- DePINDER'S WAR, by Takhira
-
- Part One: The Front
-
- Chapter Two
-
- DePinder swiftly finished dressing, as Corbayne just stood there and let
- the news sink in. "You're the new Captain of the Lance?"
- She fastened her sword around her hips. "I guess when the High Court
- declares you a man, you truly do get all the privileges that go with it,
- particularly when you have a father who's a Grand Captain and can
- manipulate the beauracracy in the Golden City as he pleases."
- "I suppose we should retrieve Grand Captain DePolarno from the stockade,"
- Corbayne said, hesitantly.
- "We have the orders, and that's all we need." DePinder picked the
- parchment bearing the Imperial seal off the desk. "Have all Squadleaders
- in the compound assemble in the council chamber in one hour. I'll gather
- the Lieutenants. Let's make this official."
- "Yes, sir." Corbayne snapped to attention, clicked his booted heels, and
- grinned broadly at DePinder right before he walked swiftly from the room.
-
- Corbayne walked rapidly through the halls, a smile playing on his lips.
- He had felt that DePinder would rise to the top of the Imperial Army, but
- her progress was even swifter than he could ever had imagined. And now the
- pall that had hung over her career had lifted: No longer did the threat
- exist that a new Captain of the Lance with either no sense of what this
- part of the front was like or, worse, a follower of Nelemi be placed over
- them. Now, DePinder was in command of the 234th Lance, and hopefully she'd
- continue to do the impossible with Corbayne right behind her.
- He had been ordered to teach her magic, since he entered the Academy with
- some training, and DePinder had been essentially ejected from the Academy
- in the Golden City for not being able to understand even the most basic
- concepts of the art. It was only because her father was a Grand Captain
- that she had been given a second chance there in the south, and the
- instructor had told him that a first year cadet could much better afford
- to waste his time on an "arcanely stupid" first year cadet than anyone
- else in the school.
- As Corbayne's thoughts returned to his first meeting with DePinder, it
- amazed him how much he'd grown to care about her, considering that before
- they met, he'd decided she was without doubt an intolerable bitch:
- DePinder's strange history was all over Academy only days after she had
- been transferred there from the one in the Golden City: the only child of
- a Grand Captain, she had been legally declared a male so that she could
- persue a military career as something other than a scout. Although she
- could never be a Grand Captain, she would now be able to carry on the
- family legacy in some way. Corbayne had convinced himself that anyone who
- had come from a background of such privileged--where a father snaps his
- fingers, and the daughter turns into a son--would be impossible to deal
- with on any level, let alone as a peer trying to be a teacher.
- However, it turned out quite differently. Her beauty had struck him
- immediately. He hadn't been sure what a young woman who had been legally
- declared a man would look like, but he hadn't at all pictured the
- finely-featured face, with its narrow nose, high cheekbones, lightly
- arched eyebrows, and copious freckles. He had been attracted to DePinder
- almost immediately, not in a sexual sense, since was too small for his
- taste--officers took busty women, he'd always been told, and DePinder was
- anything but busty--but she was beautiful in the same way a flower was
- beautiful, something delicate that needed to be protected. Of course, she
- was anything but delicate as well, but it was a starting point for their
- relationship, and although her body hadn't changed much since they'd met
- 10 years ago, he had grown to find her very, very attractive.
- Corbayne admitted to himself years ago that he loved DePinder, even if
- they had never made love and probably never would; they were too close for
- that. DePinder was a colleague, confidant and friend, not a lover. As
- Corbayne tutored her in the use of magic, which was really not hard
- because once he stripped away all the philosophical mumbo-jumbo and just
- presented her with the raw figures and diagrams, she swiftly mastered the
- art, DePinder helped him over his fear of horses (a great career booster
- beyond measure in the Imperial Army which was mostly) and the short-cuts
- needed to do better in sword practice. Through four years and four
- different relationships with women from the city near the Academy, she was
- there for him, even if he was never able to be there for her in the same
- way. If DePinder had ever had a relationship, sexual or otherwise, with
- anyone at the Academy aside from him, she kept it well-hidden. On the
- other hand, she did have a hard time meeting people due to her odd legal
- status: One night, when they had both been roaringly drunk in mourning
- over Corbayne's latest failed love affair, she had told him, "If I screw a
- man, I'm engaging in homosexuality, because I'm legally a man. And if I do
- it with a woman, it's the same, because I'm physically a woman. All I can
- do is masturbate, fantasize and thank Nelemi that's not frowned upon by
- Gods or society."
