  1. This  disk  contains  Studio  V1.13.  Version numbers shown by the
  2. programs  on this disk may differ and are only updated in case the
  3. program itself was changed.
  4.  
  5. This  file  contain  notes  about  changes made after printing the
  6. manual.   We  also  feel  that  it  is  your  right  to  have  the
  7. information about changes made to previous versions:
  8.

  10.  
  11. LaserDriver now supports controlling various non permanent printer
  12. settings using PJL:
  13.  
  14. "Job Timeout" Duration of printer I/O timeout in seconds.  If the
  15.               printer waits longer than the timeout value without
  16.               receiving any data, it ends the print job and begins
  17.               accepting data rfom other I/O ports, if any.
  18.               Do not confuse "Job Timeout" with the driver timeout
  19.               setting available in the main window of LaserPref!
  20.  
  21. "Resolution"  Sets the printers max resolution (not driver resolution!)
  22.               Allways set "Resolution" to 600 for 600 dpi printers.
  23.               Setting "Max.Res." to 600 dpi without setting the
  24.               printer to 600 dpi (via "Resolution" of printer panel) 
  25.               does not work!
  26.  
  27. "RET"         Configuration of the Resolution Enhancement hardware.
  28.               Resolution Enhancement technology (RET) improves the
  29.               print quality of characters and graphics by smoothing
  30.               the edges of lines.
  31.  
  32. "Protect"     The page protection feature reserves a block of printer
  33.               memory to prevent printer overrun errors (error 21)
  34.               when printing very dense or complex images.  This
  35.               variable can be set to any legal value at any time,
  36.               regardless of the current amount of free printer memory
  37.               or the current set resolution.  When a job is sent,
  38.               if there is not enough memory to print correctly with
  39.               the current resolution and page protection configuration,
  40.               the printer temporarily overrides the resolution and/or page
  41.               protect values to run the job.  In these cases, the job
  42.               may be printed at 300 dpi (on 600 dpi printers) and
  43.               without page protection.  When the page protection status
  44.               is changed, printer memory is reconfigured and all used
  45.               defined downloaded fonts, PCL macros, and PostScript
  46.               dictionaries are lost (however, no I/O data is lost).
  47.  
  48. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  49.  
  50. Beside LaserPref, a program named "SetupPJL" gets installed for
  51. Laserjet 4L/4/4M/4SI/4MX users.
  52.  
  53. SetupPJL makes use of Hewlett-Packard's "Printer Job Language" for
  54. controlling  printer  settings.   This  program  is usefull to all
  55. Laserjet 4 series printers.  For Laserjet 4L users this program is
  56. the only way for controlling the printer NVRAM settings that can't
  57. be accessed through the printers front panel.
  58.  
  59. Like all the other Studio programs, SetupPJL can be redirected to
  60. public screens using the PUBSCREEN option. Also, SetupPJL supports
  61. the TOPAZ argument.
  62.  
  63. Because  the  normal  Amiga port doesn't allow reading the printer
  64. settings,  SetupPJL also saves the settings sent to the printer in
  65. a  file  ("SetupPJL.prefs" in the drawer of the SetupPJL program).
  66. Next  time  you  start  SetupPJL, the current printer settings are
  67. shown thanks to the file saved.  This method only works as long as
  68. SetupPJL is used for all printer setting changes.
  69.  
  70. Not  all  settings  shown  in the main window are supported by one
  71. printer.   For  instance,  Economy and Imageadapt are supported by
  72. the Laserjet 4L but not 4 or 4M.  Unsupported settings are ignored
  73. by the printer.
  74.  
  75. Economy: This mode reduce the amount of toner placed on the page.
  76.          Supported by 4L.
  77.  
  78. Imageadapt:  Default for Image Adapt.  This algorithem will
  79.          possibly cause a Lossy compression (as worse case) to be
  80.          used on the page. ON causes the Lossy compression
  81.          to be used on any images that need to have compression
  82.          performed.  AUTO causes the printer to evaluate other
  83.          compression alternatives first before Lossy is considered.
  84.          OFF causes no use of the Lossy compression (but memory outs
  85.          may occur).
  86.  
  87. RET:     Default for Resolution Enhancement. Resolution Enhancement
  88.          Technology (RET) improves the print quality of characters
  89.          and graphics by smoothing the edges of lines.
  90.  
  91. Symbol:  This sets the default symbol set. Note that setting this
  92.          variabe can have an effect on the font used.
  93.  
  94. Copies:  Default for the number of copies of each page. If the
  95.          value is outside of the range (1-999), it is snapped to
  96.          the closer limit.
  97.  
  98. Formlines: Default number of lines per page.  If the
  99.          value is outside of the range (5-128), it is snapped to
  100.          the closer limit.
  101.  
  102. Paper:   Default paper size.
  103.  
  104. Orientation: Default page orientation.
  105.  
  106. Pageprotect:  Default for page protection.  The Laserjet 4
  107.          supports various paper size for page protection to
  108.          prevent.  The Laserjet 4L uses a slightly different
  109.          algorithem for page protection.  AUTO causes the printer
  110.          to make an educated guess as to whether protection is
  111.          needed, and ON causes the printer to automaticly perform
  112.          page protection.
  113.  
  114. Autocont:  Default for auto-continue.  This causes the printer to
  115.          automaticly continue from certain errors after 10 seconds
  116.          has expired with no further errors.
  117.  
  118. ManualFeed: Default for Manual Feed.
  119.  
  120. Density: Default for Line Density.  Values rage from 1 to 5, and
  121.          allows adjustment to alter the apparent quality of the print.
  122.  
  123. Resol.:  Printer engine resolution (300 or 600 dpi). Use "n.d." for not
  124.          setting a resolution.
  125.  
  126. Personality:  Personality for implicit switching (implicit
  127.          switching refers to switching to the default personality
  128.          without explicitly doing so with PJL).  If the AUTO
  129.          option is selected, and a job is sent without a PJL
  130.          command, the printer looks for context clues to determine
  131.          wich personality takes effect.
  132.  
  133. Time:    Duration of I/O timeouts in seconds. If the printer waits
  134.          longer than the timeout value without receiving any data,
  135.          it ends the print job and begins accepting data from
  136.          other I/O ports, if any.
  137.  
  138. WARNING:   Changing  printer  permanent  parameters  using PJL may
  139. cause major problems in case the printer is used in a network from
  140. various  people.   SetupPJL  should  only  be  used  by the system
  141. administrator in networks!
  142.

