- PLAYING GAMBIT VIA COMPUSERVE

- Playing GAMBIT via CompuServe is straight-forward. Simply follow
- these steps in order to play in head-to-head competition with another
- opponent. These steps assume you have a Hayes compatible modem.

- BEFORE YOU BEGIN, have the following information ready:
-
- Baud Rate _________ Comm Port _________
-
- GETTING STARTED:
-
- 1. Logon to CompuServe using the following communications
- software: PC3 by CompuServe, PROCOMM by Datastorm Technologies,
- or one of the other communications packages as documented in
- "Communications Program Criteria" under the menu choice entitled
- "What Is Online MTM Gaming."

- 2. Meet your opponent in the MTM Gaming Lobby(sm) [GO MTMLOBBY].
- If you do not have an opponent, use the MTM Challenge Board(sm)
- to locate an opponent [GO MTMCHALLENGE] and use the Modem Games
- Forum [GO MTMFORUM] or CompuServe Mail [GO MAIL] to schedule a
- match.)

- 3. Once in the Lobby, type a /USERS to get a list of other players
- in the lobby. Type /HELP to get more assistance with the Lobby
- commands.

- 4. Pair-up with your opponent by typing /CHALLENGE # GAMBIT
- (where "#" is the player number of your opponent). Your
- opponent accepts the challenge by typing /ACCEPT # (where "#"
- is your number).

- 5. Exit your communications software after you have received the
- following two messages from the Lobby:

- Switch to GAMBIT when connected...
- Connected to [connection ID]
-
- For example, use the F10 key to exit PC3 or use ALT-X to exit
- PROCOMM. Note: Do not use the Exit to DOS Shell as GAMBIT is
- too large a program to load within the shell.

- 6. Change to the drive and directory containing GAMBIT and run the
- game. For example:
-
- C\>cd \gambit
- C:\GAMBIT>gambit
-
- 7. After the program loads, you will see the main play screen. Use
- your mouse to open the MODEM sub-menu located on the title bar.
- Now select MODEM SETUP from the list of options.

- 8. Once you are in the MODEM SETUP sub-menu you can select the COM
- port that your modem is on. Then select the word OPEN as the baud
- rate. Valid baud rates are OPEN, 2400, 9600, 19200. Now select
- SAVE MODEM SETUP located at the bottom of the MODEM SETUP sub-menu.

- 9. To finish the connection through the MTM LOBBY select the MODEM
- SETUP sub-menu again. Then select the ANSWER MODEM sub-menu option.
- GAMBIT will pickup the existing modem connection and attempt to
- connect you to your opponent.

- 10. Once the connection is established, you can play against your
- opponent. You can talk with your opponent by typing normally on the
- keyboard.

- ENDING THE MATCH:
-
- 11. When you are finish playing chess with your opponent and want to
- return to the MTMLOBBY do the following. Use your mouse to select
- open the GAME sub-menu located on the title bar. Now select QUIT
- from the list of options. The game will ask you to verify that you
- are exiting the game -- answer YES.

- 12. Restart your communications software and go into terminal mode
- (e.g., in PC3, choose Online). Upon entering terminal mode, your
- PC will be able to re-establish your existing connection with
- CompuServe.

- For example, if PC3 is your communications package type:
-
- C:\GAMBIT>cd\
- C>pc3
-
- 13. Send a BREAK sequence through your communications package to
- CompuServe. In response, CompuServe will display the following
- prompt:

- >> NET CMD MODE <<
- >>

- Upon receiving this prompt, type the characters
-
- LG
-
- to re-enter the MTM Gaming Lobby(sm). Note, the LG command is
- not echoed back to your screen. When you have successfully
- entered the LG command, CompuServe will display the following:

- >> EXIT <<
- Returning to the lobby, enter /HELP for assistance
-
- 14. You are now back in the MTM Gaming Lobby(sm), can use any of the
- Lobby commands, and are now ready to fly again.

- NOTES:

- a message for the Sysops in the Modem Games Forum [GO MTMFORUM].