- On graduation day, DePinder and he had made a promise to each other,
- "Whoever gets a unit command first, will bring the other onboard as an
- aide." And after five years of service attached to the navy of the Inner
- Sea, he received a set of transfer papers: Lieutenant of the 234th Lance
- Arim DePinder required a Staff Officer and Magical Adjunct.
- And now the Lieutenant was the Captain, and he was still at her side.
- Friends are better than lovers, he thought, as he reached the first
- barracks.
-
- Six of the ten Squadleaders were in the compound, and they were all
- uniformly excited about the news that the uncertainty of the 234th's
- command future had been decided that the Captain had been recruited from
- within its own ranks. As Corbayne walked toward the stockade area, he
- thought he heard DePinder's voice from within the Officer's Lounge; he
- resisted the temptation to stop and listen, as he knew there was at least
- on of the Lieutenants who would not be at all happy about her being
- promoted; if she wanted him to know what the Lieutenants were working out
- in the wake of promotion, she'd tell him.
- He stepped out into the compounds inner courtyard and out onto one of the
- boards that had been laid out to keep those whose business involved
- frequent crossings between the two buildings that was the 234th's
- headquarters. The rain was coming down steadily, as always. Once again, he
- found himself once again making a mental note to have a cloak room
- established somewhere near the exit into the inner courtyard.
- At one time, it had been an elven monastery, but the elves who lived here
- had been massacred over a century ago. The larger of the buildings was two
- stories above ground that were a confounding maze of rooms and hallways.
- Records indicated that there were several dungeon levels under it as well,
- but over a century of searches had yet to find the entrance to them. Even
- in the few years Corbayne had been here, after all this time, three new
- rooms had been discovered off the main conference room. A favorite
- dinner-time discussion between DePinder and Corbayne was what an elven
- city would be like, and how much more difficult the way was going to
- become if sieges and city warfare ever became an issue, for if this
- complex was indicative of elven architecture in general, the Imperial Army
- would be serious difficulty.
- The smaller of the two buildings was a single-story building that had
- been converted into stables, with room for 1,000 horses, although it was
- rare that all ten Squads were ever at the Compound, so it was never used
- to capacity. When the 234th had taken the structures, it had just been one
- immense, empty hall. There was also an underground level that had likewise
- just been a sprawling underground room. Some of this had been converted
- into troops and servants quarters, while most had been turned into a
- dungeon that was referred to as "the stockade."
- One of DePinder's duties had been to manage the stockade, and Corbayne
- had taken most of that work upon him when he arrived so she could
- concentrate on planning the wareffort and meeting with the Squadleaders
- under her command, not to mention the rank and file of the army.
- In some respects, it was a good thing that she had left the stockade to
- him; with the exception of her punishments for rapists, DePinder was
- entirely too softhearted on lawbreakers. If there was any aspect about her
- that was as delicate as her appearance might suggest, then it was that.
- Corbayne, on the other hand, knew that meeting out punishments to fit the
- crimes was the cornerstone of maintaining order, and he had seen to it
- that the most duty-conscience and sadistic soldiers he encountered were
- reassigned to the stockades and to serve as Wardens.
- He descended the stairs and walked past the troop quarters and into the
- dungeon area. The air was hazy and ripe with smoke from torches down here;
- unlike the rest of the compound, which was lit by glowing, magical
- crystals, the stockades were merely lit by torches. The bellows he heard
- down the smoke-filled, roughly-hewn stone corridor told him that someone
- was doing well at their job:
- "How does it feel, ya plodder? How does it feel?! Do ya like having it
- shoved up your ass? Do ya?!"
