  5.                 The MPEGHelper application
  6.  
  7. ATTENTION..you need gnutar and gzip to unpack this package.

  10. This is a frontend to the MPEG L3 sound codec tools from the 
  11. Fraunhofer Gesellschaft IIS. These tools are SHAREWARE. Only
  12. this frontend is GNUware.
  13.  
  14. I do appologize for not having completed the documentation in the 
  15. style I use to do it. That's mainly because there are tons of other thing
  16. to do :-(.

  18. So please read the online help and the included manual pages to 
  19. find out about the parameters of the codec tools and MPEG L3 in detail.
  20. L3 MPEG allows a 90% (!) space saving for CD quality sounds, but realtime playback requires a fast machine (HPPA, SPARC20 or P5).

  22. The handling of the frontend should be quite simple. Open a file, choose
  23. the tools and start the conversion. Thats it.

  26. The Package

  28. Version 0.8 comes in two packages. The main MPEGHelper.0.8.NIHS.tar.gz 
  29. archive includes:

  31.  - MPEGHelper.app. A FAT binary for NeXT, Intel, HP and Sparc hardware 
  32.    with FAT l3enc/dec binaries.
  33.  
  34.  - An Examples directory containing two simple examples of compressed
  35.    MPEG L3 sounds. They are small to keep the size of the package low.

  37.  - Online help...minimal

  39.  - Some documentation.

  41. The source package MPEGHelper.0.8.s.tar.gz comes with:

  43.  - Full sourcecode (without the license sensitive sections).

  46. section. A seperate packages with the FhG UNIX tools only and one with more example files is availble too.

  51. The latest version of this application will be available at the
  52. ftp.nmr.embl-heidelberg.de, ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de,
  53. ftp.fhg.de or ftp.cs.orst.edu anonymous ftp servers. There is a

  62. Compiling
  63.  
  64. This version includes all the source code necessary to recompile the
  65. program from scratch. It does not come with all the libraries and it 
  66. only has quad fat precompiled code for the registration sensitive 
  67. areas! 
  68. You might need to get the MiscKit project (Version 1.5.0 or higher) 
  69. from the archives.

  104. This does not apply to the ObjectWare used, which most likely comes
  105. with its own licensing rules (e.g. code that belongs to the MiscKit
  106. project).

  110. the permission. I don't want to have different, confusingly
  111. incompatible versions running around the world.
