  1. TechPhonetic was designed by Rob Kassel at the MIT Spoken Language
  2. Systems Group.  It is based on GoudyOldStyle from Altsys.  It is
  3. freely distributable but not public domain.

  5. Kerning
  6. -------

  8. If you're using the kerning (specified in the AFM file) you may be
  9. surprised.  There is a substantial amount of kerning that falls in the
  10. following classes:
  11.  
  12. 1) Superscripts for on- and off-glides are designed to kern with
  13.    adjoining characters.  If you want to disable this kerning insert a
  14.    non-breaking space character (202).  A singlenon-breaking space
  15.    adds no horizontal space per se.
  16.  
  17. 2) Diacritics meant to be centered over/under symbols will
  18.    automatically center via kerning.  Again, non-breaking space
  19.    characters can be inserted to disable this.  After such centering,
  20.    you'll need to insert enough non-breaking spaces to space over to
  21.    where the main character left off.  You'll have to look at the
  22.    width differences (always a multiple of ten milli-ems) and divide
  23.    by the width of the non-breaking space (five milli-ems) and further
  24.    divide by two.  In addition, diacritics will center with other
  25.    diacritics.
