  2.   Welcome to the MagicWB-Demo!

  5.   Diavolo  Backup  in the existing version uses parts of MagicWB 2.0. Amongst
  6.   them are especially the colored logos, images, symbols and icons of Diavolo 
  7.   Backup.  If  you like  this look&feel  (i.e. the colors, the layout and the
  8.   realization),  it  might interest you that you can obtain this look&feel on
  9.   your whole Amiga Workbench with the use of MagicWB.
  10.  
  11.   If  you  would like to get a first impression of MagicWB and what it can do
  12.   to your Workbench,  double-click  the  icon  "Show MagicWB"  in the present
  13.   directory.  Please  keep  in mind that you are actually only seeing a small
  14.   part  of  the  whole  MagicWB package. MagicWB consists of much more icons,
  15.   patterns, fonts and  dock-images,  which naturally can not all be displayed
  16.   here due to claustrophobia (i.e. space limits :).

  18.   If  you think it'd be a good idea to register and get the latest version of
  19.   MagicWB,  just  double-click the icon "Registration". There you will get to
  20.   know  all  about  the  shareware organization SASG (the largest of its kind
  21.   on the Amiga) and how you can register directly with the author of MagicWB.
  22.  
  23.   Under  certain  circumstances  the  icons  in  this directory are not being
  24.   displayed  with the correct colors and hence look somewhat strange. In this
  25.   case  you  have not loaded the correct color palette. Just double-click the
  26.   icon "ClickForColors" and the colors will be adjusted. You should also take 
  27.   care that your Workbench screen is running with 8 colors to get the benefit
  28.   of the full MagicWB color-scheme.

  30.   The  following  paragraphs  will  deal with  what  MagicWB is and which new
  31.   features can be found in version 2.0:

  34.                                MagicWB v2.0
  35.                                ============
  36.  
  37.   The  definitive  WB-Enhancer  no  Amiga  can do without.  MagicWB is a full
  38.   replacement  for  the  graphic  user interface of the Workbench and has be-
  39.   come  the standard on the Amiga.  MagicWB 2.0 is completely restructured on
  40.   a  new  color-allocation scheme which more than doubles the speed of the WB
  41.   and  reduces  chip-consumption  to  only a third compared with all previous
  42.   versions  and  also  features  a  highly  improved  color palette.  MWB 2.0
  43.   introduces  a  never-before-seen  standard  for  over  four  dozen  of  new
  44.   image-drawers  to  achieve a more diversified look on your WB.  More icons,
  45.   dock-brushes, a dozen of new patterns, fonts and a AA-support complete this
  46.   special product.

  48.   This is version 2.0, a major update (upgrade) to version 1.5.

  56. NEW FEATURES OF VERSION 2.0
  57. ---------------------------

  59. o MagicWB is an SASG product.
  60.  
  61. o The  conception  of  MagicWB  has  completely  changed.  Color  allocation,
  62.   management  and  display  of  the  patterns and the color palette have been
  63.   significantly altered and improved.  It is highly recommended to update any
  64.   older MagicWB version for the new color allocation system paves the way for
  65.   all  forthcoming  MagicWB  versions, also for the conceived 16-color-WB (of
  66.   which  the realization is dependent on the amount of registrations for this
  67.   current  version  2.0).   Besides,  many other program packages are already
  68.   supporting the new color system.

  70. o A  "demon"  (a  special  utility)  is  now  working  in  the background and
  71.   watches over the correct color palette display under any resolution, screen
  72.   depth   and   on  any  graphics  board.   He  takes  care  of  the  palette
  73.   re-allocation when a new screen is opened and checks which patterns have to
  74.   be  remapped or not.  (OS3.x) Furthermore the user can now again define his
  75.   own  colors  for  the  cursor  without getting in conflict with the MagicWB
  76.   palette.

  78. o Due to the new color system MagicWB has become  2-3  times  faster than any
  79.   previous version,  nearly as fast as the original Commodore 4-color-WB!  At
  80.   the  same time it needs 67% less chip memory and over 50% less diskspace on
  81.   the  system  partition.   The  increase  of  speed  is  enormous.  Also the
  82.   patterns are displayed much faster without getting dithered anymore.

  84. o The  MagicWB  palette  has  been  considerably improved, especially AA- and
  85.   graphics  board  users  will benefit from this new palette.  Because of the
  86.   fine  increments  of the 8-bit palette (8 bits per gun) the MagicWB palette
  87.   could  be  optimized to the maximum of perfection.  The palette is a little
  88.   bit  darker now to compensate for the old imperfection to manually decrease
  89.   the  black-level  (brightness)  of  the  monitor (since the old palette has
  90.   always  been  too  bright  and  resulted  in  a  loss  of the 3-D-effect of
  91.   MagicWB's  icons  and patterns).  Furthermore the gradient's 3-D-effect was
  92.   improved  by  increasing the difference of the brightness level between the
  93.   colors  halfshine  and  halfshadow.  This results in a strong 3-D-effect of
  94.   the  brown  and  gray gradients.  Finally,  the saturation of all colors is
  95.   increased which leads to a far more vivid workbench with richer colors.

