  11. What you *SHOULD* know:

  14. This is Wincode v2.6.6 PRE-RELEASE. Before using this program, make a backup of
  15. your v2.6.1 in case this version has a bug that conflicts with your system. Don't
  16. say we never warned you ;-)
  17.  
  18. No, we are NOT saying that it has bugs (at least not ones we can find ;-) ;-)
  19. but for reasons stated below, we are being cautious. This version represents a
  20. fresh port to an updated language and can even be considered a 1.0 in terms of
  21. the new look for Wincode. In the coming months we will be updating in minor-
  22. minor versions to v2.7.0 which *should* represent the cleanest possible 16-bit
  23. version before we move to Win95/NT 32-bit versions. Keep an eye out for updated
  24. info. This can be easily obtained by sending a BLANK e-mail to:

  30. The reason we call this a 'pre-release' is that our original intention was for
  31. the next version to be 2.7. However, with the coming of Borland Delphi (the
  32. new visual Pascal development system) and its promise for future 32-bit support,
  33. we decided to port Wincode immediately. Therefore, different parts of the
  34. application were left 'in development' (such as BINHEX encoding support) and
  35. we concentrated our efforts on the port. We are happy to say that the port
  36. went smoothly and Wincode has greatly improved. You will notice *many* new
  37. features that seem to leave the old Wincode in the dust ;-) The one draw-
  38. back of the new version, however, is the increased file size. The Wincode
  39. package has almost doubled in size. This is due to the new Borland compiler
  40. and VCL. We are told that the 32-bit compiler *will* shrink this size by about
  41. 25% so look for smaller executables in the future. :-)

  43. This version is also being distributed as a sort of working BETA. Though it has
  44. been tested in Win 3.1x, it has NOT been *fully* tested in Win95. Therefore,
  45. the standard disclaimer is that your mileage may vary :-) Though we did have
  46. BETA releases of Win95 on hand, we did not develop in that environment for the
  47. current release. There are still millions of people that did not jump into
  48. the hype and drop Win 3.1x ;-) We will be providing a 32-bit Win95/NT version
  49. of Wincode in the coming months. However, we will still support Win 3.1x as
  50. long as possible - in other words, there will be two versions of Wincode in
  51. the coming months each targeted to the operating system.

  53. With the formation of the _Snappy_ Software internet site, users now have a
  54. place where they are guaranteed to be able to get the latest news and updates
  55. for _Snappy_ software. Please note that our server is ONLY online between
  56. midnight and noon Eastern Standard time 7 days a week. It is NOT a 24 hour
  57. server though we CAN receive e-mail round the clock. You may get a WARNING
  58. message but please know that your e-mail *will* be delivered. Note that the
  59. times listed here are maintained given that our internet provider is up and
  60. running and our server is not in use for development...

  75. This is a brief list of new features/options:

  77.  - YES, it now supports BINHEX DECODING! We are still beta testing the BINHEX
  78.    ENCODING code but most people are asking for decode first so here it is...
  79.  
  80.  - revamped interface to the latter Windows 3.11 "look" - yes, Win95 is 
  81.    here but we have updated Wincode to use the 3-D look. You will need
  82.    CTL3DV2.DLL to take advantage of this feature. This DLL is a part of
  83.    Win 3.11.

  85.  - new Configuration dialog - tabbed notebook. Makes life much easier :-)

  87.  - Use of Common Dialogs for file encode/decode. In fact, if you select 
  88.    'File|Encode' or 'File|Decode' you can also now change the CODE TYPE by 
  89.    double clicking the dialog TitleBar...

  91.  - Improved speed. Code was ported to Borland Delphi (which explains the 
  92.    larger file size - sorry!) and there will be a TRUE Win95 32-bit version 
  93.    available when Borland releases Delphi32 (by the end of this year..)

  95.  - Fixed Code bugs and the "disappearing Wincode" bug...

  97.  - Improved the interactive Drag and Drop code to allow selection of different
  98.    Code Types for encoding vs decoding.

  100.  - Added links to the forthcoming Auto E-mail engine.

  102.  - Expanded the ButtonBar and menus to include a few other essential features.
