- PROLOGUE: The events in this TNG-based story are NOT set in the TNG universe as
- it has been portrayed in the series. The following changes occurred in this
- alternate universe.
-
- 1. Lt. Tasha Yar was neither killed by Armus or sent back aboard the
- Enterprise-C. She remains in Starfleet (and aboard the Enterprise-D), but is no
- longer Chief of Security.
-
- 2. K'eyhlehr, Worf's mate, is very much alive, and is still in the Federation
- Diplomatic Corps. Alexander is alive as well, and is on Earth with Worf's
- foster parents.
-
- 3. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Beverly Crusher have married and left the
- Enterprise together. Both are still in Starfleet, as is Dr. Crusher's son
- Wesley, who is in his senior year at Starfleet Academy.
-
- 4. Lt. Cmdr. Geordi LaForge, longtime Chief Engineer, is now Assistant
- Professor of Warp Dynamics at Starfleet Academy, and married to Dr. Leah Brahms.
- Reginald "Broccoli" Barclay is now Chief Engineer.
-
- 5. Alyssa Ogawa, longtime Chief Nurse, is now a Lt. Commander, and Chief
- Medical Officer.

-
- Captain's Log: Stardate 44755.3: Enroute to the Romulan Neutral Zone,
- ship's sensors have detected an ion storm of unusual brilliance. Stellar
- Dynamics and Ship's Sciences have asked to check it out. Hearing no objection
- from Engineering, we have slowed our speed to Warp One to take sensor readings
- of the ion storm.
-
-
- Captain William Riker, Commanding Officer of the Starship Enterprise
- finished recording his entry into the log and thumbed the recorder off. He sat
- back and observed the people around him, trying not to make them any more
- nervous than they should be. At Ops, Lt. Cmdr. Tasha Yar was finishing a course
- that would enable Stellar Dynamics to get complete readings of the ion storm
- without putting the ship in danger. Lt. Cmdr. Worf, the relatively new Security
- Chief, was conducting torpedo loading drills with the Engineering staff. Lt.
- Cmdr. Reginald Barclay was on the Bridge maintaining a close watch on the shield
- surface readings. Cmdr. Data, the First Officer and Sciences Officer, was at
- the main Sciences station observing the readings from the ion storm now showing
- on the main viewer. Cmdr. Data bent over more, looking at the readouts as if
- unsure what he saw was real.
-
- "Captain," the android First Officer said. "Sensors are detecting a burst of
- a very unusual radiation type heading toward the ship. Sensors show it to be
- even slower than Alpha particles."
- Riker asked, "Mr. Barclay, are the ship's shields in place?"
- Barclay replied, "They're at full power, Captain."
- "Then we have nothing to worry about from that quarter. However," Riker
- finished, "to be safe, order ship's sensors to shut down until the radiation
- front has passed."
-
- All over the skin of the ship, the various sensor arrays were shut down and
- closed off from space - except one, a small lateral array near the back of the
- saucer section. It was shut down, but parts to fix the clamshell doors behind
- which the array could be closed were still at Starbase 144, which was the
- Enterprise's next destination. As the radiation burst struck the ship, it
- cascaded harmlessly off the hull of the ship in all areas, except THIS one,
- which was unprotected by shielding or the normal covering. What would happen
- because of this would become the talk of Starfleet, and the Federation, for
- centuries to come.
-
- The power surge in the unprotected array naturally looked for a ground source.
- In its search, it traveled along the sensor cables linking the lateral array to
- the Ship's Computer Center. From there, the low-grade surge "hitched a ride"
- along the shipwide bus to all areas of the starship. The first to notice
- anything odd was an Engineering crewperson in the Observation Lounge with his
- wife, also in the Engineering Department. As the two of them were kissing at
- the port by their table, he smelled lilacs. "Lilacs?" he thought. "No way. I
- must be REALLY overworked!" Then he went back to kissing his wife. For some
- reason, he wanted nothing more right now than to take her back to their quarters
- and fuck her brains out. He simply picked his wife up and carried her all the
- way back to their quarters without saying a word. The couple, still without
- speaking, began a marathon of lovemaking that would not end for several hours.
-
- Meanwhile, back on the Bridge, the ship waited for the radiation burst to pass
- by the ship, then resumed the scanning of the unusual ion storm. Soon, it was
- time for the second shift to come on duty. In a very surprising maneuver for
- starships OTHER than those named Enterprise, this shift would be commanded by
- the Chief Medical Officer, Alyssa Ogawa. The second shift smoothly relieved the
- first, and the various Command officers left the Bridge for various places.
-
- Cmdr. Data and Lt. Cmdr Tasha Yar walked together down the corridor to
- Ten-Forward. The two of them sat at the bar and Guinan, the hostess and Chief
- Bartender, placed the ingredients for an Earth Tequila Sunrise in front of the
- Enterprise's First Officer. "Why have you done so much for me, Data?" the
- blonde Ops officer asked. "Especially after my trying ot block out the events
- after we discovered the Tsiokovsky?" (see the TNG episode "The Naked Now" for
- the events in question - CLE)
- The First Officer mixed the two drinks with his, as usual, inhuman precision
- while talking to his colleague. "You came back later and apologized, Tasha," he
- said. "Besides, would a friend do less for a friend?"
