  5.  What version of LhA are you using? There have been numerous updates, but
  6. unfortunately most of them were fakes. In fact, if you are using anything
  7. above V1.53 it's probably a fake. Releases 1.62, 1.70 and 1.74 are fake.

  9.  For some reason, groups keep releasing the 1.38 Evaluation version as new
  10. "Registered Updates". It amazes me how many groups have tried to do this,
  11. and are STILL doing this. A European group called FLUM has just released
  12. "V1.74", which is just 1.38 fucked around with by a Hex Editor. It also
  13. amazes me how many people are actually using these fake LhA's. I strongly
  14. suggest that you check the version you are using..

  16.  First thing to check is the filesize. For some reason, these groups keep
  17. releasing 1.38. The filesize to look out for is 53592. All versions past
  18. 1.38 are larger anyway..

  20.  Secondly, simply run LhA with no arguments. ALL the fake versions I have
  21. seen still have the message saying "Evaluation copy" with information on
  22. how get a full registered version near the bottom of the text.

  24.  Thirdly, unless it is a "keyless crack" it should search for a keyfile. So
  25. just turn on SnoopDos, run your version with no arguments and check if it
  26. is looking for one.

  28.  Finally, use your version to crunch a file. I have crunched the 780K demo
  29. "Zoombi" by Union. If you haven't got it in order to compare results, you can
  30. get it from the UK's largest scene bbs (by far), Digital Candy (that's 0191
  31. 2325527 for you slow-coaches:) All tests were done on a bog-standard A12OO.

  33.  My REAL 1.50r LhA has the following results..

  35.   781156 => 743749 (4.7%) in 1 minute 4 secs.

  37.  The 1.38 Eval release has the following results..

  39.   781156 => 743749 (4.7%) in 2 minutes 5 secs!
  40.  
  41.   ..and so do all the of "update" versions of LhA I mentioned earlier. Over
  42. a MINUTE behind the REAL version!
