Vector formats allow for a richer, fuller representation of the image as they do not rely on pixels for their structure. Vector-based images consist of objects with defined properties. For example, if a user puts a picture of a circle in their drawing they could go back later and change its orientation, color and line thickness or enlarge the image to any size and get smooth lines. Raster images are pixel-based so if a user puts a circle into their drawing, they might not be able to go back and edit it later with smooth results. Enlarging the image would merely increase the number of pixels which would create jaggy, rough looking edges. Vector images are perfect for projects like company logos because the image is reusable and scalable to any size without the pixel problems associated with bitmaps. The company could use a small version of the logo in one spot and a larger version of the logo in another without losing any of the integrity of the image or having to create two separate images. Take a look at this live demonstration .

Better Printout Quality

Vector graphics produce superior print output for the reasons mentioned above. When a bitmap image, such as GIF, is sent to
a 300 dpi printer, the image is most likely output to a different resolution than the original image. Vector graphics, such
as CMX, retain the original image quality and are unaffected by a printer's resolution.

Automatic Transparency

The background of vector graphics is automatically transparent. This means there is no need to rely on masking tools and
additional formatting steps to remove unwanted backgrounds.

Performance

Under certain circumstances, vector images are more economical in terms of space. Vector formats such as CMX can take up approximately 4-6 times less bandwidth than raster formats such as GIF.

This viewer is the first open standard vector format offered to Internet users. It gives you access to larger selections of clipart such as the huge libraries found in products like CorelDRAW or Corel GALLERY. It will change the look of online graphics by opening the realm of vector graphics to Internet users.

Vector Format Widely Used

Vector formats such as CMX or CDR are widely used around the world. Corel's user base alone is estimated at 2.5 million. This viewer gives Corel users the opportunity to publish a vast repository of graphic arts without compromising the quality of the original illustration. Similarly, Corel users can continue to use a familiar program such as CorelDRAW to create rich graphics for the Internet. Check out the CMX samples.
