  2. BackManager 1.4 by Harmony Data Systems is now available.

  4. BackManager came out of my one big complaint with the NeXT user interface.
  5. The program dock is the only simple way of launching applications, and it only
  6. holds twelve applications. Of course, there are other methods of launching 
  7. applications, but none were quick and simple enough for me. I hate to spend a
  8. lot of time running applications. And what about commonly accessed files and 
  9. directories? We have the shelf in the Workspace manager , but it's space is 
  10. limited. BackManager is my answer.

  12. You use BackManager's simple file browser like interface to create menu 
  13. definition files. You can drag anything from the Workspace (or any application
  14. that allows you to drag files to the Workspace) to the MenuEditor. Now, when 
  15. you click the left mouse button on the background and choose an item, you get
  16. the same result as if you double clicked on the item in the Workspace
  17.  
  18. And because BackManager does not work with most background image utilities, it
  19. also displays images on your background.  You can specify specific files or 
  20. directories, which can be changed in a specified amount of time or each time
  21. you start BackManager, either sequentially or randomly.

  25. 1. Preferences for scaled or centered images were not saved properly.

  27. 2. HP binaries now are included (untested at this time)

  31. 1. The sample menu included was corrupt in 1.2. Attempts to delete items in the
  32.    menu would cause the app to fail.

  34. 2. Item #1 below did not work. Second copies of applications were still 
  35.    launched.

  39. 1. If an application is already running, it will be given the focus, or the 
  40.    control key can be held down to launch a second copy.

  42. 2. The dock no longer gets covered up.

  44. 3. Dynamic menus are read much faster and now include all files in a directory.
  45.    Other bugs w/ dynamic menus fixed.
  46.  
  47. 4. Applications can be launched with no icon.
  48.  
  49. 5. You can choose if a background image is tiled, centered, or scaled.
  50.  
  51. BackManager is shareware for Intel, Motorola, and HP hardware and can be 
  52. registered for $30.00.
