  82. INSTALLATION

  84.     Software installation is done with Commodore's Installer program.
  85. It is very easy to install, and the installation script is very well
  86. documented.  The version of the software in the box is 1.0, but there are
  87. many patches available almost everywhere, or directly from BSC.

  89.     The card is a bit hard to plug it in, as the dial does not fit in
  90. the opening. You have to remove the guide for the card. The "jumpers" are
  91. set for USA regulations - you may find in the manual the correct positions
  92. for European standards.

  94.     Once the software in installed, you have to set it to the network
  95. type you're using. The board has been successfully tested in the USA, France,
  96. Switzerland, Germany and Great Britain.  It might work in many other
  97. different countries, although nobody has tested it.

  100. WHAT IS ISDN ANYWAY??
  101.  
  102.     ISDN is to an analog phone line like what a CD is to an LP.  An ISDN
  103. line has almost no line noise, and it allows you to transfer data at a much
  104. higher rate than on regular analog lines.
  105.  
  106.     ISDN allows you to use, on a single line, a telephone, faxes (class
  107. 4 or lower), visual-conferences, high-speed data transfers, etc.

  110. HOW DOES THIS WORK?
  111.  
  112.     (Note: This may slightly vary from country to country)
  113.  
  114.     ISDN allows you to transmit informations "digitally" instead of the
  115. regular "analog" way.
  116.  
  117.     With each phone line, you get 10 different phone numbers. You may
  118. set one different phone number per device connected to the network.  For
  119. example, you may have a telephone, a fax, a BBS and an answering machine,
  120. all on one line, without any conflict.
  121.  
  122.     ISDN lines may carry two communications at the same time.
  123. Information is transmitted via two B-channels (binary) at 64 Kbits per
  124. second each. There is also a D-channel (data) at 16 Kbits per second which
  125. carries information such as Caller-ID, tax information, busy signal, etc...

  128. THE HARDWARE

  130.     In the box, there is one ZORRO II ISDN board, one printed manual,
  131. one 3.5" disk, and a special wire to connect the card to ISDN.

  133.     On the card, there are about ten chips (surface mounted), 7 jumpers,
  134. two connectors for ISDN-IN and ISDN-OUT, one connector for a phone handset
  135. (not included), a CINCH connector for Audio-in, and a dial to set the gain.

  138. DIGITAL MODEM
  139.  
  140.     ISDN-MASTER does not allow you to connect on "regular" analog
  141. modems, but you may connect to any other ISDN compatible device.  The
  142. software supports X.75 and V.110 protocols.  X.75 goes up to 64000 baud
  143. (!!), and V.110 goes up to 38400 baud!
  144.  
  145.     The "bscisdn.device" emulates a Hayes-compatible modem and may be
  146. used as replacement for the "serial.device".  As there may be two
  147. connections at the same time, one card has two "units".

  149.     The transfer rates are around 7800 cps (tested with TERM 3.4) I also
  150. tried to connect from unit 0 to unit 1 and make a transfer, and I got the
  151. same results! There is NO CPU wait time!!

  154. WILHELMTEL SOFTWARE
  155.  
  156.     I had to "borrow" my neighbour's handset to do this test.  The
  157. software (WilhelmTel) is a commodity which loads when booting.  It contains
  158. four "elements":

  162.     - Answering machine
  163.     - Phone taxes

  168.     This software allows you to use your Amiga as a regular phone, with
  169. many useful options, such as:

  171.     - Seeing actual phone taxes.
  172.     - Having two conversations at the same time.
  173.     - Conference mode (you hear both callers, but they can't hear
  174.       each other).
  175.     - Mute with AUDIO-IN, allows you to play music to the callers
  176.       directly from your HIFI.
  177.     - Redial, Caller-ID, etc...

  180. PHONEBOOK

  182.     You may store the most frequent callers, so when they call you,
  183. their name pops up instead of the phone number.  You may choose for each
  184. entry if you want to hear the ring or not, or even to send a "busy" signal
  185. for "unwanted" callers!!!

  188. ANSWERING MACHINE

  190.     This is the strong part of the software! You may record any
  191. conversation, you may record the "welcome" message, you may even record one
  192. personalized message per caller, etc...
  193. The quality of the samplings are simply PER-FECT!!!

  195.     The size of a sample is 8 Kbytes per second recorded!  You may
  196. listen to the samples either with the handset or through the Amiga speakers.

  201.     Prints out a list of all incoming and outgoing calls, and prints the
  202. total money spent.

  207.     You may create your own "ringers."  You also may define a ringer and
  208. a message per phone number, and even one special message if the disk is full.

  213.     It comes with printed German manual and German AmigaGuide file.  The
  214. guide is well done, although I couldn't understand much, but the printed
  215. manual is not clear at all.

  217.     The board is fairly easy to install and you won't need the manual
  218. too much.

  243. VERY friendly and help a lot.  Further BETA versions are available directly
  244. from the authors as soon as they are released.

  267. companies. With this card, just about anyone can connect to this wonderful
  268. network. Make a step into the 21th century!
