  2.   This is the announce of the teTeX-0.4, a TeX distribution for UNIX

  14. The first two sites are CTAN (Comprehensive TeX Archive Network) sites. Try

  18. The third site is a well known Linux site which is regularly dumped
  19. onto CD-ROMs. So, you might get teTeX on a Linux CD that way (although
  20. teTeX origins from Linux, it can be used on other UNIX systems as well).

  23.  Getting the distribution + installation
  24. ===========================================================================

  26. To install teTeX follow the instructions in
  27.   distrib/INSTALL.src: if you want to compile the binaries yourself
  28.   distrib/INSTALL.bin: if you want to use precompiled binaries.

  62. For those who do not know what teTeX is: teTeX is a complete TeX
  63. distribution for UNIX compatible systems. My main aims when putting
  64. things together have been:

  66.     - create something simple to install, use and maintain
  67.     - include as much useful documentation as possible
  68.     - test as much as possible and try to avoid bugs
  69.

  75. Main features of the teTeX distribution:

  77. - file organisation TDS (TeX Directory Structure) Standard compliant
  78. - very easy to install and customize (install.sh and texconfig utility)
  79. - LaTeX2e (June 1996) together with lots of
  80.   extra LaTeX packages (most packages mentioned in the LaTeX Companion)
  81. - a lot of documentation: more than 130 dvi/ps-files, teTeX manual, FAQs
  82. - support for read-only inputs tree (i.e. possibility to use alternate
  83.   destination for newly created fonts)
  84. - ready for a multi platform setup
  85. - fast file searching. web2c patched to work with kpathsea-2.6. The
  86.   search paths are chosen to give high performance.
  87. - run-time configuration files for dvi-drivers and tex+friends.
  88. - a nice set of fonts to play with: PostScript fonts, ams, pandora, cm,
  89.   dc, oldgerman and more. All easily accessible by LaTeX.

  91. - the whole distribution can be installed anywhere in the
  92.   filesystem (e.g. /usr/TeX or /usr/local/tex). You do not
  93.   need to set any environment variable as long as you keep
  94.   the original structure of the package.

  168. The sources may compile on other UNIX compatible platforms, too. You
  169. need GNU make and gcc. I am not sure if lex does work on all systems, but
  170. at least flex did alway work.
