  1. MailCall is a simple NeXTSTEP application to check the spool file
  2. for incoming mail.  It puts up a window listing the "From" and
  3. "Subject" lines of any messages it finds, and will play a sound
  4. when a new message arrives.  It also indicates which messages are
  5. in NeXTmail formats (MailCall does not know about MIME formatted
  6. messages).  There are a few preferences to modify the behavior of
  7. MailCall.

  9. The file MailCall_2.9.2.tar.Z is only for those users who are still
  10. running NeXTSTEP release 2.x.  It will work on later versions of
  11. NeXTSTEP for NeXT hardware, but if you're running NeXTSTEP 3.0 or
  12. later then you'll probably want an application called CheckMail
  13. (which is currently at version 3.0).  Note that a lot has changed
  14. between MailCall 2.9.2 and CheckMail 3.0.  Among other things,
  15. CheckMail can recognized MIME-formatted messages.

  17. CheckMail is really just a newer version of MailCall.  The name
  18. was changed because some application launchers seem to get confused
  19. and will use the icon for Mail.app when displaying MailCall.  The
  20. original MailCall application was written by Dennis Smyers.  He
  21. released version 2.1 in 1992.
