  35. 4.  Running headers and footers now display at 'true' font size  
  36. regardless of document's rastral size.  NOTICE: this may require  
  37. changes to previous documents.

  39. 5.  Colours are implemented.  See the Color aspect of the  
  40. Info->Preferences... panel.  Use the Tools->Colors... panel in the  
  41. usual NeXTStep manner.

  43. 6.  Double-clicking an object or marker raises the inspector.
  44.  
  45. 7.  Improved graphic behaviour of runner variables.
  46.  
  47. 8.  Command-r applied to a versed object cycles the hypen or  
  48. extender through two additional possibilities used in repeat bars.
  49.  
  50. 9.  Fixed a bug causing crashes when non-staff objects were  
  51. selected when the Parts Inspector was open.
  52.  
  53. 10.  The rule concerning appearance of bar numbers at ends of  
  54. staves has been corrected.
  55.  
  56. 11.  New features for overriding "5's"-type bar numbers on an  
  57. individual basis (see Barline Inspector).

  62. 1.  Parts extraction "sort of works" in well-behaved situations.   
  63. In the system inspector, select one or more staves and press the  
  64. EXTRACT button.  A new document will be created containing the  
  65. selected staves.  In the Parts inspector, select one or more parts  
  66. and press the Extract button.  A new document will be created  
  67. containing the staves on which the selected parts appear.  There are  
  68. numerous situations where extractions are incorrect.  Please don't  
  69. tell me about bugs you find in this until I release extraction  
  70. officially.

  72. 2.  G-MIDI support on Intel.  I am hoping very soon to be able to  
  73. recommend a configuration of sound card and driver for NeXTStep  
  74. sound and MIDI output which should provide a worry-free system for  
  75. those who do not wish to use the more elaborate configurations  
  76. recommended by CCRMA.
