Hope you don't mind. Btw, please take these matters into the consideration: - I will not follow this debate after this writing, because it only takes much of my valuable times and it's pointless - I will not argu about the matter after this writing - You are free to belive me or not. The choise is yours but trust me, I am not lying I have used computers in years. Befor I bought my first Amiga (several years ago), I used pezes and macs at work. At that time, I belived that those computer were awesome. Then I bought my first Amiga. Ok, I was sold. Mulitasking, sound, graphicacceleration build into the system, long filenames, 2 user interfaces etc wow, that was something. After that, I bought newer pezes and Amigas as the newer machines became available. I have had, for the most, access to the vast range of BBS for both Amiga and peze (what you call unlimited access). I have bought a lot of softwares and I have downloaded a lot. I have even used many of the expensive softwares at work (for both platforms). So belive me in these words, I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THESE MACHINES CAN DO. Things to consider here are these: - I have used the most expensive systems (read about my current configurations later). - I have seen/used all those nice softwares and games for both systems. - I have programmed both systems so I know a lot about them. Programmers knows the computers best of everyone else - I could get deeply techniqual here and compare both systems hardware in every detail but I will try to avoid this. I want to make this letter as simple as possible so everyone can understand it. Befor I go on. I give you a hint: AMIGA RULES! NOTHING COMES EVEN CLOSE TO IT'S POWER/PERFORMANCE. My current setup: - A3000T, 68030/25 MHZ, 18 MB MEM/ 500 MB SCSI HD/ MFIII/ Picasso II/ EMPLANT, C= 1950 Monitor, a WACOM drawing tablets - A4000T <- The killer ;) 68040/40 MHZ, FaseLane Z3 SCSI II/ 18 MB/ 1 GB SCSI II HD, MFIII, Studio 16 v3.0 + AD516 16 bits soundcard (SunRize), Retina Z-3 (4 MB), MAG MX17S monitor etc ^^^^^^^^^^ Waiting for a killer 68060/66 MHZ! Now beat that one ^^^^ - A 486/66 MHZ peze (Compaq), 16 MB, SCSI II, 1 GB HD, CD-ROM NEC 4XPro (600 KB Sec!), MAG MX17S monitor, SounBlaster Pro 16 Bits, etc All the 3 systems are connected using ethernet hardware/software to each other. I have an old Amiga 500, 230 MB HD/ 4 MB HD, C= 1084 monitor for the older stuff too :-) As I mentioned above, I have tried the most softwares available for both systems and as you can see, my hardwares leave nothing to wish ;-) On the peze I use windowz due to the lack of a better alternative. Well they say that the windowz is standard and they say that all the most awesome softwares come for the windowz so I use it too. (it sucks). They say there are a lot of awesome softwares for the peze. Gee, I now laugh to the death. Peze softwares sucks! I can't get most of them to work on my system as I wish. There is always something wrong. Lack of memory (see I have only 16 MB ;) etc. Most of the softwares are to slow, you simply can't get the damn work done without waiting and waiting for the crapy system to read/write to/from your HD! That's what I do for the most when I work with the peze. I wait and wait and wait! For the most, when I install a new software, my windowz get messed up and I can't run the older softwares. Housekeeping the peze is a nightmare. There are so many crapy small files with every piece of crap you install that uninstalling is almost impossible! Gee they even have professional? uninstall softwares that of course don't work! They write about MS Word in evey magazin. Gee, I have an original copy of this shit and I hate it more than anything else. It must be the most slow softwatre I have ever seen! I do most of my writing on the Amiga (japp, power) on my CED and then I import the text to the PageStream or AmgiaTeX and print it out from those program. They talk about awesome terminal programs! WOWWWW! Terminalprograms? Pezs terminal programs replace almost the operating system! These are huge! WOW! then they must be awesome, NOT!, they are huge because they must have everything you need. The computer simply can't multitask so they must have CED and DirectoryOpus etc etc inbuild. That's why they are so huge. And then we have the old good? Norton! Hahaha, that's their directory utility. In my opinion a program you use most on your system. Sure, use it and compare it to DirWork or directoryOpus or whatever