- Ghost Explorer. The following topics are discussed:
-
- 1. Overview
- 2. What's new in this release
- 3. Installation notes
- 4. Installation layout and contents
- 5. Electronic Documentation included with Ghost
- 6. Ghost Explorer system requirements
- 7. Technical Support
-
- ======================================================================
- 1. Overview
- ======================================================================
- Ghost Explorer is a Windows 95 and NT program, looking similar to Windows
- Explorer, which can open a GHOST image file and restore individual files
- or entire directory structures from it. It can also launch GHOST in batch
- mode to create an image file, using Windows dialog boxes to prompt for the
- disk and partition to dump.
-
- GHOST version 4.0a, and beyond, creates an index for FAT partitions in the
- image file as it works which allows Ghost Explorer to create a display of
- files very quickly. Image files created by earlier versions of GHOST can
- still be viewed with Ghost Explorer, but there is a possibly lengthy delay
- while Ghost Explorer reads through the image file to build an index. A future
- version of Ghost will create an index for NTFS partitions as well. Ghost
- Explorer creates external index files for NTFS partitions the first time
- it reads the image file.
-
- Ghost Explorer Abilities:
- - View any image file created by Ghost v3 or later.
- Only FAT and NTFS partitions will show files.
- - View GHOST v4.0 and above image files quickly. Previous GHOST image
- files are very slow.
- - Restore either whole directory structures or individual files.
- - Select several files at once.
- - Sort your view. In details view, click on a column heading to sort
- by that column. Click again to reverse the sort.
- - A GHOST image file can be dropped on Ghost Explorer for display.
-

- 2. What's new in this release
- ======================================================================
-
- 1. Support added for first FAT partition in an image with no partition
- index. This applies to image files made with Ghost 4.1b.
-
- 2. Handle files made with -IA (Image All) switch gracefully. We cannot
- manipulate these files.
-
- 3. A menu now pops up when a file is right clicked in the File pane.
-
- 4. Files can be launched using the Windows application registered for
- the file type from within Ghost Explorer by double-clicking
- them. A stand alone executable file within an image file may be run
- only when it does not require access to any other files inside the
- image file to run successfully.
-
- 5. Support for deleting files (but not directories) within FAT images
- added. It will only work with image files created with Ghost 5.1c
- or above.
-
- 6. Support for spanned image files. Use -split if Explorer reports
- EOF errors. This is necessary on files created with Ghost 4.1b.
-
- 7. Unknown MFT record error fixed (NTFS partitions)
-
- 8. Report on any problems (e.g. disk full) when restoring files
-
- 9. Fixed the restoration of an entire partition. The directory is
- now not made system/hidden.
-
- 10. Display double-byte filenames correctly (on a machine with suitable
- fonts). This requires the image to have been made by Ghost 5.1c or
- later. The switch -ignoreindex can be used for earlier image files.
-
- 11. A problem with non-resident attributes on NTFS partitions fixed.
-
