  20. TalkBack is a multimedia conferencing program for the NeXT.
  21.  
  22. TalkBack version 1.01 DEMO is FREE.  That's right; it costs 
  23. $0.00, and is not crippled in any way.
  24.  
  25. Here's the reason why we are giving this version away for 
  26. nothing:
  27.  
  28. We started writing TalkBack using NeXTSTEP 2.1.  Being a 
  29. small company, we didn't have advance access to 3.0 like the 
  30. Big Guys.  Now that we have 3.0, we've decided that TalkBack 
  31. can greatly benefit from the use of the new 3.0 features.
  32.  
  33. So we were faced with a tricky decision.  Should we ignore 
  34. 3.0 for a while longer, and polish off the 2.1 version of 
  35. TalkBack, or should we devote all our energy to creating a 
  36. new TalkBack, taking full advantage of NeXTSTEP 3.0 (and 
  37. make people wait even longer)?  We decided to try something 
  38. a bit different.

  40. We have frozen development of the 2.1-compatible TalkBack, 
  41. and are releasing it as freeware, so that the people who 
  42. have been waiting for TalkBack can start using it, while we 
  43. work on the much more powerful TalkBack for 3.0.

  45. Here are the catches:
  46.  
  47.  
  48. - TalkBack 1.01 is distributed as-is, with no warranties or 
  49. support of any kind
  50.  
  51. - TalkBack 1.01 will not be upgraded in any way, including 
  52. bug fixes or new features
  53.  
  54. - TalkBack 1.01 will not be message-compatible with future 
  55. versions of TalkBack
  56.  
  57. - TalkBack 1.01 is NOT in the public domain; it can be 
  58. freely distributed, but not sold
  59.  
  60. - Persons wishing to distribute TalkBack 1.01 as part of a 
  61. collection of NeXT demonstration software should contact 
  62. NightShade Software for permission
  63.  
  64. Work is already underway on the 3.0-specific version of 
  65. TalkBack.  This will NOT be a free program; it will be a 
  66. fully supported commercial application, with many powerful 
  67. new features.

  70. II. Installation
  71. ==========================================================

  73. The archive TalkBack1.01.tar.Z should contain this README 
  74. file, and TalkBack.app.  TalkBack.app should be installed 
  75. either in ~/Apps or in /LocalApps.
  76.  
  77. When you first run TalkBack, be sure to set your complete 
  78. hostname in Info->Preferences->Configuration.  After doing 
  79. this, you must quit and restart the program.  This is 
  80. essential for TalkBack to operate correctly. Do not enter 
  81. your IP address; TalkBack does not yet understand IP 
  82. addresses.  Read the online help for more information.

  84. Please ensure that you have adequate disk space for TalkBack 
  85. archives. At this point in time, no disk compression is 
  86. implemented, and TalkBack archives can eat hard drive space 
  87. very quickly.  You can use the Conference->Empty feature to 
  88. restore disk space in the middle of a conference.

  91. III. NeXTSTEP 3.0 Notes

  94. TalkBack 1.01 DEMO was compiled using NeXTSTEP 2.2.  We have 
  95. made some minor programming adjustments to ensure that it 
  96. works reasonably well under NeXTSTEP 3.0.
  97.  
  98. Because of a change NeXT made in the 3.0 AppKit, you MUST 
  99. turn on Public Window Server in the Preferences application 
  100. in order to use TalkBack.  We hate this as much as you do, 
  101. and advise you to turn off Public Window Server except when 
  102. using TalkBack.  The commercial version of TalkBack (for 
  103. 3.0) will NOT require Public Window Server to be on.
