  7.      This thriller, winner of the mystery Writers of America's
  8.      Edgar Allen Poe award for best novel of 1981, is by the
  9.      author of "Punish Me with Kisses," a psychological mystery
  10.      with heavy undertones of S&M. "Peregrine" the story of a mad
  11.      falconer who terrorizes New York City with his bird of prey
  12.      is fascinating as a source of lore on the arcane subject of
  13.      falconry. The author makes clear, some of the trapping of
  14.      falconry: the tethers, the hood, the rigid training translate
  15.      very smoothly when the focus of all this is not a bird but a
  16.      woman.

  18.      ...And then, just as she thought she'd reach the door, her
  19.      arms were pinioned behind her back. She screamed, struggled,
  20.      then smelled the aroma of leather as something tight and
  21.      pliant was pulled down upon her head.

  24.      sort of hood tied around her neck. She could not see, and
  25.      often she could not hear, though sometimes she could do both.

  33.      her mouth. But her ears were still uncovered. She wanted to
  34.      close them, did not want to hear. But she could feel his
  35.      mouth very close, could feel his breath against her ear. "I
  36.      am training you, Pambird. Taking possession. You are mine now,
  37.      and soon you will hunt for me. You will fly for me...

  39.      Hollander watched Pam, sleeping now, her eyes and ears
  40.      covered by her hood, her hands bound upon her stomach, her
  41.      feet tied securely to the cot. The cuffs on her ankles and
  42.      wrists were firm but so not so tight to cut off circulation
  43.      or cause her limbs to numb...

  45.      He led her to the window and, certain her legs were securely
  46.      tied to the pipes of the radiator, he bent her backwards over
  47.      the sill so that she was staring up at the clouds. Thus he
  48.      forced her to look straight into the sky as he told her she
  49.      would fly there and that he would teach her how. Then he
  50.      turned her over, fastened her legs again so he bent her
  51.      forward she faced straight down. Then he uncovered her eyes
  52.      and held her above the city by her hair, then plunged her so
  53.      she would know what it felt like to be in a falcon's scoop...
