  15. c.s.a.advocacy "Frequently Asked Questions Which Are Asked Very Frequently"
  16. list.  As promised, here are the questions, and our Amiga Panel of Experts
  17. Specializing in Helpful Information Transfer has provided the simple answers!

  62.     First of all, Jamie, A.P.E.S.H.I.T. thanks you for your question.
  63.     Folks, if any of you don't know this, Jamie is well known in the
  64.     field of Waterskiing.  He represented the United States on the 1988
  65.     Olympic team.  Unfortunately, due to a small oversight on his part,
  66.     he showed up for the *Winter* Olympics... where he still managed a
  67.     respectable fourteenth place, despite the fact that the event wasn't
  68.     held.
  69.  
  70.     Enough history... back to the question.  Commodore has always had a
  71.     strong interest in watersports.  Many of you may recall the 1983 C-64
  72.     advertising campaign which featured Mark Spitz, former Olympic
  73.     swimming champion.  The commercials showed him diving into a
  74.     swimming pool while holding a computer, and getting instantly
  75.     electrocuted.  A voice over says:  "This wouldn't have happened with
  76.     a Commodore."
  77.  
  78.     So to answer your question:  evidently, CBM still hasn't recognized
  79.     the size and importance of the ever-growing "Aquatic Amiga" market.
  80.     Maybe someday....

  83. SECTION LXI:  MARC BARRETT EXCLUSIVE
  84. ====================================

  86.     The following 15 questions were ALL submitted by Marc Barrett
  87. (barrett@iastate.edu).  To quote Dave Barry, "I am not making this up."
  88. Yes, 15 questions.  Numbered, I might add, from 1-14, with two 11's.
  89. A.P.E.S.H.I.T. is currently very puzzled as to the significance of this.
  90. Anyway, here goes!
  91.  
  92. 1.  Why doesn't Commodore spend more on R&D?
  93.  
  94.     This is a complex issue with many ramifications.  Some people
  95.     say it's because lower spending means higher profits.  Others
  96.     say that lower R&D spending fools the competition into lowering
  97.     *its* R&D spending.  Still others claim that the current
  98.     "recession" is at fault, forcing companies like Commodore to
  99.     break for "recess" so they can go out on the "playground" and
  100.     use the "swings".
  101.  
  102.     But the real reason that Commodore doesn't spend more on "R&D"
  103.     is that they don't know how to spell it.
  104.  
  105. 2.  Why doesn't Commodore advertize [sic] the A3000 on TV?
  106.  
  107.     Commodore *does* advertise the A3000 on TV.  But the ads are hard
  108.     to spot.  The ingenious CBM Marketing Department has managed to
  109.     place subliminal messages in Apple, IBM, and Coors commercials.
  110.  
  111.     If you can, try to videotape one of the new Coors ads.  Then
  112.     replay the first 20 seconds of it, and freeze the frame just
  113.     before the announcer's final words.  Stare intently at the upper
  114.     left corner of the screen, with your eyes mere centimeters away
  115.     from the glass.  After several hours of this, you will begin to
  116.     see the laughing face of Irving Gould.
  117.  
  118.     Those clever Marketing people... what will they think of next??
  119.  
  120. 3.  Why did Commodore abandon Amiga UNIX?
  121.  
  122.     The answer is quite simple, but rather sad.
  123.  
  124.     In early 1990, Amiga UNIX sneaked up when Commodore wasn't looking,
  125.     and bonked it really hard on the head.  In retaliation, Commodore
  126.     kicked Amiga UNIX full force in the shins.  Bam!  At that point,
  127.     Amiga UNIX should have just left Commodore alone, but no -- it got
  128.     up off the floor and landed a savage punch to Commodore's
  129.     midsection.  POW!!  Now Commodore was really mad, and nailed Amiga
  130.     UNIX to a tree with a six-foot-long iron spike right through the
  131.     head.  THWACK!!!  Bleeding profusely, Amiga UNIX whipped out a .45
  132.     Magnum and began to fire!!  Commodore ducked for cover and began
  133.     throwing razor-sharp, 3.5" disks at high velocity.  The battle
  134.     escalated for hours, until finally the two computer giants got tired
  135.     and went home.
  136.  
  137.     Essentially, Commodore and Amiga UNIX simply aren't speaking these
  138.     days, and neither one wants to apologize first.  It's all rather
  139.     silly.
  140.  
  141. 4.  Why doesn't Commodore develop an A3000/A2000 CD-ROM?
  142.  
  143.     Actually, a third-party company now sells an A2000/A3000 CD-ROM.
  144.     Just pop the CD-ROM into a disk player, press "play", and your CD
  145.     player instantly turns into an A2000 or A3000!
  146.  
  147.     ...what?  Oh... you meant a 2000/3000 CD-ROM *drive*!!  Never mind!
  148.  
  149. 5.  Why doesn't Commodore develop an Amiga CD-ROM (not CDTV) system to 
  150.     compete with MAC and MPC?
  151.  
  152.     Despite popular belief, Commodore and Apple are not competitors.
  153.     Actually, they are both owned and run by the same person.  This
  154.     is the main reason that you rarely see advertisements from one
  155.     company openly challenging the other.
  156.  
  157.     The owner, Claude "Binoculars" Spiffspimster, is a recluse who lives
  158.     in a small hut in an undisclosed part of Northern Asia.  He spends
  159.     most of his days hacking on his Mac III and Amiga 4000T, skydiving,
  160.     and firing Commodore Marketing people.
  161.  
  162. 6.  Why doesn't Commodore develop a mid-range Amiga with '030, de-interlacer,
  163.     and HD?
  164.  
  165.     Thanks to recent conferences between President Bush and Boris
  166.     Yeltsin, the United States and Russia have agreed to an
  167.     unconditional ban on all mid-range Amigas... particularly those
  168.     aimed at strategic sites in North America.
  169.  
  170. 7.  Why doesn't Commodore sell the A600 or A500+ in the U.S.?
  171.  
  172.     They don't want to compete with the A3000T.  Recent studies by
  173.     Commodore Marketing show that the average Amiga 3000T owner would
  174.     have bought an A600 or A500+ instead, if it had been available.
  175.  
  176.     Those clever Marketing people... what will they think of next??
  177.  
  178. 8.  Why doesn't Commodore do something really innovative, like collaborate
  179.     with some small but innovative up-and-coming company to develop new Amiga
  180.     OS software, hardware, or both?
  181.  
  182.     Shhh... don't let the secret get out, but Commodore actually is
  183.     doing this now.  Look for specially marked packages of
  184.     Commodore-endorsed "Mrs. Fields Chocolate Fat Agnus Chip Cookies" at
  185.     a store near you.

