  1. Congratulations on your acqusition of Gazebo Chess!
  2.  
  3. The goal of this README is to help you get started as quickly
  4. as possible. To do this you need to  install and then to run
  5. the programs.
  6.  
  7. INSTALLATION
  8.  
  9. You need to be running Windows and place your diskette in
  10. the drive and run the SETUP.EXE program contained on the diskette.
  11. For the purposes of the instructions, we will assume the diskette
  12. drive is A:.
  13.  
  14. In default Windows inside default Program manager this is done
  15. by selecting:
  16.  
  17.         File / Run / A:\SETUP.EXE
  18.  
  19. If you have customized menus or a different program manager,
  20. please just run the SETUP.EXE program from the diskette drive.
  21.  
  22. The installation will start. The installer will check if you
  23. have enough disk space and setup a number of defaults for:
  24.  
  25.     default disk drive
  26.     default directory
  27.  
  28. Feel free to change these. 
  29.  
  30. Then click OK to perform the installation, automatically.
  31.  
  32. INSTALLATION DEFAULTS
  33.  
  34. The installation defaults, by the way, are:
  35.  
  36.         installation to C: drive
  37.         installation to C:\GAZEBO directory
  38.  
  39. Unless you have a good reason to change these, leave them as-is
  40.  
  41. POST-INSTALLATION
  42.  
  43. The installation takes only a minute or two. When it is done,
  44. a Windows group folder will be displayed showing the icons
  45. in the distribution.
  46.  
  47. Presently these consist of:
  48.  
  49.         Gazebo Chess for Windows
  50.  
  51.         Gazebo Chess for DOS
  52.  
  53. Both will run under Windows, however, for convenience.
  54.  
  55. GETTING HELP
  56.  
  57. Both programs have built-in help. In the Windows version,
  58. help is available under the HELP menu. This is standard
  59. windows help. 
  60.  
  61. In the DOS version, use the "help" command.
  62.  
  63. MOVING PIECES
  64.  
  65. You may use the mouse or the arrow keys to move your pieces 
  66. in the Windows version. This involves just locating the piece
  67. with the mouse or moving the lightly flashing square with the 
  68. arrow keys to hover over the piece-to-move. 
  69.  
  70. Then either press the left-mouse-button or press the ENTER key 
  71. (corresponding to whether you are using the mouse or the keyboard 
  72. for piece movement). Then repeat the process with the square
  73. to which you want to move the piece.

  96. FINAL THOUGHTS
  97.  
  98. You will find that the Windows program is essentially
  99. for "show" and is best for new players and children or
  100. merely for a quick non-serious game.
  101.  
  102. You will also find that the DOS program is a rather
  103. serious opponent of significant strength.
