  1. WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
  2. ------------------
  3. There are 3 groups of people that make shareware work.  First
  4. there are the people who write the programs (the authors), Second
  5. there are the people who distribute the programs (the vendors),
  6. and lastly there is you, the end user.
  7.  
  8. The author writes a program and sends it to any number of vendors.
  9. The vendor then charges a fee to distribute the program to the end
  10. user.  This fee (if any) depends on how the vendor distributes the
  11. program.  For example, an on-line service such as CompuServe, 
  12. Genie, etc. charges a connect fee on the time it takes to download
  13. the program.  Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's) generally charge a 
  14. membership fee but do not charge for each download.  Disk vendors 
  15. usually send out catalogs and charge you a certain amount for a 
  16. copy of the program on a disk.  Or, one user may simply give a 
  17. copy to a friend.

  19. The fees these vendors charge are only for the distribution, not 
  20. for the program itself.  The author usually does not get any 
  21. portion of the fee.  These fees cover the vendors costs.

  23. The user can then try the program.  If it meets his or her needs 
  24. and he or she keeps using it they must make a registration 
  25. payment to the author.  If the program does not meet the users 
  26. needs they merely stop using it and need not pay the author 
  27. anything.  The payments to the author are generally the only 
  28. revenues the author gets from the program.  They help to finance 
  29. further development of the program.  The user may receive 
  30. additional materials such as a printed manual when they register.
  31. It depends on the author.

  33. What this means to you is you can try a program before buying
  34. it.  If you continue to use it you must pay the author, otherwise 
  35. you pay nothing.  It also means you get software at a much 
  36. lower price than commercial software since costly advertising and 
  37. distribution is eliminated.  Shareware is a distribution method, 
  38. not a type of software.

  40. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software.
  41. The copyright holder retains all rights, with the exception that 
  42. Shareware programs may be copied and distributed as long as 
  43. certain conditions are met.  These conditions vary from author
  44. to author.

  49. GammaCAD is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge 
  50. (by Gamma Software) to the user for evaluation.  If you 
  51. continue to use GammaCAD after a 60 day trial period, you 
  52. MUST make a registration payment to Gamma Software or 
  53. discontinue use.

  82. HOW TO REGISTER
  83. ---------------   
  84. When you execute the shareware version of the GammaCAD program 
  85. a shareware registration screen is displayed at the beginning of  
  86. the program.  This screen describes the registration policy and   
  87. at the bottom of the screen are two buttons.  Press the TAB key   
  88. to highlight the "Register" button and press Enter or click the   
  89. register button with the mouse.  Then fill in the information on 
  90. the registration menu and select the "Print" button (make sure 
  91. your printer is on and on-line).  Select the "Continue" button to 
  92. exit.

  94. If you prefer you can print the registration invoice directly by  
  95. typing the following command:    
  96.    PRINT REGISTER.TXT   
  97. at a DOS prompt (while in the GammaCAD directory).  Or you can 
  98. highlight the file REGISTER.TXT in the File Manager and select    
  99. "Print" from the "File" menu.  Then fill in the invoice.