- As Corbayne drew closer, he could hear someone laughing, and under that
- he could hear muffled sounds of pain. He stepped through the doorway to
- the interrogation chamber, and saw justice in action. One Warden hand one
- hand pressed against the back of the fallen Grand Captain's neck, holding
- his head pressed against the rough wooden table he was bent across, while
- using his other hand to hold his unbroken arm immobile. DePolarno had been
- stripped naked. Head Warden Lor, a mountain of a man, was behind
- DePolarno, naked from the waist down; he was fucking the officer up the
- ass, driving his fully-erect penis deeply into the officer with each
- stroke, and pulling it out with a small spurt of blood. Corbayne cocked an
- eyebrow, startled that a dick that large could even fit inside DePolarno.
- "As you were," Corbayne said, habitually, and then realized what a stupid
- thing that was to say."
- "My pleasure, Master, sir," Lor grunted, driving his thick shaft into
- DePolarno; he other man let out a whining groan as his feet literally
- lifted off the floor. "Jus' teaching this bastard what it feels like to
- have a dick shoved into small spaces--and our Lieutenant DePinder is _too
- small_ for a fucker like you to go around poking, ya son of an elf! How
- does it feel, fucker?!"
- "Please," DePolarno groaned, as Lor pulled free, only the thrust again.
- "Stop, stop."
- "In, out, in, out," the other soldier chanted, sending Corbayne a grin
- that revealed his two missing front teeth.
- Corbayne smirked. "As the ranking officer, it is my duty to advise you
- gentlemen that engaging in homosexual acts will cause all three of you to
- be condemned to the Beyond by Nelemi."
- Lor drove his penis in again, and gyrated his hips, throwing back his
- head and roaring with laughter. "Ya hear that, fucker?! You and me will be
- together in the Beyond! Your ass will be mine for all time!" He thrust
- against DePolarno so hard that the table moved. Then a shudder ran through
- his body, and he gave a few more quick thrusts. Each one prompted a moan
- from the Grand Captain, whose face had gone ashen and who's eyes had
- focused on Corbayne, pleading.
- "Please," he moaned. "Mercy."
- Lor pulled away from DePolarno's ass, his penis smeared with blood and
- sperm. When the soldier made to release him, Lor pointed at him. "I'm not
- done with this asshole yet. Hah! That was a joke, huh?" He laughed, his
- half-erect penis waving and sending droplets flying. Corbayne took a step
- back.
- "Indeed," the officer said.
- "What brings ya over, Master Corbayne?"
- "A Grand Captain was here earlier today. He brought news of our new
- Captain, and Lieutenant DePinder asked me to gather all the Squadleaders
- for an official announcement in the main conference room."
- "I'd love ta go, but I've got to make sure this fucker is properly
- regretful when we _really_ shove something up his ass tomorrow," the
- Warden replied as he went to another table across the room. "By the way,
- I've gotta do the execution orders on him. What's his name and division?"
- "I'm Grand Captain DePolarno," DePolarno said weakly, blood flowing
- freely down his inner thighs.
- "Shappad," the solder who was still at the table said, pressing harder on
- the prisoner's neck. "We warned against lying, didn't we? Ya want my dick
- up your ass, too?"
- "I'm not sure of his name, but he claimed to be the replacement cook from
- 34th Infantry. He followed Lieutenant DePinder to her bedroom and
- attempted to jump her."
- "Fucker!" Lor roared, scribbling furiously. Then he grabbed his beefy
- penis in one hand started squeezing it as his hand slid up and down its
- length, blood and semen dripping from its tip. It started to get hard
- again. "We're gonna have to carry to you the field tomorrow, but I'm gonna
- make your ass look like your mouth! Master, sir, may I be excused from the
- meeting?"
- "Carry on, Head Warden Lor," Corbayne said. Looking into DePolarno's
- painfilled eyes he said, trying to sound sincere, "May Nelemi be merciful
- in his punishment."