  97. o As  a  foretaste  of  the  planned  AA-version,  MagicWB  already  offers a
  98.   AA-support:  Some  new patterns exploit the possibilities of the AA-Chipset
  99.   by using the copper in a way which results in a workbench background with a
  100.   24-bit   color-gradient.   This  smashing  workstation-look  just  needs  a
  101.   16-color  workbench  in  conjunction  with  MagicWB  and  its  new  utility
  102.   'MagicCopper'.

  104. o The  patterns  (in  a new format now)  will  also  work under OS2.x without
  105.   having to be converted.
  106.  
  107. o A  dozen  of  new  patterns  in  the  MagicWB-style  were added:  Wonderful
  108.   backgrounds  like,  for  example, various stone structures, marble effects,
  109.   sand,  paper,  rain,  leather and gradient logos like IntelOutside, MagicWB
  110.   etc.

  112. o All  third-party  icons  which  were  displayed  in  a distorted color look
  113.   before are now correctly displayed by the new 'MagicWB-Demon'.
  114.  
  115. o 'IconUpdate'  features  a  new  and powerful workbench-mode:  Old icons can
  116.   now  easily  be  converted to MagicWB-style icons by dragging the specified
  117.   icons  over  an  app-window  and  dropping them onto it  (drag&drop).  This
  118.   guarantees a quick processing of many icons in only a few minutes.

  120. o MagicWB  2.0  invents  a  new  standard  for  the  Amiga workbench:  Image-
  121.   Drawers!  This  provides  the  user with a far more diversified look of the
  122.   workbench.  Each  drawer  gets  its  own  specific  imagery which shows the
  123.   content of the drawer.  The complete System-partition will be equipped with
  124.   the  new  image-drawers  by default with the Installer.  Altogether over 50
  125.   different  image-drawers are being supplied with the new MagicWB 2.0.  This
  126.   should be complete to cover all different categories.  The placing of these
  127.   special drawers is carried out by the new drag&drop feature of 'IconUpdate'
  128.   which  makes  this  task  a  piece of cake.  All your partitions are set up
  129.   within minutes to achieve this refurbished and decent look of your Amiga.

  131. o 'UpdateDrawers'  recognizes  these  new  image-drawers and skips them while
  132.   performing its update on the normal drawer icons.  This feature saves you a
  133.   lot of time since you won't need to place the image-drawers again.

  135. o The  default  icons  have  been reworked  (new trashcan, drawer etc.).  New
  136.   default  icons  for  other  programs  have been added (def_KingCON, def_MUI
  137.   etc.)

  139. o The  device  icons  have  been  strongly  improved and now do have the same
  140.   standardized  height  to  ensure  a  perfect  horizontal  alignment  on the
  141.   workbench   screen.   New  device  icons  have  been  added  (CD,  Network,
  142.   Cartridge, etc.)

  144. o A  new  XEN-font was added:  XEN/11.  This font now features all characters
  145.   and is perfectly suitable for higher resolutions as a fixed system font.

  147. o New  dock-brushes  were  added,  some  old  dock-brushes  were improved and
  148.   redesigned from scratch.

  150. o The  style  of  all  MagicWB-Icons  has  been  improved:  The annoying blue
  151.   border has disappeared and was replaced by the color halfshadow.

  153. o Many old  MagicWB-Icons have been improved and redesigned  (i.e. Prefs) and
  154.   various new icons have been added.

  156. o The  Installer  was  considerably  improved.  Installations and updates are
  157.   both  performed  by  the  Installer now and the system analysis is far more
  158.   precise.  There shouldn't be any problems by now.

  160. o A  bonus  directory  can  be  found  in  the new MagicWB 2.0.  It carries a
  161.   couple of presets in the MagicWB-style for other programs.

  163. o MagicWB  features  a  very  special "goody".  It's a hidden gag!  Let's see
  164.   when you will brace yourself for the real kick...  :-)

  166. o Various bugfixings were applied on the different MagicWB utilities.

  170. REQUIREMENTS

  173.   MagicWB needs at least Kickstart/Workbench 2.04.
  174.  
  175.   MagicWB  runs  on  all Amigas with a harddrive.  A monitor which is able to
  176.   display  square-pixel-screenmodes (like 640x480, 640x512, 800x600, 1024x768
  177.   etc.) without flicker is recommended.

  184.   A  registered version of MagicWB 2.0 can be ordered for US$ 20,- or DM 30,-
  185.   (or any other currency supported by the SASG registration program) with the
  186.   help  of  the  SASG  registration  program.   Just  double-click  the  icon
  187.   "Registration" in this directory to activate this program.

  189.   Over half a year of development was invested in MagicWB 2.0.  It is a major
  190.   update (upgrade), which means that it is a bigger update for which you have
  191.   to  pay.  All registered MagicWB users can obtain MagicWB 2.0 for only half
  192.   the  price  of the standardized SASG registration fee, i.e.  US$ 10,- or DM
  193.   15,- (or any other currency supported by the SASG registration program).