DirUtil you want on the Amiga. See for yourself, it's like comparing a Renault 4 and and a Porsche. Let me tell you a story about virtual memory and the peze. I unfortunately had to run Windowz in order to run Corel Draw on my PC. One day, for some reason, Windowz decided to use my C: drive for its swap files. This drive, due to various reasons (on that time), was only 1.2 Meg in size. EVERYTHING I ran, including Windowz, was on the D: partition. Windowz ran out of VM halfway through. So I immediately began trying to free some up by closing windowz, etc. the same as I would do on an Amiga. Too bad, Windowz said. It still, even after I freed up an extra 300K of space, said I was out of memory and refused to save my drawing. Too bad. I had to quit and lose about an hour of work. One thins I have heard last is that the Amigas are not ompatibile with other platforms when it comes to character setting! Pure bullshit! The standard Amiga character set is an exact copy of ISO 8859/1 (`Latin Alphabet 1'). Don't blame the Amiga for incompatibility with other platforms, blame the other platforms for incompatibility with the international standard! On my costy powerful? peze I have these problems and a hell lot more: - I still can't format a disk with file manager and run anything else. - I get and "out of resources" error when running Excel and I've got 16Megs. - I get and "out of resources" error when running Word and I've got 16Megs. - When I run in 24-bit 640x480 mode the mouse flickers and kinda drags along. - I still can't get any better sound than beeps and boops. Gee, I once payed a lot for my SoundBlaster Pro 16 Bits and it's stil sounds crapy - I still witness StRaNgE shut downs in Windowz. - I still can't play any REAL neat games from Windowz. - I still can't play any REAL neat games without renaming my config.sys and autoexec.bat - I am still wondering where and what stealth memory is REALLY. On the Amiga I manily use, Cygnus Editor, Directory Opus, FinalWriter, ADPro, ImageMaster, TypeSmitt TVPaint, Baby!, Proper Grammar II, PageStream, SAS C, SuperBase, ProCalc, Brilliance II, DFA, Term, On The Ball, PhonePak (on the A4000T + hardware), Scala MM300, Giga Mem Bars&Pipes Pro (+ a lot of TOOL Disks), Imagine, Blitz Basic II, Morph Plus, TrapFAX, MediaPoint 3, LighWave 3.0, Invoice It!, Batch Factory, AmiBack, AmiBack Tools, Scenery Animator 4.0, DynaCad 3D, Anim Workshop 2.0, A-Skatt, AmigaBok 2.1, Rötter, Diavolo backup, Upper disk tools, HELM authoring system Pro, DevPac 3.0 DynamicCache, ImageFX, ProVector, Real3D and a set of smaller softwares like MUI, PowerSnap, MagicWB, MFR, GBlanker, DCron, MagicMenu, ReOrg, DiskSalv, XFH, Yak, ToolManager etc. They are all reliable and they are FASTTT and I love em (and yes, they are affordable). About the games, ok I am not a gamer but I have SEEN almost all games for the peze and most of them for the Amiga. There is a huge missunderstanding here. Peze games SUCKS big time! They are like peze application softwares. They are slow! The sound sucks! Graphic is mainly 256 colors but it is still crapy! Can't explain why! And then they have these HUGE CD-ROM based games! Make me laugh to the death! Crapy games that make you wait and wait for that animation to load etc etc. I don't call them playable games. I call them poor demonstrations of poor/stone age system/concept. And then we have the hardwares! Gee, I can this one better than everyone else because I have installed a lot of hardwares into both Amiga and PC. On the Amiga we have had AutiConfig in YEARS! You put your hardware in the box and (maybe) copy a driver to a dir inside the system and it's done! On the crapy Peze, it's a nightmare. you install the hardware/ software and it doesn't work because there is hardware/software conflict in the system. I have seen it so many times. I almost piss on myself each time I need to install a new hardware/software into the peze. The peze developers have lies to the people in many years. Lets take a look at the crapy soundcards for the peze. They write about these awesome? 