  29.     The phone rang in the quiet apartment and Jennifer sat up in bed and 
  30. put her book on the night stand.

  32.     "Hello?" she answered.

  34.     "Jennifer?" a voice asked.

  36.     "Yes, this is she."

  38.     "Jennifer, this is the operator.  I have a woman on the phone.  Her 
  39. name is Julie.  She wants to speak to a lesbian or bisexual woman.  Will you 
  40. take the call?

  42.     "Yes," Jennifer answered, "Put it through."

  44.     "Hello?" a timid female voice on the other end of the line.

  46.     "Hello Julie?" Jennifer said gently, "My name is Jennifer.  I'd like to 
  47. get to know you better.  Can you tell me what you want?"

  49.     There was brief silence on the line. Jennifer sensed the hesitance 
  50. came from embarrassment.  This was confirmed by the tone of her voice 
  51. when Julie finally started speaking.  "I've never done this before," she 
  52. almost whispered, "but I've always been interested in women and this 
  53. seemed safe...." her voice trailed off.

  55.     Jennifer laughed softly.  "I understand Julie...  There was a time when 
  56. I was like that too.  But now I've been with a number of women, and it is 
  57. wonderful."

  59.     "Oh, tell me," Julie nearly begged.

  72. came over the phone, from the other end of the line.
