  1. Welcome to the official Xnext distribution!
  2.  
  3. Xnext is an X server for NEXTSTEP platforms that supports various
  4. screen depths reflecting the NeXT and DriverKit modes.
  5. An X screen that's realised as a window in the common NEXTSTEP UI
  6. enables you to start or display X11 applications on your system.
  7.  
  8.   DISTRIBUTION PARTS
  9.  
  10. Xnext consists of the following NEXTSTEP packages:
  11.  Xnext-install.rtf          The Xnext installation guide
  12.  Xnext-basicdist.pkg        X11R6 basic distribution.
  13.  Xnext-fonts.pkg            X11R6 fonts and bitmap data (arch-indep.)
  14.  Xnext-server.pkg           Xnext server executable.
  15.  Xnext.app.NIHS.b.tar.gz    A NEXTSTEP frontend to the server.
  16.  Xnext-dist.pkg             Additional X11R6 executables and manual pages.

  18.  Xnext-libs.pkg             Xnext development kit (quad-fat)
  19.  Xnext-man-include.pkg      X11R6 manual pages and header files.

  21. You need the Xnext-basicdist.pkg,  the Xnext-fonts.pkg,  and the
  22. Xnext-server.pkg to successfully run Xnext.  Install them in this
  23. order, if possible.  The Xnext-dist.pkg contains additional xapps.

  25.  NOTE: There are different packages for each architecture (except
  26.        for the libraries and architecture independent data).
  27.  
  28. If you like to compile your own xapps, you need the Xnext-libs.pkg
  29. and the Xnext-man-include.pkg which contain the "Xnext development
  30. kit".

  32.   RELEASE NUMBERS
  33.  
  34. The packages have release numbers in their names (e.g. the fonts
  35. package will always be named Xnext-fonts.6.NIHS.d.tar.gz since
  36. this is Release 6 of the X System).  So if the package changes on
  37. your FTP server, you can tell from the numbers in the name whether
  38. or not the data has changed.  In some cases the packaging will
  39. change, though the contents remain the same.

  46.   SHAREWARE
  47.  
  48. Xnext is shareware -- if you want to use the software, you have to
  49. buy it.  The registration fee is US$20 (or 30DM, if you like).
  50.

  52. (it's in the /usr/X11R6 folder: Xnext-Registration.rtf).