16 bit card (I have one myself) but What really matters here is the quality of the 16 bit DACs. This is another problem that's overseen by most of the clone soundcard manufacturers: they make soundcards with 16 bit DACs and all kinds of "neat" features, but neglect to shield the cards, so the quality often ends up being lousy anyway. The much praised Gravis Ultrasound card only has 4 16bit channels and a DSP to mix 8 voices into one channel to get 32 voices. An Amiga with DSP will be able to do 64 voices this way, provided the DSP can keep up. Sounds like enough to me. Now belive me in these words, I think that the sound quality of my old Amiga 500 is much better than the one from my SoundBlaster Pro 16 Bits! Can't explain why. Try it yourself. And then we have PowerMacs. Another lousy history! You should not buy PPC-macs they can only run one (1) native OS (7.5) and they will never run anything else since the ROM's are surface mounted. Sure, you can get a new PowerMac later and that's exactly what Apple wants! Rip you on your money! Sheeh! I once installed (for a customer) a peze-16 bit-sound card, Pro Audio Spectrum 16 which also emulates AdLib and Sound Blaster cards. And you won't believe what kind of trouble that card gaves me. First you got to get the right IRQ. First I had it at IRQ 5. It didn't work 100%. Changed it to IRQ 7. Uuups, a Very Important Program used it. Had to change it to IRQ 3. Uuups, the mouse used it. Back to IRQ 5. For every game I must set separately the sound-card setting, which card there is, which IRQ, which I/O-address, which DMA channel. I must load a driver for the card to play any sounds at all. Lot of games and programs don't use PAS itself, so I must emulate the 8-bit sounds. The Sound Blaster emulation doesn't even work for 50 % of games. When programs say something, machine either freezes or slows down, as processor must do the work. Lacking of the autoconfig force you to get a number of expansion of cards to work together and this is a nightmare of IRQ and Port settings; conflicts can cause VERY weird things to happen. Figuring the best way to set port addresses is not for the faint of heart, and if you move something (such as a sound card) from its default address, many programs won't find it. Companies cheapen hardware to remain price-competitive. The joystick port on many local-bus IDE multifunction card doesn't support a second stick (necessary for throttle and rudder control); it also can't be disabled. If they can't resolve this, the system has to go back. Over a stupid joystick port. Also, many companies that advertise great deals on local-bus systems include really cheesy video cards with them; even the ones with good video cards only populate them with 512K of RAM, meaning you have to expand the RAM to get more than 256 colors in high resolutions. Even before you expand it, your machine is a morass of parts from a number of different companies. You're dependent on one company for support for your video card, another for your drive controller, another for the IDE drive of the week. You can buy something like a Zeos with integrated components, but there's no guarantee that Zeos is gonna be around next year. Even with the fastest local-bus video cards around, PC video speed is a joke. Those who claim that PCs update the screen faster can only substantiate that with simple window movements. Just watch Video for Windowz and you'll realize why Microsoft at least had the decency not to give it a name with the work "Quick" in it. You can't get the expert help online that you can with the Amiga, since chances are that the 5% of the online populace who happen to be whiz- gurus have a vastly different hardware configuration than you do. There ARE advantages to integrated systems. Try to get a sound board, scanner, cd-rom, network, etc going without resorting to a lot of anguish on the peze. haha, have fun :-) With the incredible variety of hardware/software configurations out there, there are an incredible variety of potential incompatibilities. And somwthing about the Intel ?86 Serie CPU, take a look at a 68040 (25 MHZ) and a 486 (50MHZ), not only the 68040 does more mips (20% apr.) but it has 17 32-bits registers, where the 486 only has a few registers, and not all of them are 32-bits either. To add to this, the Intel command set does not allow registers to be used generically, where the Motorola does. All this leads to much more external memory accesses and register swapping, which slows the CPU down. Now I give you one advise. Keep your Amiga and be happy. You are the owner of the most advanced computer system. You have fast/reliable hardware and you have dream softwares that are powerful, fast and easy to use and they are CHEAP. And you have the wonderful AmigaOS. Nothing comes even close to it's power/performnce. A word about this crapy PCI! They have made it again. PCI doesn't