is a powerful font conversion utility that prepares Macintosh and DOS Adobe Type 1 fonts for use under NEXTSTEP, making the large number of PostScript fonts available. MagicType creates the NEXTSTEP specific font metric information and encoding vectors and adjusts font family and font type names to NEXTSTEP standard.
Font Metric Information
MagicType preserves as much font metric information as possible. If the source fonts include screenfont files (Macintosh ) or PFM files ( DOS ), MagicType takes over the kerning pair information into the NEXTSTEP fonts. This way you obtain the high-quality typefaces that are needed in DTP and design software.
Encoding Vector Translation
MagicType will adjust the font's encoding vector to standard encoding so special characters like odieresis or udieresis are handled properly. Optionally, this feature may also be disabled, so that fonts that define their own encoding vector can be converted.
Font Name Translation
Due to filesystem restrictions DOS and Macintosh systems use a different naming convention for font families and types. MagicType extracts the correct font names from the PostScript programs, so font family and type appear correctly in the font panel.
Automatic Installation
MagicType can place converted fonts in any folder. Optionally automatic installation can be enabled, so that converted fonts available immediately after conversion. Fonts may be installed system wide or for individual users only.