- He expected DePolarno to curse him, or attempt to spit, or something
- deserving of respect. Instead, the Grand Captain merely sighed and
- whispered, "Mercy."
- Corbayne turned from the room feeling disgusted. What kind of men were in
- charge of this army, anyway? DePolarno screamed, just as he'd reached the
- exit from the stockade, and Lor drowned out the scream with a roared
- series of expletives. Corbayne laughed.
-
- The council chamber feel silent when Corbayne walked in, and several of
- the assembled officers and junior commanders nodded at him with broad
- smiles from their seats around the T-shaped black table that dominated the
- room. A quick glance across room showed that only two of the five
- Lieutenants were there, Luitentant of the Observers Etak, the young woman
- in a mud-free uniform for once, and Lieutenant of the Lance Tergonan.
- Etak's expression was, as always, inscrutable, the triangular face
- expressionless as her blue eyes briefly passed over Corbayne before
- returning to gaze on the empty Captain's chair at the head of the table.
- There was, however, no doubt about Tergonan's present emotional state. As
- always, the half of this face that had been mutilated by elven Battle
- Magic back when he was a Squadleader was covered with a black leather
- mask, but the other half of his face was set in a sneer. His good eye
- locked on Corbayne, and followed the staff officer to his seat. Corbayne
- said, "Gentleman, lady... finally, the Grand Captains have seen fit
- appoint a new Captain of the 234th Lance. When this meeting's over, we'll
- reconvene at the tavern in town to celebrate. Drinks and food will be on
- me,"
- A happy murmer spread around the table, but the Lieutenants remained
- impassive. Returning Tergonan's gaze, Corbayne said, "I hope you'll be
- able to join us, Lieutenant."
- "I have a report to finish. If I get it done in a timely manner, you can
- rest assured that I will be there to toast our new commander." His voice
- was so icy that Corbayne half-expected to see iceflowers form on the
- lead-lined windowpanes overlooking the rainsoaked roof of the compound's
- other building. His tone was to obviously hostile that it silenced the
- murmur of the Squadleaders and even caused Etak to cock an eyebrow. And in
- that silence, all heard the clicking of bootheels on the stone floor
- accompanied by a steady jangling of spurs.
- "Good afternoon, everyone," DePinder said, as she entered the room. Since
- Corbayne had seen her last, she had actually bothered to put on a mud-free
- uniform jacket; her boots and pants, however, were still flaking mud as
- she crossed to the head of the table. Standing next to the chair reserved
- for the Captain of the Lance, she continued. "As most of you undoubtedly
- know, we were visited by a Grand Captain about an hour ago. He came with
- the official appointment of a new Captain of the 234th Lance, and, as we
- all hoped, they chose to promote someone from our own ranks. Further, they
- have seen fit to honor me with position." With those words she drew the
- parchment bearing the Imperial seal from its concealment under her belt,
- tossed it onto the table, and took her seat in the Captain's Chair.
- "Congratulations, sir!" One of the younger Squadleaders said, a
- fresh-faced man with wild, blonde curls whose name Corbayne couldn't
- remember.
- "Thank you, W'hitt," DePinder said. "Now, since I, along with Lieutenant
- Tergonan have more less been serving as joint commanders of the Lance
- since the death of Captain Lorfell, I expect that business will be
- conducted as usual. However, we will need to promote someone to fill the
- vacancy left by my promotion. I would like to see requests and
- recommendations by the end of the week, because I also want us to start a
- serious effort at breaking through the elven lines as soon as possible.
- This trench warfare we've been conducting is costing us entirely too much
- for entirely too little territory gained."
- "Permission to speak freely?" Tergonan said, as he examined the parchment
- that carried DePinder's orders of promotion.
- A genuinely surprised expression appeared on her face. "Of course,
- Lieutenant Torgonan. I though we all had an understanding that I want you
- to speak your minds at all time."
- Corbayne groaned inwardly. Could it really be that DePinder was the only
- officer in the Lance who didn't know how Torgonan felt about her and women
- in general?
- "No disrespect intended, sir, but I think you're entering a position that
- is not one for a lady."