- Tasha reached out and kissed Data on the cheek. "I'm glad you consider me your
- friend, Data," Tasha said. "I have known very few people in my life that I
- could consider friends. At least, you, an android, have taught me the value of
- friendship."
- Data finished fixing their drinks and gave one to Tasha and kept one himself.
- Tasha took a small sip of hers, and said, "As usual, Data, you are an excellent
- drinks-master. You could always resign from Starfleet and make a comfortable
- living as a barkeep."
- "Inquiry, Tasha - barkeep?" Data asked.
- Tasha thought a moment, then said, "A barkeep, or bartender, is a person who
- fixes drinks in an establishment more like Ten-Forward, except he, or she, is
- also the owner, and the establishment is on a planet or in a spaceport."
- Data searched his memory bamks, then something clicked. "Ah. In short, someone
- like Guinan." Tasha smiled. "You're right, Data; that does indeed describe
- Guinan." The two of them went back to their drinks. At times, Tasha thought she
- smelled lilacs in the room. Then, she happened to notice some real-looking
- lilac blossoms in some of the more exotic drinks some of Ten-Forward's habitues
- were drinking tonight. "Maybe Guinan's picked some from the Arboreteum," Tasha
- thought. Then, she took another look at Data. Unbidden, her mind took her back
- to the night she "invited him in" to her quarters. He was indeed a very gentle
- man. Strong, but he could also be very gentle when needed. Also, he could
- teach a lot of humans the value of frienship. In fact, he may be the most human
- of all of us. Then she deicded.
- "Data," Tasha asked, "could you come with me to my quarters for a while? I'd
- like to discuss something with you, and I don't think Ten-Forward is the place
- to discuss it."
- Data thought a moment, then simply said, "Very well." He handed their empty
- glasses back to Guinan, as well as giving her back the box in which she had
- placed the ingredients for their drinks.
-
- Tasha and Data stopped outside her quarters. Tasha opened the door, then called
- "Computer, half-lights." The illumination in her quarters was now set at half
- the normal intensity. Tasha led Data over to her bed and offered Data a spot on
- the right side of her bed. She sat down on the bed beside him.
- "Data, have you been thinking about the night that I had sex with you in my
- quarters?" Tasha asked.
- If he were human, Data would have been shocked at Tasha asking him that question
- just them. He had always assumed, even after Tasha had apologized for giving
- him that 'It never happened' speech, she wouldn't have brought upthat subject; he
- assumed that her thoughts of being out of control were painful for her to
- recall, and he still did not wish to cause her any pain. However, he had VERY
- much been thinking about his sexual encounter with the slim but attractive
- Lieutenant Commander. The thoughts that entered his mind could have been called
- love by any human male who has ever philosophized on the subject of love;
- however, Data, being an android, could only take things literally, and knew
- nothing of the vagarities of human love - or so he thought.
- "Tasha," Data said,"I must be honest. I have been, and am now, thinking about
- our 'encounter' in these quarters." Tasha blushed, and smiled briefly, then
- surprised Data by saying, "As have I. I have taken a look at why I did what I
- did with you. I have come to the conclusion that, yes I am sexually attracted
- to an android, Data - but that android HAS to be you. No other being has made
- me feel the way you have, and not just that one time in bed."
- Tasha took a deep breath, then plunged on. "Data, I'm in love with you. And I
- wish to make love with you. Right here, on this bed."
- Data was so surprised that he took a scan of Tasha, using his built-in sensors
- and compared those readings to those he knew were normal from her medical
- records. Except for the faster heart rate, her readings were completely normal.
- What's more, there was no trace of anything like the viral disinhibitor that
- they discovered aboard the Tsiokovsky. So, he had to come to the conclusion
- that his friend was very much in her right mind as a human could be in.
- Data examined his own feelings for Tasha. Could he, in all honesty, tell her
- that he felt the same way? The answer sped its way on positronic feet: YES!
- Data turned to his human friend, soon to be, hopefully, once again, his human
- lover. He said, "I must tell you, Tasha: as much as I understand human love, I
- feel the same way about you, and I also wish to make love with you again, here
- on this bed." Without further words, Tasha reached out, pulled Data's head to
- hers, and kissed him firmly on the lips. After several seconds, the kiss broke.
- "Ohh, my darling, darling, dear Data! I am glad to hear you say that!" Tasha
- gasped. She grabbed him and started kissing him again, this time thrusting her
- tongue deep in his mouth. All Data could do was to copy her movements, caught
- up in a bevy of sensations that were either totally new or long-disused to his
- neural pathways. Tasha kept the kiss going and slowly pressed Data's willing
- body back onto the bed.
