- After a lot of time consuming lessons about artists (Wiek, I hope you
- finally finish school), a few nasty letters with those who see this as a
- business rather than a fun hobby (hey Patrick, hope you found something
- profitable to work on), a faltering 2 year project from hell (4gen),
- many almost forgotten memories of actually finishing a game, and lots of
- depressing thoughts about wading through the big joke we call college,
- I decided to pick up an old game, dust it off, paint it, smooth the dents,
- and present it to all you game nuts... (lots of musician prodding was
- also required)
-
- I hope everyone is glad I did. In a time where 3d, texture mapped,
- gouraud shaded, 1st person perspective, 6 DOF, super blow'em'up, dark
- gushing blood, action games are all that can be seen on the retail rack,
- I've decided to try something a little different, more classic, less
- bloody, more smiley. This is a cute little shareware game about a cuddly
- little red guy named Aro (pronounced Arrow), who wanders around in a
- zany land filled with slimes, strange bouncing creatures, magical potions,
- funky trees, blue skies, orange sunsets, twinkly stars, and crumbling
- castles. There is no shooting of any kind in this game >8)
-
- [Notes about ZM3]
-
- This game is actually an enhanced version of a game I wrote sometime
- 'back in the days'. The original was called ZipMan III. ZipMan III was
- designed and written on a 386sx16, and was thus virtually unplayable on
- 'powerful' 486dx33s as it went way too fast. So, for those of you who
- played ZM3, here's a list of some of the new stuff:
-
- - Almost totally new graphics (all drawn by me, JPD)
- - A top speed (maxs out at 32 FPS-no more 300 FPS!)
- - Quite a few new monsters
- - Much improved menu code (more friendly)
- - Joystick support (yes!)
- - More professional "look & feel", from shareware screen to
- documentation.
- - Slightly improved game mechanics (the running and jumping is smoother).
- - and of course, totally new levels (lots of 'em)

- ~1F TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
- ~1C ════════════════════════════════════
-
- We'll fill in this section more as bug reports come in.
-
- ~1A "I can't get any sound to come from my sound card..."
-
- - Make sure all your DOS sound drivers are properly loaded.
- (your sound card will probably come with install disks that
- setup the sound drivers).
- - Make sure you selected the proper sound card in the setup menu.
- - Check your port, IRQ, and DMA settings
- (your sound card should come with setup utilities which
- will auto-detect those and display them for you [just write
- 'em down and plug 'em into the setup]).
- - Make sure your speakers are turned on and the volume is turned up.
- - We've never tested with a GUS (sorry, I don't know anyone who has one).
- - If worst comes to worst, play the game without sound (it's still fun!).
-
-
- ~1A "My joystick doesn't seem to work properly"
-
- - Make sure your joystick is plugged in.
- - Run the setup program, choose input device/joystick, and twirl
- your joystick handle around several times then press the button.
- - We only tested the game with a Gravis Gamepad (highly recommended for
- this game!) since we can't imagine anyone using anything else (a flight
- stick wouldn't do too much for you).
-
-
- ~1A "I get white snow on my screen..."
-
- - In the settings menu, turn Retrace On and Cycle On
- - If that doesn't work, turn Retrace Off and Cycle Off
-
-

- - retrace option added
- - error in end demo (registered version) fixed
- - AroEdit now available.

- ~1F HINTS
- ~1C ════════════════════════════════════
-
- You have unlimited lives, just keep pressing enter when it reads
- 'Game Over'. Save your game when you reach new levels. It will only
- save which level you are on and how many points you have.
-
- Reverse gravity potions wear off, so make sure to wait in a spot where
- you can flip around onto some ground. In some sections you will have to
- fall on another reverse gravity potion in order to continue along.
-
- Springers are very easy. Simply walk up and wait in front of them.
- They will spring right over you. Jumping over them is not recommended.
-
- Some items like springs and bricks can be pushed. If you push them off
- a ledge, they will fall down, sometimes allowing you to cross treacherous
- spots.
-
- Some bricks fall shortly after you put weight on them. Be very careful
- not to stand on them longer than you have to.
-
- Points are just points, so if you're having trouble passing a level,
- leave them behind!
-
- Some exit doors will appear closed, in which case you must first obtain
- a key. The key is usually farther in the level. Some exit doors only
- appear after you get the key, if you can't go on after you get the key, then
- turn around and you might find the exit behind you.
