- This file describes the images included with World Construction Set.
- All images are copyright 1993-1995 by Questar Productions.
-
- All the images included on the distribution diskette #5 are described here.
- If this is your first exposure to WCS there will probably be a lot of terms
- used here that you are not familiar with. When you want to create similar
- effects you can look here to find out what techniques to use and look in
- the manual to find out all the details of how to use the techniques.
-
- There is a glossary and index in the Operator's Manual to help you zero in
- on the information you need.

-
- ** LongsPeak
-
- This image demonstrates the basic look of a WCS rendering. As you can see
- there is no lack of depth or resolution. Mountains in the far distance are
- about a hundred miles from the Camera.
-
- We made liberal use of haze to add to the illusion of distance.
-
- You can control all the positioning of Ecosystems and the colors of every
- element in the picture. It would be a snap to change this scene to winter
- or late summer just by changing the colors and snow line.
-
- You could simulate more arid terrain by elliminating some of the vegetation.
-
- You could change the amount of relief by altering the Vertical Exaggeration
- or Flattening Motion Parameters.

-
- ** CanyonSunset
-
- This image is of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It shows the effect you can
- get by combining a sun position on the far side of the horizon with a sky
- gradient.

-
- ** Fraser
-
- You can create shaded relief maps by getting rid of all the Ecosystems except
- Bare ground and making its color pure white (or any other color for that
- matter).
-
- Color Maps were used to create the areas of solid color.
-
- Vector objects were used to create the streams and red area outline.
-
- We added the text labels in a paint program.
-

-
- ** LogoGold
-
- Elevation models can be exported to a paint program for "terraforming" as
- was done in this image. We used a white brush of our logo with 50%
- transparency and stamped it on the terrain. The model was then imported back
- into WCS as a DEM file.
-
- We created a Color Map to make the top of the logo stand out in yellow.
-
- The same Color Map also generated the lakes, roads and rivers. We could have
- used Vector Objects to accomplish much the same thing. In fact the Color
- Map was generated from Vector Objects.

-
- ** Misty
-
- In WCS you have extensive control over atmospheric effects. This image
- combines the use of haze (distance related) and fog (elevation related)
- to make it seem like early morning in the mountains.
-
- Lighting plays a big part in creating the mood of the image. The sun was
- placed beyond the horizon and the colors of the sky chosen to complement
- the fog/haze color.

-
- ** MtnLakes
-
- Lakes can be created in a number of ways. One of them generates lakes
- wherever there is flat ground in low spots on the terrain. It lets you
- make a lot of lakes quickly but doesn't give you much control over their placemant.
-
- You could use Color Maps to create lakes in very specific locations or
- adjust Sea Level to create one large lake.
-
- The lakes in this image used Custom Ecosystem Models to gain more color
- variation than would be possible with normal Ecosystems in WCS. Custom
- Ecosystem Models are useful any time you want to add more interesting
- and complex textures to the landscape.

-
- ** RedPlanet
-
- You can create a whole different feel from familiar terrain by changing
- the Ecosystem Parameters. All we used for this image were Rock and Bare
- ground, both colored red.
-
- The lava flows were done with a Color Map and the CMap Luminous property
- enabled.
-
- The earth rising over the horizon was rendered separately and used as a
- Background image while the foreground was rendered.
-
- To render the earth off-center we used the Center X and Center Y Motion
- Parameters to move the focus point in the image off to the left and above
- the image's center.
-

-
- ** VertExag
-
- You can create shaded relief maps using the "Topos as Surfaces" feature.
- Topography is shaded based on the sun position and colored based on
- elevation.
-
- Elevation coloring can consist of up to three color gradients.
- Here all three color gradients were used. The image is actually of Rocky
- Mountain National Park. Did you recognize it?
-
- We used a vertical exaggeration of about 5.

-
- ** World
-
- WCS is a global modeling program: It can model the whole globe.
-
- When you send in your registration card, we'll send you the DEM set used
- to create this globe image.
-
- Because WCS only loads into memory the DEM it is currently rendering you
- don't need any more memory to render the whole globe than you do to render
- a single valley.
-
- For this image we used Global Ecosystem and Snow gradients to lower the snow
- and Ecosystem Elevation Lines as you approach the poles.
