  1. HelpViewer.app - an application for viewing, scanning, printing,
  2. compressing, expanding, verifying, compacting, and comparing the
  3. NEXTSTEP on-line help of other applications
  4.

  8. Version 1.3 is a maintenance release, with some improvements
  9. and bug fixes for HelpViewer's integrated Help Compander tool.
  10.  
  11. Version 1.3 might be the last release under NEXTSTEP 3.3 - the
  12. next major release is planned to be HelpViewer II for OPENSTEP.

  17. * transparency removal
  18.   This new help folder verification option removes the transparency
  19.   information (i.e. the alpha channel) from all TIFF files, and thus
  20.   further decreases the required disk space for your help folder
  21.   (and that for the resulting Help.store file as well).

  23. * help folder verification speedup
  24.   The image packing and LZW-compressiong options now work much faster,
  25.   especially on 'empty runs' i.e. when all images have already been
  26.   packed/compressed by a previous run.

  28. * STOP signs with progress pies
  29.   Some of the 'Verify Contents' and 'Compare Help Folders' options
  30.   can take quite a while when run on huge help folders, eventually
  31.   generating no visual output for minutes. To keep you informed about
  32.   what's going on, the STOP signs now sport progress pies whereever
  33.   possible. (That is, for all stages where the amount of work to do
  34.   can be pre-calculated.)

  36. * auxiliary comparison help folder
  37.   When reviewing the differences between two help folders, you can
  38.   now select an auxiliary third help folder. Help files from this
  39.   third folder will be opened in Edit as well, along with the two
  40.   help files originally compared. Handy when you want to reflect
  41.   changes in another language.

  43. * extraction of modified help files
  44.   When reviewing the differences between two help folders, you can
  45.   now copy the help files listed for either of the two folders to
  46.   another location, preserving the given subfolder hierarchy.
  47.   Handy when you want to send just the modified/new help files
  48.   to someone else, perhaps for translation to another language.

  55. With HelpViewer, you can view any application's on-line help,
  56. and print all help pages, or just selected chapters or pages,
  57. with help links replaced by page numbers.
  58. Auto-scanning of all hidden help files. Auto-chaptering.
  59. Customizable Table of Contents, headers, and footers.

  61. Developers can scan their own application's on-line help to
  62. locate and correct help links to nonexistent help files,
  63. help links to nonexistent markers within existing help files,
  64. and duplicate marker definitions in help files.

  66. With HelpViewer's integrated Help Compander tool (introduced in
  67. version 1.2) you can compress and expand NEXTSTEP on-line help.

  69. Users can expand an application's compressed on-line help into
  70. a help folder in original "source code" form, perform certain
  71. automatic repair actions or manual modifications, and compress
  72. the help folder back into the application's on-line help.

  74. Developers can bypass the ProjectBuilder application completely,
  75. and let the Help Compander perform all required steps to generate
  76. the Help.store file, including a final verification run to detect
  77. infamous "compresshelp" bug.