  187. 9.  Why doesn't Commodore develop an '040 system?
  188.  
  189.     The Motorola 68040 processor is already ancient history.  Commodore
  190.     is currently preparing for the "next generation" of CPU's:  the
  191.     Motorola 68000, which runs at a blazing 8MHz.  Rumor has it that
  192.     these little speed demons will soon be appearing in Commodore's
  193.     top-of-the-line machines.  Watch out.
  194.  
  195. 10. Why did Commodore try getting the Amiga into universities, and give up
  196.     so quickly?
  197.  
  198.     It is not at all clear that Commodore has "given up" the educational
  199.     market.  For example, the Educational Discount Program is still in
  200.     effect:  any student, professor, or custodial staff member may
  201.     purchase Amiga hardware at greatly reduced prices.
  202.  
  203.     Originally, the Educational Discount Program was criticized because
  204.     it required the buyer to purchase a complete system.  Nowadays,
  205.     it is possible to buy smaller components separately, all the way
  206.     down to individual atoms.  For example, one can buy the left half
  207.     of an internal floppy drive, or one pin of an Enhanced Denise chip.
  208.  
  209.     As for cultivating relationships with universities, Commodore is
  210.     currently negotiating with the University of Chickenmilk, Wisconsin,
  211.     to open up an Amiga Lab.  Commodore has generously donated one CDTV
  212.     unit for evaluation, and it is set up and available for general use
  213.     inside a cardboard box in the locked basement of the university
  214.     cafeteria.
  215.  
  216. 11. Why are all the people on the Commodore Board of Directors either
  217.     bankers, real estate agents, or has-been Army Generals?
  218.  
  219.     No special reason.  Statistically, this is a very likely occurrence.
  220.     For the past 7-8 years, the United States has seen a tremendous rise
  221.     in the number of bankers and real estate agents per cubic meter.  In
  222.     some major cities, it has become difficult to wipe one's nose
  223.     without knocking down two or three real estate agents.  Bankers are
  224.     an even bigger problem in rural areas, where exterminators regularly
  225.     fumigate people's houses to remove the thousands of bankers living
  226.     in the walls.
  227.  
  228.     Contrary to popular belief, there are no Army Generals on
  229.     Commodore's Board of Directors.  However, Commodore regularly puts
  230.     generals' names in their Quarterly Reports so they are not invaded
  231.     and taken over by Sony.
  232.  
  233. 12. Why have there been two vacancies on the Commodore Board of Directors
  234.     for the past two years?
  235.  
  236.     The rent is too high.
  237.  
  238. 13. Why did Commodore cancel the A4000?
  239.  
  240.     It was late with its rent payments.
  241.  
  242. 14. Why does Commodore pour scarce R&D and marketing funds into the tame
  243.     black hole that they call the CDTV?
  244.  
  245.     It brings in the babes.
  246.  
  247. And finally...
  248. 11. Why does Commodore suck so much?
  249.  
  250.     Because it has lost all its teeth?
