- BERETTA 92F
-
- This is the gun that finally
- booted the king of the hill (the
- Colt .45 Auto) from its lofty
- perch as the septugenarian
- choice of U.S. Armed Forces.
- Don't let that name "Beretta
- U.S.A." fool you - this pistol
- is as Italian as spaghetti and
- marinara sauce. It's a direct
- descendent of the Beretta M951,
- which is similar externally to
- the current issue 92F except for
- the newer gun's double action
- trigger and wider grip frame.
- This wide frame accommodates the
- staggered-column, 15-round
- magazine that offers "increased
- firepower" over the old Colt's
- capacity of 7 + 1 (though many
- would argue that this "increase"
- is illusory, since it may
- require two or more hits with
- 9mm slugs to achieve the same
- effect as a single punch from
- the .45). In any case, the NATO
- allies should be happy, since
- all members will now be armed
- with handguns chambering the
- same ammunition.
-
- Sour grapes aside, the
- Beretta has proven itself as a
- reliable and robust design
- capable of carrying out its
- assigned task - up to a point.
