  5. This "Read_Me" file contains additional information and
  6. helpful hints that are not included in the manual.

  17. High Performance Disk Operation
  18. -------------------------------
  19. Included with Studio 16 3.0 is the "BigBlocks" utility which
  20. can be used to vastly improve your disk performance.  This
  21. utility and others are automatically installed into your
  22. Studio 16 "Extras" drawer by the installation procedure.
  23.  
  24. We strongly recommend that you use the BigBlocks utility on
  25. all of the partitions you will be using for digital audio.
  26.  
  27. BigBlocks greatly reduces disk seek times by increasing the
  28. partition's logical block size.  This will allow you to
  29. play more tracks and reduce or eliminate the delays when
  30. playing ranges in the Editor or regions in the CueList.
  31. Once again, we strongly recommend that you use BigBlocks
  32. on your audio partitions.
  33.  
  34. BigBlocks will automatically re-format each partition that
  35. is modified.  If you already have data on your digital audio
  36. partitions and you want to keep it, then you MUST backup those
  37. partitions before using the BigBlocks utility.
  38.  
  39. Using BigBlocks
  40. ---------------
  41.  1. Determine which partitions will be used for digital audio.
  42.  
  43.  2. Make a backup of those partitions.
  44.  
  45.  3. Double-click the BigBlocks icon in the Studio 16 "Extras" drawer.
  46.  
  47.  4. A window will appear containing a list of partitions.
  48.     Select the digital audio partitions from the list of
  49.     partitions, then select the "Make Big Blocks" button.
  50.  
  51.  5. A message will appear asking you to confirm the operation.
  52.     If you have changed your mind and wish to abort the operation,
  53.     select "No, Cancel" now; otherwise, select "Yes, Continue."
  54.  
  55.  6. A second message will appear warning you that any data
  56.     stored on the selected partitions will be lost.  If you
  57.     have not backed up these partitions, select "Cancel" now
  58.     and go and back them up.  Otherwise, select "Format Partition(s)"
  59.     to perform the BigBlocks operation.
  60.  
  61.  7. BigBlocks will modify the partitions you have selected
  62.     to use a logical block size of 8192 bytes and then
  63.     re-format each partition.
  64.  
  65.  8. When the BigBlocks operation has completed, a message will
  66.     appear asking you to finish all disk activity and reboot
  67.     your system.  Select "Reboot" to reset your computer.

  71. Studio 16 2.0 / 3.0 Compatability
  72. ---------------------------------
  73. If you have Studio 16 2.0 already installed on your system,
  74. you will be able to run either version 2.0 or 3.0 without
  75. having to do anything special.  You will, of course, only
  76. be able to run one version at a time.
  77.  
  78. If you are using third party software that interfaces to
  79. Studio 16, you may wish to contact the makers of the
  80. software regarding compatability with Studio 16 3.0.
  81. Not all third party programs currently work with 3.0.
  82.  
  83. Due to the number of enhancements made in Studio 16 3.0,
  84. you may notice a decrease in the number of tracks you are
  85. able to play back simultaneously.  This performance penalty
  86. is balanced out by the increase in performance due to the
  87. changes made by the BigBlocks utility.

  91. Extra Utilities
  92. ---------------
  93. Included with Studio 16 are several utility programs that
  94. you may find useful.  These utilities are automatically
  95. installed in your Studio 16 "Extras" drawer by the
  96. installation procedure.

  98. Contents of the Studio 16 "Extras" drawer:
  99.  
  100.  o DiskSpeed (v4.2) - a utility written by Michael Sinz
  101.    that measures hard disk performance.  See the archive
  102.    file "diskspeed.lha" for documentation and source code.
  103.  
  104.  o BigBlocks (v1.1) - a utility that improves hard disk
  105.    performance by increasing a partition's logical block size.
  106.  
  107. In addition to the files in the Studio 16 "Extras" drawer,
  108. the Studio 16 installation procedure will automatically
  109. update your HDToolBox (v40.4) and FastFileSystem (v40.1)
  110. files if earlier versions are detected.

  114. If You Are Having Problems
  115. --------------------------
  116. We have designed Studio 16 3.0 to be easy to use and
  117. as intuitive as possible.  If you are having a problem
  118. with Studio 16, try these steps before contacting our
  119. technical support staff:
  120.  
  121.  1. Read the parts of the manual relating to the operation
  122.     that you are having a problem with.
  123.  
  124.  2. Read Chapter 7 - Trouble Shooting in the manual.
  125.  
  126.  3. Read Appendix A - Technical Support in the manual.
  127.  
  128. If you are unable to solve the problem, you may contact
  129. our technical support staff at (408) 374-4962.  Most
  130. problems can be resolved quickly if you are prepared when
  131. you call us.  You should be at your computer and have
  132. Studio 16 running when you call.
  133.  
  134. To be assured of technical support, you must be registered.
  135. If you have not registered, please do so now.
  136.  
  137. We will also need to know:
  138.  
  139.  o Your name.
  140.  
  141.  o The model and configuration of your computer system.
  142.    (memory configuration, disk drives, hard disk, etc.)
  143.  
  144.  o The release version number of your copy of Studio 16.
  145.    This information is displayed in the "About" window.
  146.  
  147.  o The version number of the Kickstart and Workbench that
  148.    you are using.  Choose "Version" or "About" from the
  149.    "Workbench" menu on the Workbench screen.

  151.  o The nature of the problem you are having.
  152.  
  153.  o Is the problem repeatable?  If so, how?
  154.  
  155.  o What you have done to resolve the problem.

  161. Finally, a small note about anomalies.  Although we strive
  162. to release bug-free software, an occasional bug may slip by.
