- New Features
- ------------
-
- Release 1.0 of Professional Draw incorporates several new features which
- were added after the printing of the manual.
-
- 1) Some of the default parameters of the program can now be set on boot-up
- by setting the TOOLTYPES of the PDraw WorkBench icon. To change these
- settings single click on the PDraw icon and select 'Info' from the
- 'Workbench' menu. You may add items to the TOOLTYPES by clicking on the
- 'ADD' button and typing one of the commands listed below into the
- TOOLTYPES string gadget. The supported options are:
-
- a) Screen Type:
-
- SCREEN=WORKBENCH - Opens Professional Draw on the Workbench Screen.
- Since the Workbench Screen allows only 4 colors
- Professional Draw will operate in its Black
- and White mode.
- SCREEN=CUSTOM - Opens Professional Draw in its own Screen. On
- this screen Professional Draw can be run in Black
- and White or Color mode by entering one of the
- following options:
-
- COLORMODE=COLOR
- COLORMODE=BW
-
- In addition you may choose to operate
- Professional Draw in either interlaced (400
- vertical lines of resolution) or non-interlaced
- (200 lines) mode by entering one of the
- following options:
-
- INTERLACE=ON
- INTERLACE=OFF
-
- b) Measurement Units:
-
- You may change the internal measurement units used by Professional
- Draw by entering one of the following options:
-
- UNITS=INCH
- UNITS=CM
- UNITS=PICA
-
- c) Default Page Format:
-
- The Default Page format may be set by choosing one of the following
- options:
-
- DEFAULTPAGE=STANDARD
- DEFAULTPAGE=LEGAL
- DEFAULTPAGE=A3
- DEFAULTPAGE=A4
- DEFAULTPAGE=A5
- DEFAULTPAGE=B5
-
- When you run Professional Draw from the Workbench by clicking on its
- icon it will now start with the default options you have chosen in the
- TOOLTYPES. If you omit any of these TOOLTYPES the default settings are:
-
- SCREEN=CUSTOM
- INTERLACE=ON
- COLORMODE=COLOR
- UNITS=INCH
- DEFAULTPAGE=STANDARD
-
- Be sure to to click on the 'SAVE' button to save these settings once you
- are satisfied with them.
-
- 2) These options can also be set when you start Professional Draw from the
- CLI. To set the options type:
-
- 1> RUN PDraw:PDraw [-w1nmpl345b] [folio_file]
-
- You may use any or none of the options but any option must be preceeded
- by a dash (-). The meaning of the options is as follows:
-
- w - Run Professional Draw on the WorkBench Screen.
- 1 - Use a single plane screen.
- n - use a non-interlaced screen.
- m - set default units to metric (CM).
- p - set default units to Picas.
- l - set default page size to US Legal.
- 3 - set defualt page size to A3.
- 4 - set defualt page size to A4.
- 5 - set defualt page size to A5.
- b - set default page size to B5.
-
- If multiple options affect the same parameter the last one will be used.
-
- When Professional Draw is run on the Workbench screen it will open a
- Window to the full size of the Workbench screen. If you have set the
- Workbench to operate in the INTERLACE mode (through Preferences),
- Professional Draw will also operate in interlace mode. Professional Draw
- will therefore automatically support any enhancements to the Amiga
- video hardware and software such as the Moniterm and A2024 full page
- monitors. The Professional Draw Workbench window is fully sizeable,
- however if you make it too small some of the gadgets along the right
- hand side may not be visible. The program is still fully functional and
- you may regain use of the invisible gadgets by making the window taller.
-
-
- 3) Color PostScript Support.
- Professional Draw will output in Color PostScript for those printers
- which support it (such as the QMS ColorScript 100 thermal printer). To
- get output in Color PostScript simply select the `Color PostScript'
- button in the `Print to PostScript' requester. You may still enter
- values for the screen angles and densities for the Cyan, Magenta,
- Yellow, and Black components.
