  14. Welcome to ImageStudio-2.1.x

  17.     Welcome to ImageStudio v2.1.x. This release sees the start of
  18. the gradual process of separating various parts of the program into
  19. external modules. External modules have several advantages over putting
  20. all the features into one executable:
  21.  
  22.     o    The main executable can be smaller, thus requiring less
  23.         RAM at runtime.
  24.  
  25.     o    More modules can be added to the program without increasing
  26.         the program's size.
  27.  
  28.     o    Modules can be improved and upgraded without having to
  29.         to release new versions on the program.
  30.  
  31. At the moment the loaders and savers are modular, with plans for viewers
  32. and effects to become modules in the near future. When we have fixed the
  33. format of the modules we will release development information on how to
  34. write your own modules, but we refrain from doing this at the moment as
  35. the current format is liable to change.

  39. Keyfiles and Piracy
  40. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  41.     It became obvious from version 1.x.x, that our method of upgrading
  42. the software was becoming impractical for a large number of orders. We
  43. could therefore either (i) charge for upgrades or (ii) change the upgrade
  44. method. As we aim to provide the best value for money image processor on
  45. the Amiga, option (i) was decided against.
  46.  
  47.     We have therefore opted for the popular "keyfile" concept of
  48. upgrades. This works as follows:
  49.  
  50.     o    New registered users will receive the latest version of
  51.         ImageStudio along with a personalised keyfile. When
  52.         ImageStudio is started, if it finds a valid keyfile it
  53.         will "unlock" the program to become fully functional.
  54.  
  55.     o    Existing registered users will have to generate a new
  56.         keyfile for use with ImageStudio-2.0.0 and above. This is
  57.         done by running the new version of the program, selecting
  58.         `Create keyfile' in the `Project' menu and selecting their
  59.         registered copy of v1.x.x of ImageStudio. Once this
  60.         version of ImageStudio is deemed to be a valid registered
  61.         copy, a keyfile will be generated which will cause version
  62.         2 and above of ImageStudio to work fully.
  63.  
  64.     Please note:
  65.  
  66.     YOUR KEYFILE IS FOR YOUR PRIVATE USE AND SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO
  67.     ANYONE ELSE. Each keyfile is individual and can be traced back
  68.     to the registered user. Do not try and alter the keyfile, it won't
  69.     work.
  70.  
  71.     The only reason we can continue to sell ImageStudio so cheaply and
  72. provide free updates is because we have had a healthy response with people
  73. registering. If the number of registrations drops because people abuse the
  74. keyfile system and distribute pirate copies of the program, we will be
  75. forced to do one or several of the following:
  76.  
  77.     i)    Stop providing free upgrades. All programs will be
  78.         individually stamped and all upgrades must be paid for.
  79.  
  80.     ii)    Remove online help and provide printed manuals instead. This
  81.         will naturally raise the price substantially.
  82.  
  83.     iii)    Sell the software to a software publisher for commercial
  84.         distribution. This is likely to lead to a large price
  85.         increase.
  86.  
  87.     iv)    Stop developing ImageStudio and related products.
  88.  
  89. We see no reason why we should have to resort to any of these measures, but
  90. if you're using a pirated copy of ImageStudio now and you refuse to register,
  91. you WILL force this upon us.
  92.  
  93.     If you are using a pirate copy of ImageStudio, so will hundreds of
  94. others. A hundred orders to us is the difference between us writing the next
  95. version of the program, and us abandoning it. It really is your choice.

  97. Datatype loader
  98. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  99.     Making the modules external has caused problems in implementing the
  100. datatypes loader that was available in previous versions. It doesn't at the
  101. moment seem possible to just extract the image data from a datatype without
  102. first rendering to a window, saving out the file as IFF-ILBM or pasting to
  103. the clipboard (the method used previously). If anyone can shed any light
  104. on this, please let us know.
  105.  
  106.     In the meantime, it is suggested that a program like Multiview is
  107. used to load the image and this is then saved as IFF-ILBM which can be
  108. loaded into ImageStudio. Datatypes will always be a poor way of loading
  109. images.

  111. Future Plans
  112. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  113.     Our immediate plans are to increase the number of image file
  114. formats supported by ImageStudio. If you have any suggestions for
  115. formats we could support, let us know (including references to any
  116. documentation necessary). We already have plans for the following (if all
  117. goes well):
  118.  
  119.     o TIFF
  120.     o IFF-PCHG
  121.     o IFF-DEEP
  122.     o PPM
  123.     o PNG
  124.     o QRT
  125.     o SGI-RGB
  126.     o Sun raster
  127.  
  128.     The program itself is likely to get some more of the improvements
  129. suggested by users.
