  3. We at Altsys are proud to announce the availability of Fontographer 3.2, the
  4. first Macintosh PostScript font program that can produce fonts for the ATM
  5. (Adobe Type Manager) Windows environment on MS-DOS computers.

  7. Accompanying this README.TXT file is the Architect font. Here is what
  8. Hank Gillette (the font's developer) says about Architect:

  13. Architect is a font that I whipped out one weekend (version 1.0). It
  14. simulates hand printing of the type typically done by architects. It
  15. was inspired by Adobe's font Tekton. It has a full set of letters,
  16. numbers, and punctuation, and quite a few extra characters. I am
  17. interested in comments about this font. You may contact me at my

  24. Architect is free. If you send me money anyway, I won't give it back.
  25. If enough people send money, I'll probably go out and buy a copy of the
  26. real Tekton. (I don't think I have to worry about that.)  You may freely
  27. give away this font to your friends or upload it to your favorite
  28. bulletin board. Please keep this text file with it if you do distribute
  29. it. If you wish to get a copy directly me from me, please send a disk
  30. and a stamped, self-addressed mailer. If you are a commercial
  31. enterprise selling disks of shareware and freeware, you may not
  32. distribute this font without my permission. If you sell it, you should
  33. send the money to me.

  35. Architect was generated with Fontographer 3.2. and is offered as is. To the
  36. best of my knowledge, it will work with any PostScript printer that can
  37. understand the Type 1 font format. Because it is a type 1 font it will work
  38. with Adobe Type Manager. I will not accept responsibility if it doesn't
  39. work for you or if you use it in an important report and your boss hates it
  40. and fires you. So, beware!

  58. Architect is fully compatible with ATM for Windows, allowing it to be seen
  59. on screen at any size, and print to any printer that has a Windows driver.

  61. INSTALLING THE ARCHITECT FONT:
  62.  
  63. 1. Copy the ARCHI___.PFB file to your \PSFONTS directory.
  64.  
  65. 2. Copy the ARCHI___.PFM file to your \PSFONTS\PFM directory. (You can ignore
  66. the .AFM file since it is not useful with Windows. It may be useful to people
  67. running GEM applications, however.)

  69. 3. Open the ATM Control Panel and "Add..." Architect to your list of ATM
  70. fonts. You will have to open the \PSFONTS\PFM directory to allow ATM to see
  71. your Architect font.
  72.  
  73. 4. If you have a PostScript printer, the following will be necessary. If your
  74. printer does not have PostScript, ignore this step. Open your WIN.INI file
  75. with the Windows Notepad program.  (Do you have a backup of it? If not, make
  76. one now.) At the end of the "softfonts" list, you will see something like:

  80. You'll need to change this to:
  81.  
  82. softfonts5=c:\psfonts\pfm\ARCHI___.PFM,c:\psfonts\ARCHI___.PFB

  84. Doing this allows the Windows PostScript driver to find your .PFB file and
  85. download it to your PostScript printer. DO NOT use a semicolon between the two
  86. entries or you will cause some rather unpleasant problems.

  88. You should now exit Windows and restart. Architect will now show up in
  89. your Windows programs' font menus and you'll be able to choose it and use it
  90. like any other font. ATM will allow you to see the font in all sizes and print
  91. it smoothly at all sizes.

  93. INFORMATION ABOUT FONTOGRAPHER 3.2:
  94.  
  95. Fontographer 3.2 runs only on Macintosh computers. It runs on the $999.00
  96. Macintosh Classic which has a 1.44Mb FDHD Superdrive capable of formatting and
  97. writing a PC 3-1/2" diskette. Fontographer 3.2 retails for $495.00 and is
  98. available from all reputable dealers of Macintosh software. To make fonts for
  99. Windows with ATM from Fontographer 3.2 you can do the following:

  101. 1. Draw the font or autotrace it from scanned images pasted into Fontographer
  102. 3.2's Edit window. If you have already made Fontographer fonts, you can use
  103. the "Open font..." dialog from the File menu to open the font and allow its
  104. conversion to PC format. If you have PC PostScript fonts you wish to modify,
  105. you can download them to any Adobe PostScript printer that can simultaneously
  106. communicate with both Macintoshes and PC's, then use Altsys' Metamorphosis
  107. (retail $149.00) to convert the fonts to Fontographer format on the Macintosh.

  109. 2. Select all the characters in the font and use the Path menu's "Correct path
  110. direction" item to make sure that the path directions in the font are correct.
  111.  
  112. 3. While all the characters are still selected, use the Edit menu's "Char
  113. info..." item to make sure that all the characters in the font are filled with
  114. "Normal" fill and a "Tint" of 100% (DO NOT check the "Stroke" checkbox, since
  115. Adobe rules do not allow stroked characters in Type 1 fonts).

  117. 4. Use the Edit menu's "Font attributes..." dialog to turn on the "Automatic
  118. PostScript and bitmap hints," "Generate Type 1 fonts," and "Adobe standard
  119. character encoding" checkboxes. Do not turn on the "Use Flex feature if
  120. possible" checkbox unless you are absolutely certain that your font can
  121. benefit from Flex.

  123. 5. Use the File menu's "Generate fonts..." dialog and choose the
  124. "PostScript-PC" item from the "Outline format:" popup menu. To save time, you
  125. can choose the "None" item from the "Bitmap format:" popup menu, since you
  126. will not need to generate any kind of bitmap file. OK this dialog and the
  127. result will be the .AFM, .PFB, and .PFM files described above. They can be
  128. installed using the above instructions.
