  12. Initially I wrote this program two years ago for my own children to 
  13. practise german orthography. Then some people on the net asked for it.
  14. I translated it into english, fixed some bugs, wrote help texts, and 
  15. compiled it quadruple-fat. So here it is. Have fun with it.

  23. Ortografie is a spelling trainer.
  24.  
  25. To work successfully with this program, YOU NEED SOUND OUTPUT 
  26. (speakers) AND SOUND INPUT (a microphone) on your computer.
  27.  
  28. After starting the program, you can enter spoken words and a written 
  29. equivalent for each of them. The words may be in the same language or 
  30. in different. For example, you can speak an englich word and enter 
  31. it's german spelling.

  33. Then, the computer tests you. The words are spoken by the computer, 
  34. you type their right spelling. At least, you try. Also, the computer 
  35. remembers what words you know and in wich words you are doing errors.
  36. Well-known words are tested less frequently.

  38. Ortografie is free software (about warranty etc. see the Help menu in 
  39. the application). Source code is provided too. You can also change the
  40. audio comments of the program if you have a microphone - open the files
  41. in the .lproj directories in the app wrapper and record what you want. 
  42. I find my own speaking very silly, for example.

  44. Ortografie comes in two languages, english and german. The program is 
  45. compiled for all architectures but tested only under NEXTSTEP 3.3 
  46. on NeXT Hardware.

  48. I tested the program on Intel as well, but didn't have much luck 
  49. with the Sound I/O (the Sound object resp. the driver). In my PC there
  50. is only a terrible SoundBlaster 8 compatible card, and all available
  51. drivers don't work well with it. Maybe it's not a driver problem? It
  52. seems as if the Sound object doesn't send the didRecord: message
  53. after the second recording. I tested Sound.app (from /NextDeveloper/Demos)
  54. as well and it also doesn't work. If you get Sound.app to work,
  55. Ortografie should work too.

  57. Please let me know in case you got Ortografie to work on Intel.
