  1. PLAYING GAMBIT VIA COMPUSERVE
  2.  
  3. Playing GAMBIT via CompuServe is straight-forward.  Simply follow 
  4. these steps in order to play in head-to-head competition with another 
  5. opponent.  These steps assume you have a Hayes compatible modem.
  6.  
  7. BEFORE YOU BEGIN, have the following information ready:
  8.  
  9.        Baud Rate    _________       Comm Port    _________

  11. GETTING STARTED:
  12.  
  13.   1.   Logon to CompuServe using the following communications 
  14.        software: PC3 by CompuServe, PROCOMM by Datastorm Technologies,
  15.        or one of the other communications packages as documented in
  16.        "Communications Program Criteria" under the menu choice entitled
  17.        "What Is Online MTM Gaming."
  18.  
  19.   2.   Meet your opponent in the MTM Gaming Lobby(sm) [GO MTMLOBBY].
  20.        If you do not have an opponent, use the MTM Challenge Board(sm) 
  21.        to locate an opponent [GO MTMCHALLENGE] and use the Modem Games 
  22.        Forum [GO MTMFORUM] or CompuServe Mail [GO MAIL] to schedule a 
  23.        match.)

  25.   3.   Once in the Lobby, type a /USERS to get a list of other players
  26.        in the lobby.  Type /HELP to get more assistance with the Lobby
  27.        commands.

  29.    4.  Pair-up with your opponent by typing /CHALLENGE # GAMBIT 
  30.        (where "#" is the player number of your opponent).  Your 
  31.        opponent accepts the challenge by typing /ACCEPT # (where "#" 
  32.        is your number).

  34.    5.  Exit your communications software after you have received the
  35.        following two messages from the Lobby:

  37.        Switch to GAMBIT when connected...
  38.        Connected to [connection ID]
  39.  
  40.        For example, use the F10 key to exit PC3 or use ALT-X to exit
  41.        PROCOMM.  Note: Do not use the Exit to DOS Shell as GAMBIT is 
  42.        too large a program to load within the shell.

  44.    6.  Change to the drive and directory containing GAMBIT and run the 
  45.        game. For example:

  47.        C\>cd \gambit
  48.        C:\GAMBIT>gambit
  49.  
  50.    7.  After the program loads, you will see the main play screen. Use
  51.        your mouse to open the MODEM sub-menu located on the title bar.
  52.        Now select MODEM SETUP from the list of options.
  53.  
  54.    8.  Once you are in the MODEM SETUP sub-menu you can select the COM
  55.        port that your modem is on.  Then select the word OPEN as the baud
  56.        rate.  Valid baud rates are OPEN, 2400, 9600, 19200. Now select
  57.        SAVE MODEM SETUP located at the bottom of the MODEM SETUP sub-menu.

  59.    9.  To finish the connection through the MTM LOBBY select the MODEM
  60.        SETUP sub-menu again.  Then select the ANSWER MODEM sub-menu option.
  61.        GAMBIT will pickup the existing modem connection and attempt to 
  62.        connect you to your opponent.

  64.   10.  Once the connection is established, you can play against your 
  65.        opponent.  You can talk with your opponent by typing normally on the 
  66.        keyboard.

  68. ENDING THE MATCH:

  70.   11.  When you are finish playing chess with your opponent and want to 
  71.        return to the MTMLOBBY do the following.  Use your mouse to select
  72.        open the GAME sub-menu located on the title bar.  Now select QUIT
  73.        from the list of options.  The game will ask you to verify that you
  74.        are exiting the game -- answer YES.

  76.   12.  Restart your communications software and go into terminal mode
  77.        (e.g., in PC3, choose Online).  Upon entering terminal mode, your
  78.        PC will be able to re-establish your existing connection with
  79.        CompuServe.

  81.        For example, if PC3 is your communications package type:

  83.        C:\GAMBIT>cd\
  84.        C>pc3

  86.   13.  Send a BREAK sequence through your communications package to
  87.        CompuServe.  In response, CompuServe will display the following
  88.        prompt:

  90.        >> NET CMD MODE <<
  91.        >>

  93.        Upon receiving this prompt, type the characters 
  94.        
  95.        LG 
  96.        
  97.        to re-enter the MTM Gaming Lobby(sm).  Note, the LG command is
  98.        not echoed back to your screen.  When you have successfully 
  99.        entered the LG command, CompuServe will display the following:

  101.        >> EXIT <<
  102.        Returning to the lobby, enter /HELP for assistance
  103.  
  104.   14.  You are now back in the MTM Gaming Lobby(sm), can use any of the
  105.        Lobby commands, and are now ready to fly again.
