  112. This is a comprehensive alphabetic listing of Internet sites accepting
  113. Anonymous FTP. To find out what Anonymous FTP is and how to use it, read
  114. the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) List, distributed separately.

  116. Site   : site address (no IP numbers, they change too frequently)
  117. Country: country where site is located
  118. GMT    : hours from GMT (+/-)
  119. Date   : date of last modification for site
  120. Source : last updater of entry or source of information
  121. Alias  : any listed aliases (machinenames or 'netnames', the nicknames
  122.          by which they are known to the people most using them)
  123. Admin  : administrative address for comments or reporting problems
  124. Organ  : organization operating site and location in country
  125. Server : email server address and instructions if available
  126. System : type of server (hardware and Operating System if known)
  127. URL    : Universal Resource Locator, to be used with a World Wide Web browser
  128. Comment: any general comments or restrictions
  129. Files  : types of files, archives, or mirrors available

  131. If, for some reason(s), you can't use the sitename (also called cname)
  132. but need the so called IP address, here's how to get it:

  134. Easiest for most people, assuming they're not in a hurry, is to
  135. send mail to:

  147. For more information send the single word 'help' to the same address.
  148. If you're able to use the 'nslookup' command on your system you can
  149. find out interactively. On a Unix system try 'man nslookup' for help
  150. on using nslookup. Another way is to use 'telnet <sitename>', normally
  151. that shows the IP address of the site as well.
  152.  
  153. Unless otherwise stated, all sites take 'anonymous' for the username
  154. and your e-mail address for the password. A side remark on this
  155. one: I only check for username 'anonymous', it's not called Anonymous
  156. FTP for nothing. But if you find a site that does accept 'ftp', guest'
  157. or something like that (with an e-mail address for the password) and
  158. not 'anonymous', let me know and I'll add it to the list. Most sites
  159. accept username 'ftp' as well. Another note on my checking of sites:
  160. if I had a problem connecting to a site, you will find a remark about
  161. that in the Comment: line; Problem: symptom of problem. This does
  162. not mean that that site is no longer operational, just that it wasn't
  163. reachable for me at that moment.

  165. Dates are represented in the Day-Month-Year format.

  167. Some of the more common abbreviations used in this list are:

  175. Times are expressed in GMT + or - several hours, e.g. +1 means GMT+1,
  176. -5 means GMT-5. I don't want to use daylight savings or something
  177. like summertime or whatever because it complicates matters. I'm going

  201. Please remember to use sites during off-peak (1800-0600 or 6pm-6am
  202. local time) hours and within your area, before jumping to international
  203. archives. If they have regional access or limited links, respect their
  204. restrictions.
  205. And remember that mirrors are here for a reason. It's often much faster
  206. to check if the file(s) you're looking for are mirrored close by and
  207. getting them there, than getting them from somewhere distant (and slow).
  208.  
  209. Most important of all:
  210. Anonymous FTP access is a privilege and can be denied at any time.
  211. Don't ruin it for yourself and lots of others by overusing a site
  212. or not abiding by their rules.
  213.  
  214. If you notice any changes to a site, please let me know. Site admins
  215. should read my FAQ for the specific information I need. Note: this
  216. release has some sites that haven't been checked yet, or have been
  217. checked but I was unable to fill in all the information. This is not
  218. standard procedure, but a temporary thing (my backlogs were starting
  219. to grow a bit too big).

  221. A comment on Archie: Use this service! For those that don't know what
  222. Archie is, please read my FAQ. Also, services like gopher or WWW can
  223. be much easier to use than 'bare bones' FTP. Try them.