-
- 4) EPSF output.
- Professional Draw will generate an EPSF formatted PostScript file simply
- by selecting the `EPSF' button in the `Print to PostScript' requester.
- EPSF allows you to import Professional Draw pages into programs which
- support EPSF files (such as PageMaker on the Macintosh or the IBM PC).
-
- 5) Professional Draw now has built in context sensitive help. At almost
- any stage you can hit the `HELP' key and get a useful help message
- containing information on the current function.
-
- 6) Screen refresh abort.
- In a complicated drawing it may take many seconds for Professional Draw
- to refresh the screen (especially if it is in WYSIWYG mode). Any screen
- refresh can be aborted by hitting the `F10' key or by selecting any menu
- or clicking on any gadget. If you later want to refresh the screen
- completely, simply hit `SPACE'.
-
- 7) New Keyboard modifiers.
- a) If you hold the ALT key while moving an object the movement will be
- restricted to 45° directions from the object's original position.
- b) In the `Distort' operation holding the CONTROL key will force the
- distortion region to be horizontally symmetrical. Similarly, holding
- the ALT key will force the distortion region to be vertically
- symmetrical.
-
- 8) Double clicking on the NULL gadget will allow you to enter numerical
- values for the upper left corner of the selected objects. This allows
- you to move objects very precisely.
-
- 9) Sort option in the File Requester.
- A `Sort' button has been added to the File requester to sort the names
- in the list window. If the File requester is still in the process of
- reading files from disk it will sort those files it has already read and
- add any new ones to the end. The list can, of course, be sorted again
- later when all files have been read.
-
- 10) New options in Text Requester.
- a) The Text requester now allows you to use slanted (pseudo-italic)
- text. If you wish your text to be slanted simply click the "Slant"
- button on and click in the "Angle" string gadget to change the slant
- angle.
- b) Since fonts can use up a lot of memory you now have the option of
- purging them from the computer's memory. If you hit the "Purge"
- button ALL of the fonts you have loaded will be purged. This will in
- no way affect any text you have drawn on the page, but if you wish to
- use more text Professional Draw will have to re-load the font. This
- option is most effectively used when you have drawn all of the text
- you require, and want to free up memory for other operations.
-
- CHANGES to the manual
- ---------------------
-
- 1) The magnification limit in Professional Draw is limited to 8 times, not
- 16 times as stated on P. 24 of the manual. At 8x magnification each
- pixel represents 1/600 inch on the output page (if the page is not
- scaled).
-
- 2) On P. 32 of the manual line 12 should read:
- `* Make sure that WYSIWYG mode is on.'
-
- 3) the arrow keys will scroll the page by 1/5 of a screen height or width
- (4/5 with SHIFT) not 75 pixels as stated on P. 119 of the manual.
-
- 4) A clarification: When you scale an object the line weights will scale
- with the x scale of the object. For example: if you have an object with
- a line that is 4 points thick and you scale the object by 50% in x and
- 75% in y, the resulting line weight will be 2 points thick.
-
- 5) Hint: When importing a Bitmap, if you want it to have the same aspect
- ratio on printout as it has on a normal Amiga Monitor, you will have to
- increase the Bitmap's size, in the `Y' direction only. If the picture
- was created in HiRes or LoRes (640x400 or 320x200), you should increase
- its vertical size by a factor of 1.16. If it was created in Medium Res
- (640x200), its vertical size should be increased by a factor of 2.32.
-
-
- Hard Disk Installation
- ----------------------
-
- A program to install Professional Draw on a Hard Disk is provided on the
- Fonts and Utilities disk. In order to execute it you must bring up the
- Command Line Interface (CLI). The hard disk installation is done by a
- command file called HDINSTALL on the HD directory of the PDRAWFONTS:
- disk. Before installing Professional Draw you should decide where you
- wish to install it. This will normally be on the main hard disk
- partition (SYS:) but you may want it installed on another partition.
