Welcome to the Apple Reference and Presentations Library (or ARPL). ARPL takes advantage of the latest Macintosh technology to improve the way we deliver information to the field. The interface is designed to let you find, preview, and copy information from the CD quickly, without sub-launching applications. If you used the Finder in the past rather than the navigation system, make sure you give the new system a try.
Four significant features of ARPL are:
1. The standardization of information delivery - check out the Info Center, in particular the “Briefs” section.
2. Presentation Maker - use this feature to mix and match from all the slides available on ARPL to create your own customized presentations that includes text overlays, transition effects, QuickTime movies, and art to any slide you designate.
3. Smart Search - check out the “Search a Topic” feature in the Info Center. It allows you to find materials based on topics you choose, and then to customize the search based on YOU and your customer. This is particularly useful when preparing for sales calls - ARPL will recommend the materials that are pertinent to that specific call.
4. Agent Help - a QuickTime guide is available to help you through the system. To use the guide, click the “Guide On” button which is available on all screens.
Please be sure to register when you first run ARPL and take a moment to use the “Feedback” feature. It provides us with feedback on how you like ARPL and how we can improve it. This system will evolve and be refined over the next several versions. We need your input to make the system work for you.
Be sure to remove all previous versions of ARPL software from your hard drive. All the new software you need is contained on this CD.
Presentation Maker
Presentation Maker is a presentation editor that lets you mix and match slides from any of the presentations on the ARPL CD. You cannot change the actual slides (use Persuasion if you want to customize at that level), but you can add titles, import PICTs and overlay QuickTime movies. Presentation Maker gives you a fast and easy way to cruise through all of the presentations, find the slides you want and rebuild them into a new presentation.
To start, go to Presentation Maker from the Main Menu. Click the “Guide On” button for a detailed explanation of how to use the Presentation Maker.
It is important to note that once you use Presentation Maker, you will no longer use Persuasion to create your presentation. Instead you will use a custom application called Slide Sorter. This application will let you sequence your slides, add transitions and run your presentation. If you like, Presentation Maker will copy all of the slides and movies you need from the CD into a folder on your hard drive.
When you run your presentation using Slide Sorter and you are not using the CD, you will need to take with you the Slide Sorter presentation folder (containing the Slide Sorter document, slides and movies) and the Slide Sorter application.
The Getting Started folder
This folder has been created to help you easily and effectively access the information on the Apple Reference & Presentations Library CD.
The “Getting Started” folder contains the following folders:
Fonts: This folder contains all fonts which are required to view and print all information found on ARPL. Open the Fonts folder in the Getting Started folder, and drag the contents into your System folder. This will place all the necessary fonts for working with ARPL into your system Font folder. Fonts included are:
- AppleGaramond
- Bookman
- Garamond Narrow
- Helvetica
- Helvetica (bold)
- Helvetica Black
- Helvetica Compressed
- Helvetica Condensed Fonts
- MerrionSquare Font (ARPL Internal version only)
- N Helvetica Narrow
- New Century Schlbk
CD-ROM Setup 4.01: To access your CD-ROM drive, the CD-ROM software must be installed on the startup drive. This folder contains the latest version of this software and instructions on how to use it.
HyperCard 2.1: The ARPL CD front-end stack has been created in HyperCard 2.1. If you do not have HyperCard 2.1 already, follow the steps below:
1) Double click on the file “HyperCard 2.1.sea”
2) A dialog box will appear asking you which drive you want to save the self-extracting HyperCard 2.1 file to
3) Select the drive and click OK
If you already own HyperCard 2.1, make sure to set the memory partition to at least 2600K. You can change the memory partition by selecting HyperCard's icon in the Finder, and choosing 'Get Info' from the File menu. The Preferred Size should be set to at least 2600K.
QuickTime: ARPL requires that you be running QuickTime version 1.5. If you do not already have QuickTime or the latest version, you will need to drag this icon into your System Folder. Please search for and remove QuickTime 1.0 from your boot volume to ensure proper ARPL functionality.
