- HyperBook Samples
-
- October 8/90
-
- The samples on this disk show a number of HyperBook's capabilities.
-
- The most powerful hyperbook applications use ARexx macros, and can be
- found in the "Applications" directory. You will require ARexx to use
- them, of course (if ARexx is not already running, HyperBook will
- attempt to execute "Rexxmast" to start it). The demo applications
- include an address book database, an appointment book, a calculator, a
- dictionary, a calendar, an interactive periodic table of the elements,
- and a user-configurable romantic prose generator. (The dictionary uses
- the font "notebook 9", which is included in the "fonts" directory on the
- HyperBook program disk. If you don't have this font in your fonts
- directory, the default font will be used instead.)
-
- The ARexx functions are documented in an extensive hyperbook called
- "ARexx.hb". Each page explains one of the commands and provides a
- working example (these examples require ARexx in order to function). The
- hyperbook is over 130 pages long. Because the ARexx & HML chapter of
- the manual contains a few errors, the "ARexx.hb" hyperbook is the best
- way to learn about HyperBook ARexx macros.
-
- This hyperbook does an assign when first loaded in order to locate some
- of the extra files it uses. The assign is made to "HB_Samples:hbk",
- which is on this disk. If you move the hyperbook to another disk, copy
- the "hbk" directory as well and click the "HDAT" button on the first
- page of the notebook to reassign "HDAT:". (See the hyperbook's
- "PageEntryMacro".)
-
- Other hyperbooks can be found in the "HBfiles" directory. Of particular
- interest is "Jabberwocky.hb", which hides the title bar and main control
- panel, and changes the system colours to provide the feel of a self-
- contained storybook program (click on the bottom right or left to turn
- the pages). A similar effect is achieved by "Quotations.hb". Simple
- books like these can be run using the "Browser", a small (91k) read-
- only version of HyperBook that doesn't handle ARexx macros like the
- "Reader" does. To restore the normal system colours when using these
- hyperbooks, or any other that modifies them, use the Caps-Lock key.
-
- The "Demo" directory contains the "Demo.hb" hyperbook which is referred
- to in the tutorial sections of the manual.
