  1. Short: Versatile picture viewer - new: TIFF support

  6. JIV is a picture viewer. I can imagine that you're wondering
  7. now why I had to write yet another one... well, here's a list
  8. of features that should answer your question:
  9.  
  10.  · JIV supports many different file formats:
  11.  
  12.    - GIF (full GIF87a standard plus a subset of GIF89a).
  13.  
  14.    - BMP (MS-Windows and OS/2 variants, currently only
  15.      uncompressed).
  16.  
  17.    - IFF-ILBM (including HAM6, HAM8, EHB and 24bit formats).
  18.  
  19.    - PNM pictures (PBM, PGM and PPM in both binary and
  20.      ASCII format).
  21.  
  22.    - PCX (8bit/VGA, 24 bit, monochrome and _some_ 4 bit)
  23.  
  24.    - JPEG/JFIF, if the JPEG CODEC is installed.
  25.  
  26.    - a reasonable subset of the TIFF 6.0 standard,
  27.      including 1, 8 and 24 bit pictures in the
  28.      compression types 1, 5 and 32773.
  29.      JIV doesn't support the so-called "NeXT TIFF"
  30.      format yet, but I'm working on the problems
  31.      involved. Patience, please. :)

  33.  · JIV supports several types of display hardware:
  34.  
  35.    - all native graphics chipsets (OCS, ECS and AGA).
  36.  
  37.    - Cybergraphics emulation.
  38.  
  39.    - A2024.
  40.  
  41.    - Picasso-II/Village emulation.
  42.  
  43.    - Generic mode, should work with every graphics board that
  44.      emulates Workbench/Intuition. Tested with the Picasso-II
  45.      emulation and the Cybergraphics emulation.
  46.  
  47.  · JIV supports displaying over-sized images using autoscroll.
  48.  
  49.  · JIV supports multiple filenames and AmigaDOS pattern
  50.    matching.
  51.  
  52.  · JIV can dither pictures that use more colors than your
  53.    display hardware supports.
  54.  
  55.  · JIV offers an endless/slideshow mode that can be used for
  56.    (non-interactive) advertising, for example in a shop window.

  58. Please note that JIV is probably not the best choice for
  59. "small" Amiga configurations. It will need a lot of memory and
  60. (in some cases) quite a bit of computing power as well.
  61.  
  62. The minimum configuration for JIV is:
  63.  
  64.  · 68000 or better.
  65.  
  66.  · AmigaOS 2.04 (V37) or better.
  67.  
  68.  · 1 MByte or more of RAM.
  69.  
  70. This configuration should allow you to view small to medium-sized
  71. pictures (640x480x8 should just be possible).
  72.  
  73. The suggested configuration for JIV is:
  74.  
  75.  · 68030 or better.
  76.  
  77.  · AmigaOS 3.1 (V40) or better.
  78.  
  79.  · 4 MBytes of RAM or more.
  80.  
  81.  · Hard disk drive.

  83. This configuration will allow you to view most pictures you're
  84. likely to find. A bit more RAM wouldn't hurt, though. :-) And
  85. of course you'll need a graphics board if you want to display
  86. true-color pictures without dithering.

  90. Distribution License
  91.  
  92. This version of JIV may be distributed freely for
  93. non-commercial purposes only. You must distribute the entire
  94. archive INTACT and UNCHANGED, that is, you are NOT allowed
  95. to add files to the archive or remove files from the archive
  96. or change files in the archive.
  97.  
  98. Specifically, you're allowed to:
  99.  
  100.  · Distribute JIV on floppy-disk-based collections of
  101.    PD software.
  102.  
  103.  · Distribute JIV on CDROM-based collections of PD software IN
  104.    ARCHIVED FORM ONLY, unless you obtain a specific license
  105.    from the author.
  106.  
  107.  · Distribute JIV electronically, for example through email or
  108.    FTP, or through BBS systems.
  109.  
  110.    BBS sysops, do NOT add those pesky BBS advertisments to the
  111.    archive!

  113. Specifically, you're NOT allowed to:

  115.  · Distribute parts of the archive or changed/patched versions
  116.    of the files in this archive.

  118.  · Distribute JIV on CDROM in ready-to-run form, unless you
  119.    obtain a specific license from the author first.

  121.  · Distribute JIV in any form on CDROMs that contain
  122.    picture collections, unless you obtain a specific license
  123.    from the author first.¹

  125.  · Distribute JIV bundled together with a commercial product
  126.    (software, hardware or other), unless you obtain a specific
  127.    license from the author first.

  129. I have been informed that in the U.S. a patent has been
  130. granted for the LZW compression algorithm used in the GIF
  131. file format, and that the patent holder requires a license
  132. fee for use of this algorithm in commercial software
  133. (including shareware). Therefore I will not ask for any
  134. shareware fees from U.S. users of JIV.

  137. Please do not confuse this distribution license, which details
  138. the terms and conditions for DISTRIBUTING JIV, with the
  139. shareware license which details the terms and conditions for
  140. USING JIV.

  142. ¹ Permission is granted to include ARCHIVED versions of JIV on
  143.   the following CDROMs even if these CDROMs contain picture
  144.   collections:

  147.   · Saar/AMOK

  149.   Angela Schmidt has my permission to install JIV in both
  150.   archived and ready-to-run form on her Meeting-Pearls
  151.   CDROMs.

  173. Known problems:
  174.  
  175.  · If you're using an A4000/040 kickstart file on a computer
  176.    with a CPU <= 68020, the DISPLAY=GENERIC may crash your
  177.    machine. This is not a bug in JIV. The BestModeIDA() system
  178.    call in the A4000 kickfile seems to contain an instruction
  179.    that is only available on 68030 and above.

  181.    As far as I can tell, there are only two kinds of people
  182.    who use A4000 kickstart files on CPUs below 68030: former
  183.    registered developers and software pirates.
