select the diskette in the Workspace Browser
X Double-click the file DBCmdr.pkg to launch
the Installer application
The Installer Application
The Installer is a standard (NeXT supplied) application for installing software. The Installer prompts for required information and provides feedback on the progress of the installation. The Installer supports the following operations on software packages:
X Install - place software in the appropriate
locations and prepare it for operation
X Delete - remove software from its installed
locations and delete it
X Compress - leave software on the computer
but compress its files to save space
X Expand - expand a software package which
has been compressed using the installer
X List - display the contents of the software
package
All Installer operations are performed from the installer panel. To continue the installation process, select the Install option.
The Installation Directory
Installer prompts for a destination directory for the DBCommander product before proceeding. DBCommander expects to be installed in /LocalApps, but may be installed in any location. Enter the desired target directory by selecting it from the panel Installer provides for this purpose. Installer asks for confirmation of the target directory and proceeds with the installation.
Installation Processing
The installation process takes a few minutes to complete. During processing, Installer displays progress in the Installer panel. A log file documenting the installation process is kept during the installation process. This file can be viewed by selecting the Log option from the pop-up menu on the Installer panel. When the installation has completed, the Installer displays a message signifying that installation is complete. Remove the DBCommander diskette and store it in a safe location.
Demonstrating DBCommander
DBCommander can be run for 5-minute intervals using Demo mode. This option is provided to allow the software to be used when it is not possible, or desirable, to license the software at the time. To use Demo mode, select the Demo command from the Licensing panel when it is displayed. The database access layer of DBCommander will discontinue operation after 5 minutes.
Licensing DBCommander
DBCommander must be licensed in order to function without shutting down database access. Once the software has been purchased and you have installed the software package:
X Double-click the DBCommander icon in the
Workspace Browser to launch the application
X A licensing panel will appear. Note the
license number and host id information
presented on this panel
X Call DBSA, (505) 662-5619, to get an
authorization key for the host / license
combination. If you are licensing a previously
obtained demonstration copy you will also be
assigned a permanent license id
X Enter the authorization key, exactly as
presented by DBSA.
X Select the License command to save the
authorization key and activate the software
X Select the Close command to close the
licensing panel
Performing Initial Configuration
DBCommander requires two settings in the General Preferences panel to be updated if the software is installed in a location other than /LocalApps. In order to function properly, the Sybase directory, and Template directory entries should be set as described in Help under Support_Tools->General Preferences.
Improv API Support
The Improv data transfer functions supplied with DBCommander make use of the Improv API, a package provided by Lotus to allow applications to interact with Improv. No special configuration is required to take advantage of this capability.
In Case Of Difficulties
If there are any difficulties with the installation process, try using the Installer to Delete the DBCommander package and re-install it. If problems persist, contact DBSA.