  146. For Panasonic 24 pin users a new SetupKXP program gets installed.
  147. This  program  may  be  used by KX-P2023 users for controlling the
  148. printer  settings.  The use of this program is very similar to the
  149. MS-DOS or Windows program described in the printer manual.
  150.  
  151. For use with the Studio Workbench driver set the printers
  152. parameter to (this is the factory setting for printers sold in the
  153. USA!):

  161. PCL 5C setting added to DeskDriver4C, making the driver PCL 5C

  203. Printing using the new Ricoh LP1200 Layout Language support:
  204.  
  205. - set Max.Res. in LaserPref to 400 dpi.
  206. - set Language in LaserPref to Ricoh Layout.
  207.  
  208. This allows you to print 400 dpi on Ricoh LP1200 printers.  It is
  209. a requirement of "Layout" to print 400 dpi in all density
  210. settings.  To print with less than 400 dpi simply set Max.Res back
  211. to 300 dpi.

  215. Some information was missing from the "Maximum printing area"
  216. description in the "Tips&Trick" chapter of some manuals.  "Top
  217. Margin" must be set to zero for the example. LaserDriver users
  218. should use the new Wide/Narrow-tractor feature mentioned below.
  219.  
  220. So here you get the full example:
  221.  
  222. * Set your printers dip switches to DIN A4.
  223.  
  224. * Select the CUSTOM paper format in the Workbench preferences
  225.   program.  Studio drivers allow you to define a paper format for
  226.   graphics using the Custom ResX and Custom ResY parameters if
  227.   CUSTOM is selected.
  228.  
  229. * Set "Paper Length" to 68 lines in Workbench preferences.  The
  230.   Workbench manuals and preferences programs use the definition
  231.   "Page Length", where "Text Length" should be used.  Text length is
  232.   defined as the page length minus the top and bottom margins.
  233.  
  234. * Start the DeskPref program and click on the "Page Size
  235.   Control..." button.  A window should appear with more page size
  236.   parameters.
  237.  
  238. * Set "Custom ResX" to 2400 dots (20.32cm) and "Custom ResY" to
  239.   3357 dots (28.42cm).  In case you you also print using color mode,
  240.   set "Custom ResY" to 3307 dots.  The Deskjet 550C allows 3319
  241.   lines coloured graphics.
  242.  
  243. * Set "Paper Length" (this time "Paper Length" is meant as page
  244.   size with top and bottom margin) to 71 lines.
  245.  
  246. * Set "Top Margin" to 0 lines.
  247.  
  248. * Disable "Perforation Skip". In case of unwanted formfeeds during
  249.   text prints enable perforation skip (this shouldn't happen on
  250.   US-Letter paper... but sometimes does happen on A4 paper size).

