Time Control
Piece Values and how the scoring works.
Time Control
When you set up the "Time Per Move" or the "Total Time" options from the "Level" menu, the computer will assume that there has to be at least 40 each (80 moves total) that have to made in this time, unless the game has come to an end in this time.
The Computer divides the the time left, until the next time control and the moves left. There is a margin of 4 moves to make sure that the Computer does not lose on time, but you can.
In the beginning of the game the Computer thinks around twice as long, since the opening and the middle games are normally the most crucial part of the game.
So when you set the time options the 40 move control is set as well, you can't amend this option, as it is part of the rules of Chess. especially Championship Chess.
Piece Vaules and Values for Attacks etc.
The default values of the pieces are as follows :
The Queen is worth 9 points or pawns
the Bishop is worth 5 points / pawns
Knights and Rooks are worth 3 points / pawn
and the Pawn is worth 1 point.
The king has no points value because if you lose your king you lose the game.
Note that some people refer to points as pawns and vice versa.
In this game of chess you are awarded extra points for various things and they are as follows:
Exchange value = 32 points Value for exchanging pieces when ahead (not pawns)
Not Moving a Pawn = -2 points Penalty for moving pawn
Blocking you own Bishop(s) = -20 points Penalty for bishop blocking d2/e2 pawn
Rook behind a Passed Pawn = 16 points Bonus for Rook behind passed pawn
There are other points available which are used to help the computer decide how it is doing, what options it has, what level to change to (if it is getting a beating) and whether to resign, offer a draw or a stale Mate, or if you are really good commit suciude.
