-
- I've read the file from Delta and I have to disagree, being in a crack
- group you may think my opinion biased but I have my reasons.
-
- "It's not because the Amiga is not powerful enough" [that killed it]
-
- -- Wrong, there are in fact two reasons for the death of the Amiga:
-
- 1) Commodore. Commodore fucked the Amiga badly, they never got developers
- interested, they charged them for developing on the Amiga and they didn't
- allow the construction of better machines and wasted time with projects
- like the A600. The only ever good release was the A500 -- why do you think
- that people who are developing the UAE (Un*x Amiga Emulator, which is also
- available for the Mac & PC) that runs A500 demos and games? [Kick3 does
- work, but AGA emulation is not available]
-
- 2) Doom. Doom was the nail in the proverbial coffin, there was no way at
- the end of '93 that the Amiga could do 3D games like this and this made
- people move to the PC, and the ironic thing was -- it is possible to do it
- on the Amiga but you need an '030 minimum + Fastram, hmm what were you
- saying 'It isn't the spec that killed the Amiga'?
-
- Don't believe me? Check out the Mac market, which even now has a similar
- sized games market (maybe smaller) but still gets conversions of The Dig,
- Doom1/2, Dark Forces because its got a high spec.
-
- When the A600 came out, we should of had HD's and 256 cols standard so the
- PC ports would have kept coming thru '93-94, if the Amiga had an better
- spec earlier on, TFX, Frontier 1st Encounter, etc would be out now and
- people would be making more stuff/buying games. Also, the CD32 needed fast
- ram and an '030 maybe, this way we would have had people considering ports
- because its technically possible.
-
- The Amiga was enevitably dogged by a stigma known as Commodore, and the
- fact the ESCOM spent peanuts on AT didn't help it's relaunch case, from now
- on the Amiga will be a enthusiasts-only market, I was talking to Mr. Iggy
- Pop about this, he said that ST Format still sells about 15,000 copies and
- thats been dead for about 3-4 years. Note that the Falcon has an 030, More
- ram, a DSP and a HD (not all as standard) which does help.
-
- So, about Piracy -- yes it is killing the Amiga now but if you compare the
- Amiga market to any other market you'll realise that the Mac and PC markets
- are being plundered like hell. I'm not condoning piracy and I DO buy games
- but even if everyone could afford to buy all the games they want, it
- wouldn't make the Amiga market come back - its gone without a big
- multi-national company to market it and get developers interested. PIOS
- and Phase 5 have my respect but they'll not do a great deal and the fact
- that the Amiga didn't sell AT's estimate of 60,000 and managed only 9,000
- doesn't really inspire me with much hope!
-
- "The Amiga is dying a slow, painful death. Take a look around you; about
- one game a month is being released"
-
- NO! Thats not right, how come HF have released 4 games in the last week eh?
- And there will be more coming soon. Other groups have also been releasing
- stuffs too so I think that comment is a bit urn-like.
-
- "(if that - the last issue of One for Amiga did not even have ONE game
- review)"
-
- The One for Amiga is a dead magazine with no funding and they couldn't
- afford to review any games, if you had said the same for AF or CU Amiga
- then it would be different but even they don't get every game - only the
- Amiga warez scene gets all games (almost) you'd know that if you were in
- it.
-
- "Stopping Piracy until the Amiga market is flourishing again, and BUYING
- the games you REALLY want WILL make a difference. Apart we are nothing BUT
- TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Just everyone out there stopping
- downloading Wares and Buying the few games that they Want WILL Really make
- a BIG difference! I absolutely Guarantee it."
-
- What a load of crap, stop until it flourishes? And then what? "Oh, now
- that the Amiga's back I think I'll go copy 10 games, dum-de-dum-de-dum"
- Think not, m8. You will make a difference buying the games you REALLY want
- but you won't make the Amiga market flourish again, and I'm sure of that.
- But I do agree - buy the originals for the developers' sake.
-
- "- BOYCOTT AMIGA WARES -"
-
- Spelt with a Z you know it makes sense! This is like pleading with the
- population of the planet for world peace - it just won't happen!
-
- I'm probably gonna buy some more games soon but they may be for the PC - I
- want to play Civ2 and C&C but the Amiga version isn't coming out, and the
- sad thing is they can easily be converted to the Amiga both are isometric
- which can easily be accomplished on an accelerated Amiga so it looks like
- I'll need to get a PC. I also started development on a Dune II clone last
- year in August which would rule if I could be arsed to finish basicing
- it... maybe you'll all get a pirated copy one day :)
-
- Note to people who slate basic programmers: You go and write me a good
- game in assembler and I'll shut up.
-
- Note to people who slate crap basic programmers: Keep it up! :)