- There are no restrictions, but you should make sure that the destination
- partition has at least 1MB (2000 blocks) of free storage available. You
- can see how much free storage is available on all disks by typing:
-
- 1> INFO
-
- Before starting the installation procedure you should remove both the
- PDraw: program disk and the PDrawFonts: disk and type:
-
- 1> ASSIGN PDraw:
- 1> ASSIGN PDrawFonts:
-
- Start the installation procedure by typing:
-
- 1> EXECUTE PDrawFonts:HD/HDinstall [partition]
-
- where [partition] is the name of the hard disk partition onto which you
- wish to install Professional Draw. Do not type a ":" following the disk
- partition name. If you omit this parameter, the program will be
- installed onto SYS:.
-
- As the installation proceeds you will be asked several questions, simply
- type Y or N in response. The installation procedure will ask you if you
- want to install the V1.3 printer drivers and Preferences program onto
- your hard disk system. This is not necessary if you have already
- installed the V1.3 AmigaDOS operating system on your hard disk, but if
- not you must answer `Y' as Professional Draw requires the V1.3 printer
- drivers to output to Dot Matrix (ie. non-PostScript) printers.
-
- After the installation procedure has terminated you must tell
- Professional Draw where to find the information it requires to function
- properly. This is done by defining two system ASSIGN'S. The preferred
- method of doing this is to edit the "startup-sequence" file in the s:
- directory and add the following two lines to the end BEFORE the ENDCLI
- command if it exists:
-
- ASSIGN PDraw: [partition]:PDraw
- ASSIGN PDrawFonts: [partition]:PDrawFonts
-
- where [partition], again, is the name of the partition onto which you
- have just installed Professional Draw. You can use any ASCII text
- editor for this, such as Ed or Edit, both of which are on your WorkBench
- disk. Be careful about word processors, however, since many of them
- save formatting codes in the file and it will be useless.
-
- Alternatively, you could simply type the two ASSIGN commands every time
- you run Professional Draw.
-
- Remove the Two Professional Draw floppy disks from your drive(s) and
- re-boot the system. These floppy disks should not be in the drives when
- starting Professional Draw or rebooting the system.
-
- Using Professional Draw from the Hard Disk:
- From the WorkBench:
- Double click on the PDraw drawer icon.
- Double click on the PDraw program icon to start the program.
-
- From the CLI:
- Start Professional Draw by typing:
- 1> RUN PDraw:PDraw
-
-
- Running Professional Draw in Low Memory situations
- --------------------------------------------------
-
- Professional Draw requires at least 1 MB of memory to run properly and
- will monitor the amount of free memory as you work. If you encounter
- the Low Memory warning at any time there are several things you can do
- to free up more memory.
-
- a) Since the Amiga is a multi-tasking machine, other processes may be
- consuming memory needlessly. You should close all other unnecessary
- windows and programs.
-
- b) The largest amount of memory is used by running Professional Draw in
- Color, Interlace, WYSIWYG mode. If you switch any or all of these
- options off you can save up to 160K Bytes of memory.
-
- c) If you have defined any Clips which you do not intend to use you
- should save them to disk and Delete them from memory (choose the
- Clip/Draw menu item and click the "Delete All" button).
-
- d) Fonts consume a considerable amount of memory. If you have finished
- drawing any text you wish to draw you should delete the fonts from
- memory by selecting the "Purge" button in the Text requester. If you
- want to draw more text later, Professional Draw will have to re-load the
- fonts.
-
- e) If all else fails you should save your folio, and exit the program.
- Restarting Professional Draw will ensure that you have a clean slate to
- work with and as much memory as possible.
-
- Dot Matrix printing with Professional Draw will proceed more quickly
- if there is a lot of free memory. Therefore, it is a good idea to
- perform any or all of the above operations before printing to a Dot
- Matrix printer.
