  1. This is the ftp readme for Common Music. You can get the newest
  2. release via anonymous ftp from either ftp.zkm.de (192.101.28.17)
  3. or ccrma-ftp.stanford.edu (36.49.0.93) in the pub/ directory:

  5.     cm.tar.Z        Unix archive, use also for Mac
  6.     cm.zip            DOS archive
  7.  
  8. If you use Common Music on the Mac, take cm.tar.Z and also:
  9.  
  10.     macunix.sit.hqx
  11.  
  12. which contains two utilities, MacCompress and Tar, for
  13. uncompressing and untarring unix tar.Z files on the Mac. Restore
  14. macunix.sit.hqx using the Macintosh Stuffit utility and then see
  15. the enclosed readme for more information.

  17. HOW TO USE ANONYMOUS FTP
  18.  
  19. FTP only works if your computer is connected to the internet.
  20. Use the ftp command to connect to either ftp.zkm.de or
  21. ccrma-ftp.stanford.edu. Then login with the name:
  22.  
  23.     anonymous
  24.  
  25. and password:
  26.  
  27.     user@host
  28.  
  29. where user@host is your actual login name and location.
  30. Then type:
  31.  
  32.     cd pub
  33.  
  34. to move to the ftp pub directory.  Next type:
  35.  
  36.     bin
  37.  
  38. to set the transfer mode to binary. Don't forget to do this!
  39. Then type:
  40.  
  41.     get cm.tar.Z
  42.  
  43. to transfer the archive file to your machine. Once ftp notifies
  44. you that the transfer is complete (the transfer itself may take
  45. a very long time...) type:
  46.  
  47.     quit
  48.  
  49. to exit from the ftp program. That't it!
  50.  
  51. HOW TO RESTORE THE SOURCES
  52.  
  53. First, make a new directory to restore the sources in.  On Unix
  54. or DOS you can use the mkdir command:
  55.  
  56.     mkdir cm
  57.  
  58. where cm is replaced by whatever directory name you want to use
  59. for the source directory.  Note that if you are reinstalling
  60. Common Music, it is best to delete or move the current sources and
  61. reinstall in an empty directory. This is because the new archive
  62. may contain renamed files or a different directory structure.
  63. Next, move the ftp archive from wherever it currently is to the
  64. new source directory:
  65.  
  66. Unix:
  67.     mv cm.tar cm
  68. DOS:
  69.     move cm.zip cm
  70.  
  71. Note that the actual directory path to the cm.tar or cm.zip file
  72. as well as the name of the source directory will depend on what
  73. you have done in the preceding steps.  Next change directories
  74. to the the new source directory:

  76.     cd cm
  77.  
  78. And then restore the archive:
  79.  
  80. Unix:
  81.     zcat cm.tar.Z | tar xvf -
  82. DOS:
  83.     pkunzip -d cm.zip
  84.  
  85. This restores all the sources from the archive file into the new
  86. source direcory.  Ignore any warning message you see.  Once the
  87. sources have been restored you may delete the archive or save it
  88. as a backup:

  90. Unix:
  91.     rm cm.tar.Z
  92. DOS
  93.     del cm.zip
  94.  
  95. Then see Common Music's README file for further instructions about
  96. installing the system.