  254. Different to the original DJ550C PageStream driver, the Studio
  255. DeskJet4C PageStream driver uses a fast compression scheme (Mode
  256. 023) and allows full control over depletion, shingling, paper
  257. type,  print quality and paper size using the PageStream "Special"
  258. gadget in the printer requester.  Also, using the pcl5 option, you
  259. can make the driver working with Deskjet 1200 and Paintjet 300XL
  260. printers.
  261.  
  262. Here are the supported commands (case-sensitive!) wich may be
  263. combined using a '+' character:
  264.  
  265. pcl5         - use for PCL 5C compatible printers, that are
  266.                not compatible with the Deskjet 550C:
  267.                Deskjet 1200 and Paintjet 300XL.
  268.  
  269. letter       - use US-Letter paper
  270. legal        - use US-Legal paper
  271. a4           - use DIN A4 paper
  272. a3           - use DIN A3 paper (for PaintJet 300XL)
  273. ledger       - use Ledger paper (for PaintJet 300XL)
  274. 10envelope   - use #10 envelope
  275. dlenvelope   - use DL envelope
  276. c5envelope   - use C5 envelope (for Deskjet 1200C)
  277.  
  278. The following settings are not supported by the Deskjet 1200C and
  279. Paintjet 300XL:
  280.  
  281. shingl=0     - use 0%  shingling
  282. shingl=25    - use 25% shingling
  283. shingl=50    - use 50% shingling
  284.

  286. depl=0       - use 0%  depletion
  287. depl=25      - use 25% depletion
  288. depl=50      - use 50% depletion
  289.  
  290. deplg=25     - use 25% depletion with gamma function
  291. deplg=50     - use 50% depletion with gamma function
  292.  
  293. normal       - use normal graphic print quality
  294. high         - use high quality graphic print mode
  295.  
  296. The following settings are only supported by the Deskjet 1200C and
  297. Paintjet 300XL
  298.  
  299. special      - use special paper type print mode
  300. plain        - use plain paper type print mode
  301. glossy       - use glossy film paper type print mode
  302. trans        - use transparency film paper type print mode
  303.  
  304. For  instance, for printing on DIN A4 paper with 25% shingling,
  305. 25% depletion, and gamma function, set the PageStream Special
  306. gadget to:
  307.  
  308.               "a4+shingl=25+depl=25"
  309.  
  310. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  311.  
  312. Dry Hold Time:
  313.  
  314. When a page is ejected from the printer, the ink on the page may
  315. not yet be completely dry. The time a printed page takes to dry
  316. can depend on the density of ink placed on the print media, and
  317. environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. The
  318. "Dry Hold" integer gadget can be used to allow a minimum drying
  319. time before a page is dropped onto any preceding pages in the
  320. printer output tray.  "Dry Hold" (or the StudioDry environment
  321. var) doesn't specify an absolute length of time a page is held in
  322. the drying rack before it is dropped into the output tray, rather
  323. the time it takes to print is subtracted from the specified dry
  324. time. The resulting value is the length of time the page is held
  325. (if at all) in the printer's drying rack.
  326.  
  327. Default value 0:
  328.  
  329. - 15 seconds for letter quality printing.
  330. - 10 seconds for draft quality printing.
  331.  
  332. If the printer's input buffer becomes nearly full while in "Dry
  333. Hold"-Mode, the printer will enter a special mode, where the data
  334. is accepted one byte per second. This is done to ensure data bytes
  335. are received the entire time the printer is in Dry Hold Mode, so
  336. the printer device performing the printing doesn't erreously
  337. detect a printer time out.
  338.  
  339. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  340.  
  341. In  case Narrow- or Wide-Tractor paper size is set in preferences,
  342. you  can  print  graphics  using  your  max.   DIN  A4 (Narrow) or
  343. US-Letter  (Wide)  printing  area.  Note:  this mode does NOT work
  344. with text.  You will loose you first text line on each page!  This
  345. mode is only intended for all those DTP/Graphics freaks out there.
  346. Also, on some printers the printer may stay active after printing,
  347. indicating  a  page  is still printing.  You can ignore this or in
  348. case  of  trouble  on  a  network  printer,  use the Custom-ResX/Y
  349. options (wich gives you a ~30 dots less height print area).
  350.  
  351. DeskDriver4C now supports two new paper sizes using the Narrow-
  352. and Wide-Tractor Preferences setting:
  353.  
  354.                   Narrow-Tractor = Ledger
  355.                   Wide-Tractor   = A3
  356.  
  357. These new paper sizes can be used on Paintjet 300XL printers.
  358.  
  359. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  360.  
  361. Use the new "PPage Off" setting in LaserPref to get rid of the
  362. annoying Professional Page (PPage) and Professional Draw (PDraw)
  363. offset.  A "Top Margin" of 0 is automaticly set be this mode.
  364.  
  365. Note:  you MUST use the Wide-Tractor (US-Letter) or Narrow-Tractor
  366. (DIN A4) preference paper size for this mode to get active.
  367. Otherwise only PJL is used for "PJL & PPage".
  368.  
  369. WARNING:  Do not print text in the PPage Language mode or you will
  370. loose the two top lines of text on each page.  Also, do not use
  371. these modi for other programs than PPage and PDraw!
  372.  
  373. In case you want to print normal text, simply switch back to DIN
  374. A4 or US-Letter paper size in preferences.