- She titled her head, the look of surprise deepening. "You are correct,
- but I am not a lady, legally or otherwise."
- The mop-topped Squadleader tittered and there was a slight twitch at the
- corner of Etak's mouth.
- Tergonan looked up at DePinder. "I am aware of that, Captain, but that's
- merely a legal technicality. You _are_ a woman. It is a well-known fact
- that women have softer hearts and weaker resolves than men. You will be in
- a position where you're going to have be able to keep the welfare of the
- Lance foremost in your mind at all times, no matter how much political
- pressure and threats the Grand Captain's may level against you." With
- conviction in his voice, he concluded, "It's an unsuitable job for a
- woman, lady or no."
- Silence fell over the council chamber. Corbayne tried to catch DePinder's
- eye, hoping to send her a look that would tell her to cut Tergonan off at
- the knees before he took this disrespect any further. But, her eyes were
- firmly focused on Tergonan's face.
- "Lieutenant," she said mildly, "you're concern is noted, and should I
- ever feel my resolve weakening and my feminine nature pushing me to giving
- into ridiculous demands from the Golden City, I'll send Corbayne to get
- you so that you may hold my sword as I throw myself upon it."
- Corbayne covered a smile with his hand; that wasn't a very captainly
- comeback, he thought, but it did the trick.
- Tergonan straightened his back. "I would like to speak with Grand Captain
- DePolarno."
- "Apply for leave," DePinder replied, "or arrange with Corbayne to have
- you translocated there, because the Grand Captain didn't have time to
- waste and has already returned to the Imperial Palace."
- Gritting his teeth, Tergonan returned the parchment to the table and
- pushed it toward DePinder. "Very well, sir."
- "That's really all I gathered you here for," DePinder said, rising from
- her seat. "Why don't you all take the night off."
- "Sir," Corbayne said, standing as well. "The officers and I would like to
- toast you at the tavern in the village, if you don't mind, Would you honor
- us with your presence?"
- DePinder hesitated for a moment. "Well--"
- She cut herself off, an expression of mild amazement flashing briefly
- across her face; it was only there for a fraction of second, but Corbayne
- had known her long enough, and had studied her carefully enough, to
- recognize even the most subtle variations in her very expressive face.
- Then he felt the magic in the air. Much like DePinder's face, he had
- spent enough time studying the ebb and flow of magical to sense when they
- were being disrupted near him; the hair on the back of neck were standing
- on end. He turned to look at the rest of the officers. All eyes were
- turned toward DePinder, except Etak, who glanced hastily from the
- Squadleader next to her, then at Torgonan. Then she noticed Corbayne was
- looking at her, and dropped her gaze toward her hands on the table.
- Torgonan, who had leaned back in his chair and folded his arms across his
- chest noticed her movement, and glanced at her, then looked up at Corbayne
- with a slight shrug.
- "Well," DePinder said again, as Corbayne turned back to her. She bit her
- lower lip, then brought her hand to her mouth, a forced thoughtful
- expression on her face. It dissolved into a bright smile. "To the Beyond
- with the paperwork," she stated.
- "I shall give the first toast," W'hitt said brightly, as he stood and
- literally bounced from the room.
- "But I want everyone to be in civilian clothes! This will be the last
- time we'll have in a while, for I want us to start planning a major push
- day after tomorrow."
- "Yes sir," Torganon said, icily. He and the rest of the officers filed
- from the room, as DePinder stayed near the door. Corbayne could felt the
- magical disruption fade as quickly as it had appeared, but he noticed that
- DePinder looked a little flushed.
- "Are you all right?"
- Her eyes roamed over his body, and she reached out and touched his chest.
- She bit her lower lip again, and looked him in the eye. "I'm fine." Her
- hand lingered on his chest for another moment, and her green eyes remained
- focused on his... there was something in them, something he had seen in
- other women but never her. Then she turned and stalked from the room, her
- spurs ringing furiously. "I'll see you at the tavern."
- Corbayne frowned. He could have sworn that he'd seen lust in her eyes...
