- To this day, there is a Longue Point army base in Montreal. The =
- similarity
- to Far Point where this story began germinating, but I have changed t=
- he base's
- name and location. Many of the other historical details=D1the origina=
- l Montreal
- General Hospital, the urban development of Montreal l900, the Pine Av=
- enue
- hotels=D1are as accurate as possible given constraints on my time. Mo=
- ntreal sent
- its first troops to the Transvaal on October 30, l899 and continued p=
- ouring
- troops into Africa, inclucing the famous Strathcona Horse 500, until =
- the noose
- was jerked tight around Croje in l902. Mind, the Dr Penfield here bea=
- rs no
- resembelance to the historical one, it was a place-keeper name that s=
- tuck. I
- should credit Montreal under British Rule from l535 to l9l4 by W.H. A=
- therton,
- Montreal Then and Now by Bryan Demchinsky and the l90l J. Lovell & So=
- n's
- Lovell's Map of Montreal and Suburbs with Complete Street Index and P=
- laces of
- Interest. My most important debt is for a deliberate steal from a Can=
- adian
- writer one of whose short stories was the basis for Jean-Luc's discov=
- ery of
- Hannah's secret. I think I heard it discussed on Morningside when I d=
- ozed
- through during a book review.
-
- Above all else, Snoozin' Suzan proof-read the ms. despite having=
- a life of
- her own, catching any number of errors [Who's making the female sound=
- s-Deanna?],
- cleaning up logic [How about "silently agreed to indulge in the ficti=
- on, cuz the
- activities about to commence are not exactly silent] and, of course, =
- explaining
- Garbo.
-
- Secondly, this will be be my last contribution to net culture. I=
- will soon
- be moving to chase work. My original stories, the six Liaisons, were =
- up-loaded
- using one address that is no longer valid as this one will soon be. I=
- ask that
- archivists keep my stories intact and this note attached to Damage. M=
- oreover,
- that no money be charged for their transmission or recovery in any fo=
- rm. If it
- seems impossible not to earn some spondules from these stories, pleas=
- e give the
- profits to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society, Donations, 5l5l Boulev=
- arde de
- L'Assomption, Montreal, Quebec, H1T 4A9, Canada.
-
- Lastly, if you'll forgive the vanity, the problem with fan ficti=
- on, no,
- that's not fair, a problem with much of the fan fiction is that most =
- of it makes
- no difference. Once the story concludes neither the reader nor the ch=
- aracters
- has been changed in any way. The characters do stuff and the story en=
- ds. There
- is nothing different in the universe, in the characters or in the rea=
- ders but
- that everything and everyone is a few minutes older. but, rather you =
- should
- have something you want to say, rather than have the characters go th=
- rough lots
- of motions and do lotsa stuff. Begin with an understanding, and show =
- a way of
- reaching it.
-
- As E. M. Forrester put it: The queen died and then the king died=
- isn't a
- plot. The queen died and then the king died of grief is a plot.
-
- The same applies to sex. The man had an orgasm and then the woma=
- n had an=20
- orgasm is about as interesting as the man's clock rug and then the wo=
- man's clock
- rung.
-
- One letter a user was kind enough to send me said she generally =
- could tell
- the sex of a story's writer with a few paragraphs because male storie=
- s often=20
- have a 'harder/faster/deeper/more obsession' and many women-written s=
- tories are
- obsessesed with the characters 'making emotional contact'. The former=
- are dull=20
- descriptions of actions that don't mean anything, the latter seem ste=
- ps away=20
- =66rom dull political plays meant to enlighten the minds of the audie=
- nce. By that
- I mean rather like the late Victorians who wanted athletics to serve =
- religious=20
- and social puropses, they seem to miss the pleasure of playing for pl=
- ay's sake.
-
- I've tried to aim for a balance between the two. Pornography, fr=
- om the Old
- Greek means harlot's writing=D1pornos & graphos=D1an aid to masturbat=
- ion, which to
- the Johns, prostitutes are. However, neither did I sit down with the=
- =20
- condescending arrogance to improve. In Liaisons I attempted to isolat=
- e moments
- of divine madness, little lunacies where no-one talked because if the=
- y did=20
- they'd have to lie to each other. In Damage, a cheery title, I wanted=
- to...
-
- Well, what I did or didn't do is a matter for the reader to deci=