work. I had read about it in UseNet. Several developers I have talked to tell me about the wrong design from the ground. PCI gonna be a big misstake like anything else in the crapy peze platform. Read what Computer Sweden 2 Sep 94 writes about PCI: Varning for nya PC-Standarden, Stora problem med PCI-bussen Expansionskort som inte fungerar, hårddiskar som kraschar, grafikkort i snigelfart; nu kommer rapporterna om problem med den nya interbussen PCI. Hahahahaa, plug and play for the peze! Gee, it's like everything else. I have read/seen same things about windowz 4. It will be a crappy shit like windowz 3.11. We have original Chicago ß from MicroSoft (we are MicroSoft developers ourselves). The ground is crappy. It works when you don't multitask but as fast as you try to load several softwares, the perfomance get lower and lower and the whole system become unuseable and at the end it crashes and dies. MicroSoft itself says that to keep the Chicago compatible with the older windowz, they can't do anything but advise the user to not multitask. If you follow the debate in usenet you can see that the experts say themselves that windowz is a worng concept. They say that peze need a new OS from the gound. But what OS? There are almost so many windowz sold. Sorry peze users, you have to live with these crapy hardwares and your windowz! I also have it on good authority that one day all machines will run as beautifully as the Amiga did in 1987! But it will take years! Meanwhile, the Amiga users take advantage of the multitasking power of the Amiga and it's autoconfig concept. Get a life. Get yourself an Amiga. A decent one! You can't go wrong. Don't put your money in the peze trashcan. Get yourself and Amiga and taste the power TODAY! But it all comes down to the fact that clones have become so popular, that nothing else is considered very seriously. People buy them without a second thought. Then they bitch and moan about not being able to use it. Far too many times have I volunteered to help somebody that just bought a peze learn to use it. I should have said "Did you ask me BEFORE you bought it? No? Then why are you asking me now?" And let them lie in their own bed. The peze owners are constantly bitching about how hard it is to make things work. I know one that is a hacker-type too. He has four different config.sys files that he has to use to make various programs and games work, thanks to the ever-present 640K barrier. And no matter what front-end you use (Windoze, Norton Desktop, etc), you'll STILL have to use that damn DOS prompt at one point or another. On the Amiga, the CLI is an OPTION, not REQUIRED. If you really want a peze, buy a peze. I'm not going to try to stop you. It's just that I refuse to recommend inferior technology (be it software or hardware). I refuse to help make Microsoft any richer. Intel chips SUCK and that's all there is to it. The design stinks. Talk to any programmer that has written for a Motorola chip and they'll tell you how bass-ackwards Intel chip design is. On the PC you encounter planned obsolesence every few years, new software outdates the hardware, new hardware outdates the software. What a vicious circle you guys travel in ;-) To the peze users, keep throwing money at faster hardware for each release of your OS and applications that continue to get more bloated and prone to sloth. I'll take the Amiga instead. I once switched from an IBM to the Amiga. I have never regreted! Now to end this up, here are some nice things you can read about the different Operating systems of today :-) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Did you ever wonder what driving to the store would be like if operating systems ran your car? MS-DOS: You get in the car and try to remember where you put your keys. WINDOWS: You get in the car and drive to the store very slowly because attached to the back of your car is a freight train. OS/2: After fueling up with 6000 gallons of gas, you get in the car and drive to the store with a motorcycle escort and a marching band in procession. Halfway there, the car blows up, killing everybody in town. UNIX: You get in the car and type GREP STORE. After reaching speeds of 200 mph en route, you arrive at the barber shop. Windows NT: You get in the car and write a letter that says, "go to the store". Then you get out of the car and mail the letter to your dashboard. MacIntosh System 7: You get in the car to go to the store and the car drives you to church.
