  1. WELCOME TO "TEUERKOM"!

  3. RCN presents you Teuerkom, a freeware application, that enables you to keep
  4. an eye on your phone charges when calling from or within Germany with the Deutsche Teuerkom -- sorry: Telekom -- AG. Teuerkom "knows" about the new
  5. tariffs that are in effect in Germany since January 1, 1996.

  8. TEUERKOM

  10. Who's not familiar with the following situation: Since January 1, 1996, almost
  11. everyone tries to minimize his or her phone charges. Of course, you could have
  12. a stop watch at hand when you call somebody, but it does not show you how many
  13. Pfennig or Deutschmark you have spent already--especially not if it's a long
  14. distance or even international call where your phone bill would rise faster
  15. than you could calculate the fees!
  16.  
  17. That's where Teuerkom comes in: you activate its timer at the beginning of a
  18. call, and you stop it when you're finished. During the call, Teuerkom shows you
  19. exactly how long you are talking already, how much time remains until the next
  20. unit is charged, and the amount you will have to pay for the call up to this
  21. moment.

  23. Teuerkom offers you several features that extend by far the comfort an ordinary
  24. call-fee counter might offer:
  25.  
  26.     * The complete range of domestic and international rates of the German
  27.       Telekom is supported. With a mouse-click, you switch between the
  28.       different domestic rates resp. the destination countries for your call.
  29.  
  30.     * All public holidays -- and the "family day" on February 25, 1996,
  31.       announced to appease the public after the troubles that occured on
  32.       Jan 1st, 1996, when the public branch exchanges were upgraded to the new
  33.       billing software -- will be taken into account.
  34.  
  35.     * For each rate (city, region 50, region 200, long distance and
  36.       international) you can set a different visual and/or acoustic alarm that
  37.       reminds you in time when the next unit is about to begin.
  38.  
  39.     * Teuerkom provides for charge (pre-)calculation, too: simply choose the
  40.       corresponding rate or country and enter the expected or measured duration
  41.       of your phone call -- Teuerkom instantly displays the charge you will
  42.       have or would have to pay.

  44.     * Integrated into Teuerkom is a "total fee" counter whose value is updated
  45.       automatically after each call. The "grand total" is preserved beyond the
  46.       single sessions with Teuerkom.

  48.     * Simple command line management for controlling from other programs like
  49.       PPP.
  50.  
  51.     * It is possible to switch the tariff zone during the call.
  52.  
  53.     * The timer can be configured to auto-start and/or auto-stop after
  54.       hiding/unhiding the application.

  57. Teuerkom is in its "beta" phase now; some features are still missing but will
  58. be added with the next released versions, including:

  60.     * Better Online Help
  61.     * Support of other tariffs (e. g. for handies)
  62.     * API for invocation by other programs
  63.     * support for hardware in order to enable the user to dial a number
  64.           from within Teuerkom
  65.  
  66. Teuerkom will be available for all four NEXTSTEP platforms (Motorola, Intel,
  67. HP, and Sun). The most recent version of Teuerkom can be found at the following
