Using NeXT computer for the daily work, you often come across information/data which you want to save for later use. In such a case, use DataBag instead of the ordinal NeXTSTEP SavePanel.
DataBag is a Personal Data Archiver application, which has the following aspects:
DataBag manages your valuable data for you. With DataBag, you can collect data in one place. Collecting them in one place generates many merits.
What you have to do is only one thing. Transfer data to DataBag using NeXTSTEP data input operation like Cut&Paste, file dragging, or Services Menu etc.. And DataBag takes care of the somewhat tedious settlement which is commonly associated with data management. For example, you need not to worry about the file name for data, nor about the key definition for later data search.
With DataBag, you can save all the data types which NeXTSTEP officially offers. Saving Emacs buffer/region content is also possible.
For data search, DataBag uses Librarian. The filter service program, with which Librarian can recognize DataBag data-format, is included. Because Librarian has powerful indexing function, it enables incredible fast search even if the data storage becomes large quantities.
You can launch data resided on the DataBag window by double clicking. This feature reduces the necessity of WorkSpace.
Caution
DataBag needs NeXTSTEP 3.0 or more. NeXTSTEP 2.* is unsuitable.
DataBag demo version can save maximum 50 data.
Installation
You need not to become root.
Launch Installer.app by double clicking DataBag.pkg. Select the folder where you are going to install DataBag, and click OK button. For the time being, we recommend that you install DataBag in ~/Apps.
When installation starts, Installer.app asks you "Special procedure is included which should be executed while installation. Really execute?". This procedure installs the filter service which Librarian.app uses. So, you must execute it.
When installation finishes, please do logout, then login. This is a must.
Info/Help menu is a on-line manual. You can print out it by Print menu.
When you have launched DataBag, you must read the beginning of Quick Start chapter of the on-line manual because it describes the way how to setup Librarian.app. Unless you setup, Librarian does not work with DataBag data.
New Version Re-Installation
The installation procedure is the same as Installation above. One difference is that Installer.app asks you "There already exists DataBag. Do you want to overwrite it?". Please click OK button.
When installation finishes, please do logout, then login. This is a must.
When Other User Want to Use DataBag
Suppose the user-name, who want to use DataBag, is newUser, while the user-name, who is already the DataBag user, is DBUser.
You can place DataBag.app under ~newUser/Apps or /LocalApps. But if pressed I would say that the latter (/LocalApps) would be better because one DataBag.app is sufficient for every users.
If you are going to move ~DBUser/Apps/DataBag.app to /LocalApps, move it from WorkSpace.
Next, copy ~DBUser/Library/Services/DataBag.service to ~newUser/Library/Services folder. If no ~newUser/Library/Services folder exist, create it. Unless you copy it, Librarian search and Librarian index creation will not work.
Once these procedure completes, do logout. It is a must.
When DataBag has been installed correctly, its mode should be just the same as what the following drawing shows:
If the mode is different, please set it by your hand from WorkSpace. Because DataBag keeps user's registration key file within DataBag.app folder, registration may fail if improper mode is set.
