                             Our Vacation

  Have you ever read those vacation brochures, telling you about
the wonderful scenery, and travel accommodations, and all the great
stuff that these travel services offer? Yes, the same ones that
you see on the TV and hear one the radio. The ones that you think
"Yea, I'd like to go there, and see all that too."

  For my wife and me, they were the things that we had been waiting
for. After three kids there never seemed the time, or the money,
to go on a vacation like this. Just the two of us. Every year the
kids knew exactly where we were going, and sometimes they would
even tell us, instead of keeping us in suspense.

  Ahhh, but this year we had a surprise for them. There would not
be Disneyland, or the Grand Canyon, or any of the other places
that the kids wanted, hell they weren't even going. This year we
decided to take a trip just for us. We weren't old yet, and wanted
to have some fun while we still could. Without the troubles that
the kids always seemed to bring with them.

  And now to those wonderful brochures. Those dreamy pictures
capturing the waves in the afternoon sun. And those great tropical
beaches with miles of peace and quiet, where two people could just
relay and enjoy each other. Yes, that was indeed that we were
really looking for.

  So we looked at all of those great brochures, and selected the
most perfect setting for that romantic honeymoon for two. Called
the travel service, and booked a two week stay on a little island
in the tropics. First we would fly down to florida, then take a
cruise, then the warmth of our own little paradise in the sun for
one full week. Then we would once again enjoy the slow cruise back,
and fly home to the children. At times thinking about the trip, we
even started to joke about just staying there and just never coming
home.....

  The flight to Florida was just like every other flight. Crowded
by all of the people, and everybody trying to get you to tell them
your life story, then telling you how you could use some insurance
to cover this or that in your life, and they just happened to have
a policy to cover just that type of thing.... Very much the boredom
that we were trying to get away from... And this was not going to
effect our trip, and we just looked at each other, without saying
a word we began to smile. Knowing what we were thinking about. And
in just a few more hours, we would be on the boat to heaven...

  Remember that brochure we were talking about..... Well if you
read the fine print, or listen real close to the sales people they
say something about "double occupancy." Now this means different
things to different people. To us that meant that we would be two
people in the same room. To the cruise lines, that meant that there
would be two couples in the same room. This was not exactly what we
had been expecting, when we walked into our cabin and found that it
was occupied by another couple. It was obvious that they had not
expected to see us either.... This was most embarrassing.

  I went to the captain and started to complain, but he told me
that there were no other cabins that were not "Double occupancy",
and that every cabin was filled. If we wanted to leave, there was
no refunds. As we did not want to miss the vacation, we went back
to the cabin, to unpack .....

  We introduced ourselves and all four of us felt kind of awkward.
We divided amongst ourselves the beds, closets and dressers.  I had
a feeling this would not be the great get away from the children
that we had expected, especially since my wife is somewhat of a
prude. I thought that by being alone just the two of us we would
re-capture the excitement of our honey-moon but now those hopes
were vanishing. The thought never occurred to me that things could
be different.

  That evening we got dressed up all fancy and went down to dinner.
We thought that we'd be sitting with the Keller's but there were
no empty tables so we both went our own ways.  The meal was lavish
and I felt was up to par with the price we had payed for our cruise
but I've been known to have food allergies and suspecting that I
might be sick I went back to our cabin to get my antihistamines

I was expecting the cabin to be empty but much to my surprise,
Gloria was in the cabin a little bit flustered.  She's spilled some
wine on her pink taffeta dress and didn't know quite how to remove
the stain.  Being the person I am I could not but help this damsel

our luggage for stain remover.  I hadn't given this a second
thought but when I turned around to take the dress from her, there
